Last weekend CTC participated in The Malnad Ultra - one of India's more challenging Ultra trail races organized in the estates of Cafe Coffee Day nearby the Badhra Wildlife Sanctuary in Karnataka. With 18 finishers across 50, 80 and 100K categories, CTC brought the largest contingent of ultra runners to the race among any running group in India. Many of them started running only in the last 1 to 3 years but scaled up quickly through regular participation in CTC's monthly practice hill runs getting body and mind tuned to trail and hill running. If you are also interested to join CTC's Team Ultra then get started now:

Step 2. CTC's 10x10 series - no better way to tune your body to running then regular daily runs. Check our daily updates on FB to catch us in Chennai's most scenic running routes.

Step 3. CTC's monthly hill running series - coming up next Kolli Hills on Oct 22-23

Running changes life for good,

Heights and Nights
by Vino
To be found, one must be first lost,
We’ll get to the campsite whatever be the cost.
Strength of the wolf is the strength of the pack,
Even desperation gives the strength you lack.
Hearken to them, the beat,
Of your heart, louder than the thunder that promises escape from heat.
Let them scream, let them curse
You will have days for your body to nurse.
The ecstasy that gives the view
The few who’ve reached there alone knew.
Worn out soles or broken toes
Forward our step always goes.
Envy them, the leaves that wither and fall
from the mountains so very tall
For, only they have unheard tales for us all.
Knees may tremble out of fear
While sliding a slope the end of which you don’t see anywhere near.

Thank your feet, for, despite the pain, they bear you through every slope that rise
Though it is the eyes which always enjoy the views wondrous and nice,
What can one do but freeze,
When at the top one hears the music of the gentle breeze.
Heights and nights will always fail
To stop us wildly shaking our tail
We are still the untamed ape
Though the tails miss our present shape.
How we’d like to spend a day
Jumping and hopping all the way.
Wiping the sweat and blood off the punctured skin

We get ready for the adventures to this akin.

Associated Cause

During the 2015 December Floods Chennai Trekking Club was actively engaged in rehabilitation of flood impacted backward hamlets near Pulicat. After initial relief efforts involving repairing damaged huts and restoring lost livelihood, CTC started a long term rehab program to improve education, sanitation, etc in many poor villages. In August 2016 CTC finished the construction of a school cum tuition center catering to more then hundred children from 15 nearby villages to provide quality education. We are employing three teachers for the students. In a second phase we are now planning to build toilets to improve sanitation as well as various other initiatives towards development of these backwards hamlets.

Fitness test results Oct 19, 2016

Dear all,

Around 50 members (dedicated souls) self-assessed their fitness level today morning by joining our fitness checkup climbing up a 142m high hill along a rocky slope with a 10kg (7kg ladies) backpack:
Another wonderful morning spent in breezy climate, beautiful city views and like minded souls!
Are you a member of CTC but not yet participated in any trek? Highly time for you to join the next fitness test and know where you stand in terms of readiness to get into the outdoors. Stay tuned for the next one coming soon. Even if you don't make it within the given time limit you can start working out and get ready soon!

Timings to reach the peak generally vary between 5 minutes to 15+ minutes depending on the fitness level of participants:
  • 10 min and below - fit to participate in CTC moderate treks
  • 11-15 min - need to become more active to improve fitness (read: health)
  • 16+ min - out of shape! Urgent action required to get out of unhealthy shape
Members taking 11+ minutes to scale the peak should engage in regular physical activity (e.g. trice a week, 30-60min each) - any sport will do:
  • Trekking - join for any of our ongoing easy weekday morning treks
  • Swimming - join our twice a week open water swimming camp
  • Cycling - cycle near your neighborhood or join our frequent cycle rides. Cycles can be rented in many stores in the city
  • Running - go for a solo run near your house or join one of the many running groups across the city
  • Others - any regular sport activity will get you quickly in shape: play badminton, volleyball, soccer, etc.
We have all become stagnant in our modern day lifestyles (sitting at office, commute, home) disconnected from the active lifestyle of our forefathers. Unless you engage in a regular physical activity to offset our stagnant lifestyle your health will quickly dwindle down. A regular sports routine will make you feel more active & alive, sleep better, eat healthier, you ll make better use of early mornings, ... simply said - it ll change your life!

So what are you still waiting for to step out?
Regards

Nochikuppam Zero waste model expanding; Join hands!!

Dear all,
As you know as a CTCian and green warrior, bad solid waste mgmt is causing various issues for sanitation, disease, environment, human(rag pickers), harm to animals. Please take time to look at this video we made highlighting each issue.

Hence CTC has been involved in making a model zero waste community at Nochikuppam slum clearance board tenements near Marina beach Light house last many months. The team here is working 4 to 5 sessions every week and needs lots of support to speed up the war against waste in Nochikuppam and in Chennai. Please register using the below form to volunteer during weekday morning/evening and weekend as per your availability.

We have successfully stabilised the door collection and segregation at the 160 homes A block overcoming the various challenges of workers, infrastructure, sanitation, thin plastics disposal and segregation with active support of the 24 member resident ladies committee that we helped form. Now we are also educating kids, mulling self employment for the ladies in the eco friendly products space - volunteering scope has really enlarged due to the interest of CTCians getting involved.

Now we are in the all important expansion phase to cover all the 800 homes in the community to make it fully zero waste and garbage bin free. Once done we would have reduced nearly half a ton waste daily from landfills and saved Rs.25k per month for Chennai Corporation in transportation alone. Environment impact is much higher.

The below chart highlights the enormity of the solid waste challenge. Though our initial struggle may be difficult, once it catches up it will for sure spread like wild fire. Segregating is so good and so easy and solves so much.

Our financial commitment to Nochikuppam is minimal compared to our time, knowledge and passion. We contribute only for buying trolley and initial funding of workers salaries. Almost the whole cost of 2bin1bag segregation kits per home is borne whole heartedly by the low income residents paying Rs.100 each.

Our work is greatly recognised by the Corporation higher officials and supported by Ramky too with a tricycle for our own use. Corporation is revamping and greatly increasing the capacity of the Mylapore burial ground compost yard that we started using. Biogas plant is also on the anvil, we hear.

Here I have listed the various regular tasks that we need help with and the coordinators. Please choose based on your interest and availability.

Kids awareness program on plastic segregation

Little by little, a little becomes a Lot”, an old Proverb says.
[write-up by Madhini B]
This is one of the tiny steps that was taken as part of the Project Green initiative at our Mapleton community

Awareness session for kids and adults on Source Segregation and Plastic pollution
The kid’s awareness program that was conducted on October 15 2016 at Mapleton was a success event. In the sense, it had sown the seeds of environmental awareness in the young minds of this buzzing Pallikarani kid community. Thanks to the helping hands of Nambi and Crew from CTC Ainthinai, Waste Win organization (Nochikupam Zero Waste Model initiative) who had made this event even more informative and interesting.

The program started with a quick 20 minutes interactive session with the kids. The children were very eager to answer the questions posed by Vanathi of CTC, the talk was guided with photo posters that depicted the various harmful effects of pollution on our surroundings and other living species of Mother Earth.  The enthusiasm of the young minds was kindled with Vanathi’s way of explanation. Nambi, Ashiq and the crew of CTC were very supportive by coordinating with the kids and the host. Ashit, Nandan and Santhosh were the first to grab the mike to answer Vanathi's question. Shristi the youngest in the crowd stood on the chair to explain her nine pointers on how to keep the environment clean.

The session was followed by a game show “Fastest in finding the Alternative”. It was a thought provoking  game that increased the momentum of the little ones. Teams were split and questions were posed. The members have to identify the plastic pollutant alternative that was shown to them such as plastic bag, use and throw cups, spoons, plastic water bottles, refill pen, straw, etc. Environmental friendly, reusable and alternative things were hidden inside the hall and the kids have to find them. The fastest gets the first place. Team 1 bagged the consolidated win. Congratulation!

Shyam and Priya of Waste Win organization joined the kids during the second half of the session where they inculcated the source segregation concept into the genius minds. The names of the different household wastes such as kitchen waste, plastic waste, rejected waste and e-wastes were written on colorful balls. Each kid has to pick one and should drop them in the right bin. Two bins (RedGreen) and two bags (one for recyclable and other for e-waste) had been kept. The audiences were dumb struck as most of the genius got it right when they segregated it in the right way. They will definitely make their parents’ job easier when it is going to be done at home in the weeks to come.

Last but not the least, the much awaited painting activity started after the game got over. Kids were all set to express their 2 hour experience in the session with their colorful tools of paint.  Twenty minutes were given for them to showcase their expressions and each one did an excellent job. Nambi asked them to narrate about their paintings and the concept behind them.  Participation certificates were issued to all the kids. Three paintings were selected and was awarded with books as a mark for encouragement. Pranav ( 3051), Harshitha (3027) and Hareesh bagged the first, second and third prize respectively.

Thanks to the wonderful team which helped us to ignite the little minds in a big way. Not only the little minds were ignited but also the adults as there was a presentation done by Waste Win organization at our reading room about their success stories of Nochikupam Zero Waste Model when the kids program was in progress.

Weekday Morning Trek & Night Camp
WRITE UP - Vignesh

How it started?
I joined CTC group almost a year back and hadn’t participated in any event but was simply observing CTCs activities in mail and in Facebook. I was not sure whether I will be fit enough for a trek and hence wasn’t ready to join any event. However, I was constantly inspired to attend any one event after following the group for a year now. So I registered for this night camp plus trek event(which doesn’t require a fitness test) and even after registering I was in dilemma whether to go or not. Somehow I was fascinated by Vanathi’s words in the mail, explaining how peaceful it will be away from the city pollution and routine life.

Starting to VIT
After I decided to go and confirmed the same with Vanathi  I  reached by pickup point, Velachery. Due to a miscommunication, Vanathi mistook me for another Vignesh and she asked me to contact someone else when I called her after reaching my point. I was directed back again and I was little hesitant whether to continue or should I go back to home itself. Thank god, Nikhil came (Thanks buddy. You gave me a wonderful company during the whole event). Luckily he was also a new comer for the CTC. We decided to go to the final meeting point VIT. After crossing Medavakkam signal, we were travelling in a less traffic road. I was wondering whether I am really in Chennai. I remembered Vanathi’s words of peaceful moments and thought may be the final destination will be even more calm and nice. We are one of the first few to reach the place. Before us, Sathish and Manjunathan was waiting at the VIT gate. We introduced ourselves and decided to get to know each other better as they are newcomers too. One of the reason I attended the event was to meet this famous man, Peter, about whom I heard a lot and read a lot and noticed a lot in mails too. I used to wonder how this man can do and participate in so many activities. People started to come in groups and nearly after 30 min, all are present.

Reaching our destination
A few kms away from VIT and we reached our final destination and started to walk towards the point which was decided by the organizers.  It was such a dark area but really nice and calm location. Located near to a quarry, it was extremely silent and only the moon light was available for us to walk though the path. As said by the organizers, it was really a wonderful place to spend our time, cook and have fun with people whom we never met before.  Once we unpacked the tarpaulins and other stuffs, few went to collect water for cooking and I along with few others, decided to help for cooking. Roughly 10 people are ready to help, only to find knives are missing (samayal panna mathiri than). Luckily I had one knife and one more knife helped us and since only 2 knives are there, I was roaming and was trying to do some help wherever required. After a little help with vegetables cutting, I went to the NV team who were cleaning the chicken with so much dedication (Manjunathan- unga dedication ku alave illa buddy  😀 ). Once cleaning was done, we were ready for the BBQ. We just want to remove the baby potato and paneer in the BBQ ASAP and want to start chicken so desperately. Finally the time came for chicken and we started. Manjunathan and Saravanan again just sat quietly and did most of the work here (thanks buddies and thanks ashish who sincerely distributed chicken to each and everyone). Now it was little boring as nothing much was happening other than cooking stuffs. When things got silent, Raghu came (Hero introduction). This trek would have been little boring without Raghu, Vinoth and Mr. 21 (forgot ur name bro. But unaku 21 name than perfect  😀 ). Unlimited fun with these guys with Vinoth’s exaggerated reactions and Mr. 21’s awesome replied whenever Raghu ask something (apdi ena kelvi ketaru?? Aduchu kooda kepanga.. solidathinga..  😀 ). While few went to take swimming, we were having our laugh outs with people whom I never saw before. Even now most of their face wasn’t visible as it is extremely dark. But still, it went like we were buddies for years. Even after dinner, the fun continued till 1-2am with Raghu sharing his genius knowledge to newcomers (Machi… unoda sevai elarukum thevai… ).

Morning Trek
We woke up at around 5:30 in the morning and after some little laziness, we packed up and started. While packing everything inside the car, a new friend, Arjun, a Labrador dog greeted us. We weren’t sure whether Vanathi shouted out of fear or the dog was pulling the bag (enaku bayam illa illa nu solitu iruka.. but kannula marana bayam terunjathe vanathi 😀  raghu would agree with me). With Peter and Vinoth sir(Another Vinoth) guiding us, we started our hiking and came to see mind-blowing views of the city and the outer Chennai beauty. Here Vinoth steal the show and entertained with his craziness for photo posing. Every now and then, whenever Shashi opened the camera shutter, Vinoth will freeze for a pose (oru solo photo kooda inum share panalaye machi.. 😀 ). After 45min-1hr, we reached down and now its time for swimming (but namaku swimming teriyathe). Luckily(for me) few people doesn’t know swimming and I joined them. No words can explain the fun we all had here in waters. Singing and playing with Raghu leading us for special games, it was one of the memorable moments. Aswini, with her 8 months tamil knowledge was quick enough to mingle with all and was singing many songs. Raghu’s water game and the way he taught us again was a fantastic one (antha teaching ah open ah type pana mudiyala machi). After one hour, I and Nikhil decided to start back to our city life. Last but not the least, while I was leaving, Aswini called out Vinoth (Photo freak-nalla pera irukum machi unaku) saying someone was taking picture. She tried to tease him for his craziness to pose for photo but he actually ran out of water with so much enthusiasm(apdi photo la ena than aarvam? ) and started posing (but camera ilaye..).

Way back to City life and realizing the previous night

While returning, me and Nikhil had a goodtime as the Mambakkam- Medavakkam stretch was quite pleasant (which we couldn’t notice the previous night) and felt as like I am riding in a village. I reached Medavakkam signal and I immediately informed Nikhil, we reached Chennai as the traffic started choking. After dropping Nikhil, I reached my home at 10 and just sat down and started to recollect the wonderful memories again and again. I felt refreshing, energetic and got more enthusiasm to participate in more such events. I will surely take a fitness test soon and will participate in a full fledge trekking. To all the people who attended this event, Thanks a ton and you all in some way made it as a wonderful trip.

 TIT BITS from the trip
Vanathi- Hyperactive gal with so much energy and friendly attitude. (but dog na konjam bayam pola.. and antha bike owner mela ena kovam unaku nu teriyala..  😀 )
RaghuHero sir.. If you weren’t there, many of the new comers would have felt a little boring I believe. (antha story ah v ll continue from TTK road machi.. ).
Mr. 21 – Thou many of ur comments stands out, “COFFEE” comment was ultimate (only Raghu &co will understand this).
Vinoth (photo freak)- Ur reactions were awesome even during storytelling and in the morning, it was outstanding with ur craze for posing. Ur chorus during singing(in the waters) was fascinating.. (after all namma rendu perum thalapthy fan machi..)

Sathish – You were almost present in each n every small groups and was active throughout the trip..

-------------------------

Trekking is not an event, not a sport but an Experience, that teaches you to live outside your comfort zone.

I was most excited to see the invite for the trek from Praveen (as usual very colourful). Registered for the trek the next minute I saw the invite. But started thinking after it..... Its been nearly a year since I last trekked and it was a moderate+ trek. But I was mentally prepared and very much happy about the thought of a trek after a very very long time.

Finally after waiting much, the day came, Oct 1............. but I was the last one to reach my point and boarded the van... Happily settled and the van went to CMBT while we had enough time to talk to our mates. After sometime the van started from CMBT and we were getting closer to our trek. Going towards Andhra and Ragavee checking some accounts with all those music of all languages we were just crossing the Tamilnadu border when our Van went flat tyred (An awesome start to an Awesome trek), all of us got down and just found the right place to hang out (The tea kadai). After the puncture works, we started our journey with some comeback songs. Finally reached the west entry of Nagala around 9 am getting parcel of our breakfast. Then the organisers distributed the common items. I got a tarp to carry which I was actually proud of.......

Then we started our trek from the base. Hamal Raja and Manikam took the lead while Praveen and "Heaven Guy" took care of the sweap team. Starting was as usual exciting and the only thing in my mind was breakfast :D so I started feeling kind of hungry. We reached the first pool and it was breaking the fast point.

Each hike rewarded us with small pools and waterfalls which made us feel refreshed and ready to climb the big one. The real hiking started on our way to the fifth pool where we had to climb one big hill. It was difficult for me and I started to feel the heaviness of my bag. I was quite determined not to give my bag or the tarp to anyone because the feel you get when you reach the destination with your bag is unbeatable.

The more difficult the journey the more beautiful the destiny. This was totally true for the fifth pool. With a short break of about 15 minutes we started our trek again with small small hikes and then getting down in the stream with boulders. Walking in the boulders were quite easy till Manikam showed me a boulder which was as tall as an apartment :O. Then we deviated and walked uphill..... The deviation marked the end of water. We climbed uphill and broke in the middle for lunch which was yummy bread and jam.

We were told by Hamal Raja that half of our first day was over with that hike and then its all way downhill. We finished that hike then started descending again in the stream. Time was pushing us towards our first day camp site THE PICNIC POOL. We were trying to reach the campsite before it was dark but the sun was setting faster than our walk. So we decided to camp in the way and to cook Maggi for the day's dinner. We actually struggled a lot with the cooking part but the final product came out well. Then we started to wrap our day off by 9 pm when people actually decided to set up a camp fire for the night. Then all the others started singing random songs of all genres..... That's when we found out some awesome talents (Sid Sivaram) . We closed the musical night only by 11pm and we had to start our next by 5.30 in the morning. So we dozed off quickly and woke up even more faster.

Our next day started in the boulders with an aim to reach the treasure hunt and the picnic pool as soon as possible. So pushed ourselves into walking to see the beautiful pool with small breaks in between. We also gave a small surprise to Claire who was celebrating her birthday in the middle of Nagala.

We reached Picnic pool by 9.30 am  with many people already there to welcome us. We had one full hour to enjoy there and to have breakfast which was milk (no sugar experience) and rusk. We packed our things again and started off in a jiffy and climbed up the picnic pool and up and up and up to exit as soon as possible. We climbed the hill with short breaks helping each other. We had some awesome views in the middle. We then descended and then ascended without water the whole way. I couldn't walk very well but got inspired by Sobana, Lise and Amanda (This little one really inspired me). Then our way down to the exit was easy and we did it with smiles in our faces. We came down by 1.30 pm and reached our van. Heard some good stories from Manikam about his past treks.

Then the singing season 2 started in the van with some terrific moves from Ram. Then the most awaited Lunch break came which I can not forget till now.
We reached chennai by 5.30 pm with loads of memories and the beautiful, fun filled trek came to an end to our body and mind, but, will live forever in our hearts.........

Thanks to
Praveen -  For organising this trek
Hamal Raja - For being our walking GPS
Heaven Guy and Ram - For entertaining us
Rupesh Arvind - For pushing me to walk well throughout the trek
Prakash - For capturing the moments
And all others for making it a memorable trek...........

Regards,

Tadagala Expedition Oct 2016 (Nagada Historical Mission) by Mani Raj (Photographer at Frozen Moments)
Organized by Muthu Kumaran, Jayanthan, Hamal

The day we stop exploring is the day we commit ourselves to live in a stagnant world, devoid of curiosity, empty of dreams!        Neil Tyson

When I first read the mail from Vishal about Historical Nagada Trek, I started searching more information about it online when I bumped across an old exploration trek of CTC back in 2011 which spoke about the abandoned jeep trail, the lookout of the British and temple and I got interested immediately and registered for it.

Day 1:
The final count of persons who were going to be part of the historical mission after many dropouts was twenty. Muthu and Amal were the last to join us after Muthu’s alarm failed him badly. Off we went to Tada and got dropped before the falls entrance and started hiking. Our van would be waiting for us at Nagala East TP kottai dam after we complete our mission.  After a short hike towards the falls, we silently climbed up some steep boulders to get away from the falls crowd.

The climb got steeper as we moved on and Muthu spotted a nice viewpoint and started climbing towards it.  Jack, Amal and Subha took care that nobody was lagging behind and soon the entire team reached. After some clicks and rest, the team moved on.

It was getting hot and humid as we climbed up and soon we were near a pool on top of Tada. It was a small pool with crystal clear water, so clear that you could see your own reflections.  Now most of them started diving from all directions into the pool and my camera got into action soon. Some were having a nice shower.

After a refreshing bath that cooled us, we were off through the gorges of Tada . We halted at two thirty for our lunch.  Puliogare rice brought by some our fellow trekkers was a real treat. We decided to have a quick power nap  to escape the afternoon heat.  I was not getting sleep so started clicking some pics.

We started around 4pm and hiked some steep sections to reach leaf pool. Muthu exclaimed during monsoons the pool will be filled by water flowing like a leaf over its rock.  Since Naga told us that they were having tickling water at the last water point when he came two weeks back for ‘INTO THE WILD’ trek Muthu decided that we would camp on top of Tada and head out for the lookout and come back again. Sounded like a perfect idea and I was all excited to see the centuries old lookout built by the British and the view of the plains it would offer.

But to our own disappointment we did not have even a trickle of flowing water at the last water point in Tada top.  Muthu took  a call that we will descend to the water point in the North west side and camp there. Armed with the new plan, we crossed over a small hill and marched towards the western side of Nagala range.  Even though we missed the classic lookout of the British, the Nagala mountain ranges still had something to surprise us, a gorgeous sunset over its hill ranges. May be this is what I have come to love about trekking in this lovely paradise, we are always not short of surprises.

The final descend to our campsite had to be managed with torches and it was pretty horrible with the thorny bushes ocassionally hindering our movement. We finally found the sound of moving water and reached our campsite and started lighting fire for our dinner. We managed to cook a nice soupy Maggi for our dinner. We hit the bed soon and ocassionally it started drizzling but got subdued immediately.

Day 2:
Early morning chats started with the strange noise heard around 4 am while it was a calm sleep for me atleast or did I not hear it.
After finishing our breakfast with some nice soup, Muthu informed everyone that today it is going to be a dry day with no water until we reach magic pool, so everyone started filling their tummies and bottles with water. Yeah! We were going to walk from Northwest to East exit through the jeep track. We walked to the small Ramar temple to notice how temples have always been an integral part of the mountains through ages. This one had wishes of many people who come once in a year to tie those wishes to the tree.

We descended from our campsite so that we reach the base of the mountain to spot the jeep trail. There was a clear demarcation of the jeep route just by the width of the trail. This is where Rajesh complained of pain in knees and was slow moving but still wanted to finish the trek. We started walking on the jeep track as it slowly ascended up. After that we left the jeep track for the steep sections where Rajesh found it tougher to carry himself. While Muthu was mulling over sending him back with Ravi and Subha through the North western exit he asked Naga to climb up the steep hillock and reach a flat space. Me, Naga and few others were climbing hard the steep hillock and reached the flat space.  We waited for Muthu and team but nobody turned up and so we echoed our voices through the valley to call them. Finally we found out that Rajesh has not exited and decided to carry on so they decided to traverse the hillock on the sides instead of climbing it so it was easy on him. We descended little bit and joined the team soon. Muthu and Jack were searching that trail which will lead us straight to magic pool instead of going through the valley. Jack did a recce and found it and from then on it was just more or less flat walk till we reached the streams which replenish the magic pool.We had some excellent views enroute of central peak and the valley .
We reached magic pool streams around 3pm and had some snacks. Then it was time for some good diving fun in the pools. Amal, aditya, selva all wanted to dive and have as much fun as possible and I got ready with my cam to get some cool videos.

Then we took cool shots of the eastern ridge of Nagala visible from magic pool. We headed to the Siva temple near the dam and reached our van around 5pm.  Finally it was a good experience meeting some new folks who did their first trek in Nagala with this one.

Green Wall Project at Govt Middle School, Neelankarai

What happens when ambitious individuals join together and plan something ??? We come out with crazy ideas 😜😜😜
One such crazy idea is the Green Wall 😁😁😁
If you can dream it, you can do it - Walt Disney

Who are we?
Team Neelankarai Ninjas was formed as part of CTC's annual 'Chennai Coastal Cleanup 7' event and is carrying on with the Community Development activities in Neelankarai. Together with CESAW, our efforts at the PUMS Govt Middle School is inching towards helping students develop eco-friendly life-style and habits with sessions such as Say-No-To Plastics, Composting, Paper Crafts etc.

After 3 continuous weeks of engagement in the school, we suggested to setup a Green Wall at the Neelankarai school on 16th of September, 2016. The H.M got very excited and she said proceed immediately 😎😎😎. We were pretty much amazed with such a support and we scheduled the event for the 21st of October, taking into account the preparation that's required to implement a project that is First-of-it's-kind in Chennai. .
Pre Event Preparations:

  • Water Bottles
    • We explained the project to the students and they brought around 10 bottles
    • We tried to gather a few bottles from the surroundings/clean up drives. Unfortunately we mostly found 1/2 litre bottles which were of no use based on our plans
    • We contacted Mr. Raghupathi of Kabaleeshwarar Nagar Association, on Wednesday requesting his help for the bottles. Guess what.. on Friday when we went to the school for our regular visit, he was there with 50+ bottles that was collected from all the houses in Neelankarai Kabaleeshwarar Nagar Association. We were super excited and thanked him profusely for his immediate support.
Mr. Raghubathi - Kabaleeshwarar Nagar Association
    • All such collected bottles were washed & cleaned by our ultras of the team Ahamed Hanifa & Avinash Anbu & kept at Peter's place.
  • Plants
    • The choice of plants was governed by the facts such as: Medicinal Plants, Shallow Root, low maintenance
    • After much discussion within Neelankarai Ninjas team, we chose Karpooravalli/Omam, Thoothuvalai, Thulasi, and Button/Table Rose
    • Except button/table rose, the rest of them are medicinal plants providing simple cure for common ailments such as cold, cough, indigesion and headache.
    • Plant cuttings and seeds were gathered from homes of Neelankarai Ninjas
  • Compost for Plants
    • It was important that the plants needed nourishment. We decided to harvest the manure from the composting done by individuals at their homes.
    • Sai Karthick brought around 2 Kgs, and a few others brought their compost as well
    • Required soil was collected from Peter's house.
  • Wall Suspension
    • This was the most trickiest part as the wall had no points for suspension of bottled-plants
  • The architect master mind of our team Ar Dilip Srinivasan visited the place and after weighing in various option for the structure of the green wall it was finalised to prepare a flat framework(an iron rod - 30 feet in length) like structure & fix on wall & hang the bottles through steel wires
  • There were other ptions too - but none proved feasible:
    • Drilling of wall & Fixing : Wall made of Karunkal so very tough to drill & high chances of drill & wall getting damaged
    • Using nails for suspending : Weight of bottles cannot be supported on drill as we plan to have 4 bottles in a row
    • Using of Round steel bars(Muruku kambi): Though cheaper per kg then the flat one(Patta kambis) we need to buy Double the weight (equalling the cost of flat ones)& due has high chance of bending due to heavy weight & also it cannot be riveted & fit
    • Using of Flat steel bars : Costlier than round ones but can be riveted & fit , easy for us to fit the steel wires. Easy to dismantle as no welding is done but just screwed.
  • As stated above we chose the flat(Patta kambi) steel bars as it looked more elegant & easier to fix.The flat steel bars were given for welding & it was collected a day before the event & kept at school.

The Event Day:
On event day, we started with a slight delay. Sagayam had arrived earlier & with help of CTC's volunteers fixed the clamps and rods on the wall to suspend the bottles with plants.
Manure & soil were brought by our Sai Karthick from his own home compost.
We arrived with the washed bottles from Peter's place , immediately started dividing the CTC volunteers & the children of the school into four teams and assigned them the following tasks  :

  1. Cutting of bottles
  2. Filling Mud & Manure in bottles
  3. Planting the seeds/plants
  4. Fixing the bottles on Green wall

"A challenge only becomes an obstacle when you bow to it."

Nothing is challenging for the CTCians, they did a beautiful job of not only completing the given tasks but also guiding the children in filling the cut bottles with soil, manure & planting the saplings😊😊😊
Dilip planned out how the bottles have to suspended & guided with the execution of the technique. This was followed by all of us & the bottles were hung from the fixed steel fixtures with support of the enthusiastic children.
Once all the bottles were hung, and the plants were watered, we gathered together the children and clicked some group pics & lots of selfies 😜
.
The main objective behind this was to teach the children a way to reuse the plastic bottles which would have either ended up as landfills or burnt up & also to create an awareness amongst the locals about simple natural medicinal plants that should be present in all homes.
Though we had a delayed start we had a wonderful, rather I would say beautiful ending because we felt we achieved our objectives as many kids promised to try keeping plants like this in their homes.

During the event a number of local residents inquired about the activity and were interested in replicating the same in and around their homes.
Our joy was multiplied manifold when the auto drivers not only promised to protect it but they started cleaning around the wall saying this would make the place more beautiful and laid a few sacks of sand to prevent people from littering around.

With the sense of achievement we thanked all the participants & kids and ended this beautiful day.
Although some people were not able to make it today they were very instrumental in achieving this beautiful dream namely our great Peter Van Geit, Thala Ahamed Hanifa & Lovable Varatha Raja.

Inspiring Donor stories – The journey of gaining Hemoglobin and becoming a first time donor

Experience of a first time donor (Anu) in Chrompet GH during blood camp on 2nd Oct 16

What inspired you to turn up for a Blood donation camp?
My understanding is that human body has the capacity to regenerate the lost blood, so I wanted to donate blood so that it would be of use to someone in need during an emergency. I couldn't donate my blood when my dad underwent his by-pass surgery. I had to get help from my friends and colleagues. And I remembered how much gratitude I felt when they came forward without even minimal reluctance. Blood donation can be very gratifying.

After being sent back twice for lack of hemoglobin in previous blood camps, what motivated you to take up the rejections in a positive manner and seriously work towards improving HB. What were the steps taken by you for improving Hemoglobin? Rejection in a blood camp only motivated me to become healthy & make my body fit enough to be of better use to others. The only eligibility I lacked was the hemoglobin content & I was determined to touch the benchmark this time. I started cutting down tamasic food (food which is classified as dead/processed food as per Yoga) & increased the intake of satvik food (food which is classified as fresh & natural according to Yoga). In fact, I was looking forward to this camp & I didn't want to get rejected this time. So I ate papayas and drank lot of water 2 days before the blood donation campMy family has also been supportive about me contributing to a cause.
How do you feel physically after donating blood? (dizzy/ weak/ sick/ normal)? Normal. In fact, I drove back home 15km in my two wheeler 15min after my blood donation.
Would you recommend others to take up blood donation? Yes. Definitely. Being able to donate a part of you to save someone else's life is an extremely 'feel good' factor. The sense of happiness and achievement I felt is immense as I revived the moments when donors came forward and donated for my father. Once you are convinced about being of use in saving a life, there are some smaller benefits - you can overcome your fear for needless! Remember Madhavan in Anbe Sivam :) Within minutes, your body starts regenerating the lost blood and you can get back to your daily routine! I truly felt the above, and feel only more motivated to donate again!

As we approach the season of rains, blood need is at a peak high in all GHs across Chennai. Chrompet GH is yet another hospital which has been facing a deficit of blood donors. Multiple surgeries are getting postponed due to shortage of blood. If you are inspired to save a life, do sign up for our next blood camp with Chrompet GH on 12-Nov-16 (Sat) in Jaigopal Garodia School, East Tambaram.

Into the Wild - II

If our life is in our hand, why can’t our world!!!

Organiser’s –   Fitness Master –Rajasekaran (the lead) and
All in all - Nambi (the guide)
(A perfect fusion for a perfect trek)

It was not a spam mail, not an advertisement, not any deepawali offer and not any season sale but it is a mail with CTC tag, for which we all always pay immediate attention. And, it is a mail for a trek to Nagalapuram. After seeing all the tempting “Into the Wild Edition – I” photos, it’s now a call for Edition II.!

With so much of excitement I registered for the trek and waited patiently for the next mail from the organisers. Of-course I got one (Otherwise, I would have not made this write-up :p), it is not a preparatory mail but an invitation for fitness test. Yes, it is a moderate+ trek and it is mandatory even for a fit person to prove that we are capable for moderate+ treks to the organisers. Done with the test a week before the trek and now I got the preparatory mail. Yeahhhh!!

A day before the trek, Friday night the back-bag is filled with all the necessities for the next days and I slept early for catch the vehicle on time. My pick-up point was fixed at Madya-Kailash at 4:45 AM.I was expecting a Van but what I got is a share-auto: p (A prime Car) at 5:10AM it is already occupied with 9 and I am the 10thpersonto board and no wonder I was packed myself to fit inside the car, and I sat on Nagarajan’s lap, the first person to get introduced ;) more than any others I was eagerly expecting CMBT to come fast to free myself from the car.

It was 5:40 AM we reached CMBT and there was another part of the gang with few familiar faces welcomed us for a tea. Exchanging intro’s by each other’s, we finally started our trip at 6:00 AM in Micro, Swift, Enjoy and Wagon R back to back and headed towards the next stop for break-fast.

Without wasting much time and after a light break-fast we started to the final destination and yes, it is Nagalapuram. It is just 8:30 AM and the sun already started to test everyone’s patients. After few click’s we walked to cross the dam, just above the dam the view of the dry plains was not welcoming at all.

After a few minutes of walking we realised that we hit the bottom of the mountain and there was a stream with water (point to be noted). A call from Rajasekaran (Raj) to fill the water bottles and he informed that, this trek will be dry and then he gave instructions to be followed throughout the trek.

With much expectation we took a dry stream from south to reach the central peak. We all had a comfortable (comparatively) walk till we find a fault block. Raj gave instructions to take a different trail, which will be easy for everyone whereas he continued alone to claim the block. Then we took a steep trail which was very much testing and we reached a peak of an unknown spot.

And we figured out that we lost the path: p Raj came back for us and said to take a down trail to catch the dry stream again. Since we lost the path, there were no trails and we literarily got ourselves stuck in a bunch of thorns, now everyone got their Nagalapuram trademarks: D

                                                      Trademark

Its 1:00 PM now and we reached some average peak and still there were no sign of water, and all most everybody’s water bottle is empty. Now it is the time to test everyone’s endurance, Raj said we will reach the water point in 1:30hrs if nobody stops in-between (but that never happens). All the people were completely exhausted, after eating some fruits, we all started again to hit the first water point. Ignoring the sun and for the thirst of water we tried continued to walk in the same pace of Raj but he is ultra-fast.

Finally at 3:00 PM, Raj led us to a perennial stream. After taking a bottle of water I could able to feel myself back. Raj immediately after drinking some water filled all the bottles and left the spot to guide the rest of the team to the same water point. All gathered at 3:30 PM then we started with our lunch, Raj’s homemade tiger-rice (Tamarind Rice) was so delicious, as everyone filled their belly now it’s time for power nap (that is what I thought), since it was 4:30 PM, Raj said to spend the night at the same water point and he continued to say that he is going to take vengeance on day2 for not reaching the day 1 destination on time.

                                                Perennial Stream

As the sun set, we lit the fire to prepare dinner (menu: Pop-corn, Mixed-Flavours Soup and Noodles) as everyone circled the fire the night went on with common discussions, songs and tea sing’s:D.

After dinner, Raj guided everyone to the nearest camp site in the dark at 9:00 PM later everyone found their comfortable spot for sleeping. As everyone decided to sleep few started with Antakshari, later half of the population joined together (Few highlights about the singers: na na na – Sahana, beep – Saro, Gana – Karthick and finally the one with good voice - Prabhu). At 10:45 PM everyone winded-off everything and went off to sleep. And that’s all for Day-1 we oddly finished 8-9Kms.

Day : 2

5:30 AM in the morning, as one by one started to stretch their body from tarp. And after, quickly completing morning duties everyone filled their water bottles and got prepared to face Raj’s revenge:p without any break in-between.

We reached the Central Peak at 8:30 AM. Wow the view from 750 meters from the centre peak of Nagalapuram was mesmerising. After having a some photo-shoot we took a downward trail and travelled towards the west walking through few greater upward steeps and downward steeps with very few minutes of breaks and no wonder as again there were no sign of water in between. Raj was literally punishing everyone by not giving any breaks.

At 11:30AM we found the second perennial stream and we got few minutes break, 11:45 AM again everyone started towards west and caught the south trails. Raj boosted everyone by saying that, “we are heading towards water stream” and at1:45 PM we witnessed it. Then it was time for lunch and few jumped into the water to get refreshed.

2:15 PM everyone packed their bags and walked through the water stream to catch the dead-end pool. Everyone had an easy walk over the stream as there were no deviations in between.

Finally, we reached the dead-end pool at 4:00 PM as the rest of the gang arrived at 4:30 PM. Now everyone got a chance to jump into water for the first time in this trek. Swimmers had a comfortable time while non-swimmers were floating with the help of their tubes; everyone enjoyed the water for some time.

At 5:30PM, as the sun light was fading away everyone realised that this trek was about to over and hardly digested that tomorrow will be a Monday Lafter walking few meters the complete darkness surrounded us at 6:30PM and with the help of torchlight and by listening to all the creeping sounds we came back to the start point at 7:30PM. Revenge was well executed as on day-2 everyone crossed 17-18 kms.

Before boarding the vehicles everyone started discussion about their dinner menu at Dabba starting from Chicken to Paal Payasam.

With so much of hunger for food everyone reached the famous Dabba at 9:45PM and all filled their bellies, our orders made the hotel server to feel tired :p Since it getting late for everyone, we exchanged our thanks to each other’s and left with a hope to meet the guys again in any other CTC events and treks and then everyone vanished to reach their home.

It was one amazing team to make an awesome trek and of course everyone got their respective Nagalapuram Trade-Marks, whereas Saravanan and Saranaya got minor injury (Happy recovery to you two). And, yes I got one wonderful gift from Nagalapuram it is a Stag’s Horn <3 .="" span="">3>

Weekday Morning Trek & Night Camp
WRITE UP by Nikhil

On time Reporting
It is customary, that at 6pm sharp, assignments spring up in my boss’s head out of the blue. I sat contemplating the excuse I should be giving as I did not want the person I had to pick waiting for long. Moreover, I remembered Vanathi’s mail which asked us to please report sharp on time in red and bold and bigger font (the gimmick). As if on cue, my boss called me at 6pm sharp. It is not every day you register to spend a night with 50 other strangers to cook together and sleep under nature’s blanket. The thought of breathing pure air flashed my mind. I ignored the call and in the minute that followed, I was out of office, throttling towards Velachery.

After meeting Abi, Kanishka and Gowtham, we started off in two bikes to VIT Chennai. Vanathi wasn’t joining us because ‘fortunately or unfortunately’, she planned  came to campsite all the way by cycle. We reached near VIT where we were greeted by another group of people. I met Peter for the first time and said my hello. ‘Where is Va-Ra-Dha-Ra-Ja?’, he asked around, neatly spreading the syllables. As more people joined, Peter and Colonel motioned us to follow their cars and so we did.
The lights faded, the air got colder and the roads dustier.

Atrocity @ Campsite

It was around 8pm when we reached campsite. I took some time to change into comfortable clothes. By the time I was ready, the tarpaulins were spread; vegetables, chopping pads and cutlery were laid out. The meal preparation had begun. The search for twigs, branches and firewood was also on in parallel. People were also helping setting up the cooking points. It was as if everyone already knew what exactly they had to do. For a moment, I felt lost but soon joined the team setting the fire. The vegetable choppers were enough in number. Talks and introductions were exchanged over firewood lighting, onion chopping and chicken cleaning. We were ready to cook in less than half an hour. Chicken and Mushroom were the first of the items followed by Sambar, Rasam (Raja’s ‘Athu Rasam illa Vesham’ still echoes) and rice. Ingredients were added meticulously while casually joking about previous cooking disasters.
I don’t know how some people had network and internet access. The 500/1000 ban was doing its rounds though most of us discarded it as rumors (only to realize it wasn’t the next day). Cooking together was fun as it involved lots of chatter, tastings and pulling each others’ legs. The dishes that were brought out were a result of the combined cooking knowledge of 50 people. B11pm, we started eating under the moonlit sky, graciously filling our stomachs with the joy of having prepared the meal together.

By midnight, almost everyone had settled down, some on the tarpaulin, some inside the tents, some near the freshly lit bonfire. The night plunged into the chilled wind constantly hovering. The stars danced in the sky and the moon crept to one side of the horizon keeping a vigilant eye on our proceedings. I closed my eyes momentarily drifting to sleep.
I was wide awake soon for two reasons. One, the incessant snoring and two, most importantly, the lovely ghost stories. I wasn’t listening when it started but soon one person near me stood up and went near the tent which was discussing the subject. We fondly called him the ‘thundu’ fellow. His voice had the characteristic that could only be described as ghastly. He started talking about what he claimed as his real life incident of encounter with a ghost. Mixing horoscope, stars and its movements, he narrated the incident with utmost focus and a disciplined tone. He paused in between to provide the speculative effect and sat down complaining of a vomiting sensation. All of us felt the creeps! By the time he had completed talking, we felt an unpleasant sensation in our stomachs (This was probably not because of the extra Garam Masala in Sambar or Rasam). The ‘thundu’ fellow then walked away and disappeared into the night. We had a wonderful humorous time talking and speculating paranormal experiences. More stories of army deaths, suicides, haunted places went on around the bonfire. The night was young and I was glad I had stayed up for all these conversations.

Morning Trek
At 5am, the chime of the bell flew along the morning breeze and I instantly got reminded of Sound of Music. Peter moved around the tarpaulin and the tents calling out to people. ‘Wake up, let’s go’, he said in his thick accent. By 5.30am, we were up and packed. I bid goodbye to the campsite as we took our vehicles and made our way out of the green space. The warm trees stand evidence to our stories and experiences of the night.
We were to climb a small hill surrounding the quarry for our morning trek. It was a clear trail with a few rocks and thorny shrubs. The sun took the form of a golden ball as it followed us in our climb. In no time, we had scaled the small hill. The view of the lake and the quarry was breathtaking. We took our photos and started our hike down the trail. A short swim was to be followed. As I knew little swimming only, I stayed within the limits. I could see many others swimming deep while some were basking in the morning sun. A lake brings you the kind of relaxation that makes you forget everything else going on in your life.

Returning to Concrete JUNGLE
After the swim, we checked our bags and started one after another hoping to see a similar face in the upcoming CTC events. As I took out my bike, I noticed a familiar ‘thundu’ lying lethargically on a fellow. I called out to him and asked his name. It was nice meeting you ‘thundu’ fellow. Abi and I started off in my bike to the unwelcome bustle of the city, to the polluted air, to the unnecessary comforts and the dull livelihoods. The memory of nature, fresh air, likeminded people and the peace of mind from this camp would stay until my next CTC event.

Unregulated use of pesticides in fruits, vegetables and grains – recent study

It is quite alarming to see these kind of news and the journey of food from farm to our plate in so much disturbed.  Fruits and vegetables are laden with harmful pesticides which paves way for many lifestyle diseases. The only way we could be sure of our food is to grow our own. Terrace or roof top gardening is gaining awareness among people and our government is also supporting such initiatives.

On October 8th - Saturday, CTC organized Home Composting and Terrace Garden practice session at CTCian Mr.Sundar's home. Mr.Sundar who has been practicing Terrace gardening for more than 4 years, lives in Mugalivakkam, Chennai. He welcomed us with a greeting smile and took us to his terrace. It was a pleasant sight to see his home surrounded with lush green cover acting as a home to colorful butterflies, chirping birds, squirrels and bees.

Once we all gathered, Sundar Offered us few leaf to take it. WoW !!! What a Surprise. Our Throat was filled with Natural Menthol. Great Relief for Nose. He had called it as “Vicks Tulasi”

Sundar started to explain us the process of composting. "The best way to connect with nature is to feel it" he added as he made us to get our hands dirty by touching and smelling the home made compost. The compost or black gold is rich in nutrients which enriches soil fertility.

Process of Composting:

Sundar uses earthen pots with holes at sides and bottom for composting in addition to fancy Kamba pots. We can make organic fertilizer at home with wastage from kitchen.

    • At the bottom of the pot, place few dry leaves and start adding vegetable waste.
    • Keep adding some soil or coco peat if the vegetable waste contains more watery stuff.
    • Add buttermilk water to fasten the composting process
    • Cover the pot to prevent the mixture from flies and rain water
    • It is usual to see insects like maggots and ants inside the pot. These insects greatly help in fastening the compost process and we need not worry about its existence.
    • Stir the contents of the pot every week. Fine yield of compost will be available within a span of two months

Sundar has managed to successfully grow Tomatoes, Brinjal, bottle gourd, lemon, Mint leaves, Lemon grass, varieties of spinach, Sugarcane, Pomegranates, Aloe Vera and different types of cacti .There is an array of herbal plants like Thulasi (5 Varieties), Neem, Thippili, Betel , Pei Mitrati, Nila Vembu, Nanal, Karisalankanni , Manathakkali, Vallarai, Chitrarathai,  Ranakalli, Turmeric, Ginger, Lemongrass, etc., He attributes his success to the preparation of nutrient rich soil, which he has managed to learn with his  experience and through lectures of Nammazhvar. The soil in his garden has many insects like earth worms, centipedes and millipedes which play a crucial role in soil aeration. Recently he has added beekeeping to his hobby with a couple of bee hives on his terrace

He keeps on offering some kind of leaves for us to taste and some are bitter, some are sour, some are nice fragrance, It is really amazing to see several herbs in his garden for the natural remedy.

“I do not throw any waste out of my home and we try to reduce plastics as much as possible. I make use of used milk packets, grocery, oil covers to plant saplings. All the organic waste from home is in turn converted to compost. It is necessary that people start segregating waste in their home. There is no use of even a single chemical or pesticide for the plants. I spend most of my weekend time in maintaining my garden and it gives me a lot of self-satisfaction and Piece. . My goal in life is to turn self-sustainable life style and not to visit doctor for health ailments. The money paid for health disorders can be very much prevented through investment in growing organic foods” ” he continued as he handed us a glass full of fresh Aloe Vera juice prepared from his terrace garden.

Preparing the potting container:

    • The container can be Earthen pot or grow bags. If you are using grow bags, place a thick sheet of newspaper surrounding the bag inside and a layer below
    • Now place dry leaves or twigs as a first layer below and add a layer of soil + cocopeat mixture.
    • Add a handful of neem  and thulasi leaves and cover with a layer of soil + cocopeat mixture
    • In the next layer, add some charcoal and cover with a layer of soil + cocopeat. The soil + cocopeat can be mixed in 1:1 ratio.

Mr. Sundar finds this method quite useful, as the bottom layer will in turn into compost while the roots get down to the bottom. The neem and thulasi act as agents to grow good bacterial medium enriching the soil. The charcoal provides the much needed carbon and potassium. Make sure that this soil mixture to be used only after 7- 10 days for planting.

Once plants are placed in the containers, make sure to add dry leaves around it. This process of mulching prevents weed growth and retains moisture content of the soil. Sundar grows either an aloe Vera or neem plant adjacent to the plant in each container.

Fo Pest Control

He uses natural pesticides like neem oil, neem cake, liquid drain from compost pot and 3G mixture (Ginger, Garlic, Green chili solution). "We do not need any chemicals. Natural repellants like neem oil (10ml mixed in one liter of water) is sufficient to drive away pests. I use drip irrigation method to water my plants. Initially i invested a lot for garden and equipment but later realized that it is not necessary." he added.

On Lifestyle:
“I do not use soaps and usually take bath with Aloe Vera gel grown in our garden. I brush my teeth with neem twigs. We maintain fasting once in a month with only liquid foods taken the whole day.  We intake few herbs on regular basis.  I ensure not to skip breakfast. We shop through organic farm markets and through my trusted sources for organically grown rice.

Mr.Sundar has also installed solar panels to power his home as another step for a cleaner environment which also saves him 50% of cost on electricity bill. It is no wonder that his home had 24*7 electricity even while the floods and power cuts lashed Chennai last year.

Terrace gardening is fun, eco-friendly and helpful for self-sustainable healthy lifestyle. Start by segregating waste and compost preparation and home. Take baby steps in making your own garden. Learn and experiment. Spread this message and create awareness among your community.

Let’s make our rooftops our food factory. Give it a start and start small. You do not need a huge space. Just a balcony with adequate sunlight is enough to grow tomatoes and greens.

Anyone who wish to volunteer during weekends and learn gardening can contact Mr.Sundar through his Facebook page www.facebook.com/ssundar.india  or at9840910551

Let us protect and save our environment. Happy gardening!

CTC Personalities - Varatha Raja

When we have all known about Vasool Raja this cover story brings us to know about an amazing Human being , Trekker, Cyclist, Tri-athlete,Volunteer and recently into ultra-running and its our one and only  Varatha Raja.

How did you start with Chennai  Trekking Club ?

I started with CTC from the 2015 Chennai Floods. I was involved actively in rescue and immediate relief in quite a few places in and outside the city. During the course of this I heard about CTC and its work and joined them on Jan 1st 2016 early morning 5.30Am at Kotturpuram Nizhal Tree Park for a cleanup.

Share us your first event with CTC.

The need to begin a new year with something more satisfying than a drink and 12 hours sleep was the best decision I have ever taken in my life so far.

Believe me when I say, the experience was totally unbelievable. I loved each and every minute of it. The dirt, the plastics, the waste, the actual koovam, we were amidst everything and reeked of mild to moderately disgusting smells of various stages of decomposition even before the tea break.
The volunteers are the true pillars of CTC, the way they handled themselves and gave room for newbies to become a part of them was the turning point.

By the end of that day, we had cleaned the park, made the gutter flow without any block, emptied litres of tea and juice and made a bunch of new friends.

How did you move to the Fitness Activities?

CTC, apart from being a life changer in not only the civic sense, but also is physically enduring.
I was keenly involved in cleanups and sapling maintenance. Then slowly I began to notice that the volunteers who come for cleanups and maintenance also take part in many other activities like running, swimming, trekking, and ultra hill running and cycling .

Now, all these concepts were totally new to me, yes I do knew about them, but to get involved in them? No way!

But life plays games on us all… the need to be a part of it arose in me seeing my friends actively participating in it. Especially Ahamed Haniffa, one of the few whom I look up to and admire since my first day in CTC.

He is an avid runner, trekked, ultra hill runner, cyclist, and most importantly a bloody amazing friend.
So, thus came my first step into physical activity. Ahamed knew I would take the bait easily if it was anything related to water. So, he took me to my first session at ottiyambakkam open waters after a tiring Clean up under the harsh sun in the marshland of Pallikaranai.

That's it, I totally fell in love with the quarry then and there.
Since then we are regulars and more than regulars there.
I am not a good swimmer, but I am decent enough to handle myself.

How did you land in doing Triathlon?

In march of 2016, CTC conducted its full iron triathlon and i was a volunteer for the swim rescue team. I was speechless looking at athletes participating in the tri event so confidently and gracefully. It ignited a spark somewhere within me and I started pestering my all time torture partner Ahamed about what's it take to do the event.

Thus started my cycling and running(walking fast) in order to participate in the next triathlon.
In between all this I started going to weekday camps, blood donation camps, CCC7 awareness programme, and trekking with CTC.

What started as a serious practice for triathlon lost its momentum among so many other activities and the practice was just 1% when finally the day came.

I participated in the Sprint level Triathlon and completed only because of the push and boost of all my friends. It was such a rush to have your friends along when yo complete something that so many people told impossible for a guy weighing 170kg. Yes, I do weigh 169kg.

I make four times the effort a guy with regular weight does. Yes, swimming, cycling, running, trekking everything is that much hard for me, I feel sad about it, but when I am among all these wonderful people I have no problem… because they support me, push me, help me in any way they can and I love each and everyone boundless.

-                                                        -

What is that you dream to achieve?

My biggest achievement is CTC.
My biggest achievement in CTC is my FRIENDS.
Yes, I have a very silly goal in my mind.
I would love to win a medal in all four categories for the triathlon, sprint, Olympic, half and full.
It's still a long way to go… but I will.

So much of motivation and support from the CTC family is such a blessing and to top it all Peter encourages me every time, everywhere, and gives me an opportunity to grow as a person and perform even among such hardcore ultra hill runners and cyclists.
Now, what more do I need to live among nature with so many thrilling and adventurous activities performed so close to nature along with like minded friends !

How do you do a work life balance?

Hi, jobs have never been my forte, since my college days I have always had an eye of business and took it up seriously. I am an freelance SEO analyst and this gives me flexible working hours and ample time to engage in all my other interests which I totally love about my life now.

Plantation and Palm Seed Sowing @ Manapakkam - Nov 12 & 27, 2016

CTC Aintinai team thanks all the volunteers who have spent their valuable weekend at the banks of river Adayar at Manapakkam in Sowing Palm seeds Planting, Maintaining Saplings.

Palm tree takes minimum 15 to 20 years to give benefit. There is an ancient Tamil saying which says that a person who plants palm tree is mature enough to think about the next generation, as most of the benefit will be for the next generation. Since crores of palm trees exists and existed in India this talks about the compassionate culture with which people lived here.We have lost the crores of Palm trees gifted to us by our forefathers over the period of time because of our short-sight. A tree which grown over several decades were sold our for just fifty rupees or even lesser in many villages to brick industries. The Trees which hosted nests for several hundred birds and provided fruits to us were converted to ash in no time. Any small effort is valuable at such a time.
Few hundred Palm seeds were sown in last few months by Team Ainthinai on various lake bunds across  and Outskirts of Chennai. We hope this grows and  benefit the next generation.

Uses of Palm Tree:

Palm sugar was one of the important export item from India a few centuries ago when the East India Company was functioning in India.
Till, about 150 years ago, until British induced the influx of white cane sugar, palm sugar was the staple sweetener used by Indians. Because of Palm Sugar’s rich calcium, iron and vitamins, the bone strength and general health of people was good. After the change in this food habit, the Indian population fell into severe malnutrition and anemia. Today every 3rd malnutritioned child is an indian child. 3 out of 5 indian women living in village is anemic.

Drinking Palm Neera used to be the break fast of Indians during the flowering season of the tree. Looking at the nutrition it adds everyday, off the flowering season, people didn’t want to loose the advantage. So they condensed palm neera into palm sugar and started consuming everyday with hot and cold drinks like ‘paanagam’. In many places the habit of eating a bit of palm sugar before drinking water anytime, existed! (My own grandma maintained this habit everyday till she died at the age of 85 and her general health especially her bone and denture health was amazing! She didn’t loose her teeth till 80 years of age!)

WRITE UP BY KOVAI SATHISHKUMAR KRISHNAMOORTHY

Happy to be a part of CTC's - Ainthinai team.
I have been in chennai for 5 yrs but only in last 5 months i am a regular at plantation events. All the volunteers i have seen here are just single minded people??? Yup they are spending their Sunday's for our future generation's live without any interrupt for their breath!!! I was surprised to notice a few volunteers are traveling one part of the city to almost other corner of the city every week!!!

Maximum all people will say i have no time so sorry i will join in next events and few will tease us like 'Naata thirutha poranama' - going to change this nation
Organizer's and volunteers are calling me as 'Machi' that single word gives me the feeling  that i am filled with friends and forgetting all stressful office work and motivates  me to be more active for upcoming events!!!
While doing field work also we are enjoying by teasing others as friendly!!!

Ainthinai's main motto is not only planting Saplings for the counts but they also organize maintenance drive too in alternative weekends!!!
Corporate company like CTS  are encouraging their associates to participate actively in the events by providing cab's. I met one of my college friend in green day location maintenance drive (kambaraja puram). He was teasing me when i am studying in college what you will get if do social work always!!! I saw the change here, that guy also participated Ainthinai's event bcos he might be understand now about our future!!!
I am inspired by few organizers like Manoj(chubby boy), Parthi(Rules), two Naan's(Naan nu solli oora emathum rendu jeevangal) , Siva(Cambodian king), Abirami (Swarna Akka) Thanapal(Dhulkar) Maas(Master lee) sorry ivanga peru mattum thaa enaku therium mathavangala machi illana ji nu kupte samalichuten !!! Night Camp nu solli samachu palaginaalum sapidra maathiri irukarathu thaan kootanchoru( during the night camp we learn how to cook but we will get final output as eatable one. We cant say the dish name while we start cooking, name can decide after cooking is done)

Photographers - you all are not a professional photographers but you all are showing us beautiful ( oru vela camera kulla fair & lovely cream hu poturupaangalo) i think they kept fair & lovely cream inside their lens😝
Teaching how to plant Saplings to all new entries ( vantha mothal naale namma English eh ketu shock aagaravanga) and how to dig and after planting how to keep supporting sticks and how to make bunds!!!

Since CTC is a non - profitable organization every will share the amounts min 50 rupees for food and refreshments - we are spending money for some other stuffs( evalovo selavu panroem itha panna maatoem ah)
Ingaiyum fun tha oru vada thaa tharanga(nee kudukara 50 roobaiku 50 vadai ah tharamudium) they will give one vada and pongal, idlies!!!
One funny moment if you share your plates with 5 or more people - everyone will eat faster and one who finish eating at last, needs to wash that plate lol

Last but not least - wanna thank all the volunteers who is coming on Sundays and giving your valuable time for the good cause. Never give up efforts due to some  negative comments from people and take inspiration  from the  ones who appreciate you!!!

We are from different culture and different places but we are mingled together here for to do something for our society!!!

Every plantation drive is unique; every plantation drive is meaningful in a way we serve to Mother Nature. This is another unique event with the support of Highways department to plant saplings along the road side. The usual scene of pulling the trees out from the roads is now turned to be putting the trees back on the track.

Yes,The highways department officials are very friendly with Ainthinai team and understand the real concern of the environment impact on carbon emission comes out from the vechiles and supports us the solution of planting. We name the project as “Green Roads”, we have decided with the team to plant 2 kms of road – thiruporur to Mahabalipuram ( Near mahabalipuram toll gate ) with fencing and assuring good amount will be spent maintaining the saplings.

200+ Saplings has been planted by the green hands of CTC, 40+ Volunteers joined from different parts of city scarifying their Sunday morning lazy sleeping, The planted saplings are Maghilam, Naval, Poovarasu which are our native trees, that would adapt to the soil easily on the area we have planted.
The usual question comes in our mind,
🌿What would happen if the road is extended?
We have planted saplings on the boundaries of the highways dept area not near by the road. So our saplings will not see axes as enough space is left between the road and the saplings.
🌿Who will water the Saplings?
Highways department office is very near to the Mahabalipuram tollgate, they assured to water the saplings with a tractor regularly.

🌿How to prevent it from Cattles?
Fencing has been made with thorn tree (Seema Karuvela Maram, not the native tree – Karuvela Maram )

The event started with the usual Hi, Hello, Vada machan smiles. Volunteers placed in their positions with required tools and instructed well how to manage the pits good for saplings that were actually done with JCP – Machine work. The clay soil was not friendly to the volunteers to adjust the pits however team managed with good amount of physical work. The officer from Highways department didn’t stand on the road like BOSS – Thallu Thallu Thallu! Vadivelu job ☺ But they joined with us like a regular volunteers that is what we call it as “Be the Change”.

It was impressive to see their action on the field instead of just sponsoring the event with saplings. Few diamonds always exists inside the Government premises without glowing.
Tough souls kept planting saplings by placing support stick in the middle and covering the soil with mulching – bio dry leaves. Few kind hearts entertained the team with mokka jokes to keep the team up in the energy. Few kind hearts shared biscuits and supplied drinking water. Few shared their past trek, outdoor experience to the new comers.
Finally, we managed planting 200 saplings in both sides of the roads by 09:30 am starting from 07:00 am. Wow! that was a great effort indeed by Ainthinai volunteers.

Why do these guys make their time to plant saplings on Sunday morning instead of relaxing in home?
The passion drives you hard, so hard that makes time to have the satisfied heart ☺
The satisfied heart gives you the real relaxation with good amount of physical work and refreshing mind.
There are few conversions of people passing by roads which I want to highlight below, that gives clear picture on people’s view on seeing us digging pits, planting trees.
X: Hey, what is the crowd doing here?
Y: Chumma scene machan, plant pannitu facebookla poduvanga
X: What is the use of planting trees..who will water it ?
Y: Correctu. I don’t know why these guys are wasting time.
X: Bike slow down…slow..slow and gear up
Y: Enna machan…
X: Illa, chumma pathen. (Just saw)
X: Thambi, Freeya sapling tharuveengala ?

X: Enna sir… social servicea.. unga organization peru ?
Those were few funny comments passed on us, but it was really enjoyable. Nobody stopped the vehicle and asked for the reason of planting. Those were passing clouds that will never come back. ☺
We as a society need to have the courage to help the environment and spread the awareness to these passing clouds who has less awareness about the importance of tress.
We moved to Highways department office to have breakfast and filled out tummies with idly, pongal ☺ And, we never failed to  celebrate any volunteers B’day during the event, It was Cute-Manoj to be a victim to get the bums ☺

Cake cutting, selfies and post speech about the event to the volunteers went fine with a limited time. We left the location with the hope of Green Roads.

For the guys like me - u will wake up. Brush ur teeth.  Pee and poo... U will open the gate..
Dai naaye(dog) .  Time is 1 30,am. Shut ur ass and sleep..  Was the voice of my mom.
For people like Abirami..  Either clock   will be one hour slow or she will wake up by 3 am and will wake us all and make us to sit in tea shop by 5 15 am(when meeting time is actually 6 am🙄)

And ultimate  you ll speak to the tea shop Anna for several minutes  Saying u want masala tea without milk(I.e) black tea in terms of Abirami. And finally he brings the tea with milk.!!
And people like me will think while bathing or pooing..whether will the event will be good..  Will the. People will mingle?

Guys like Naan Sundar and Heaven Guy  will think whether good looking girls will come that too single.. 😀
Will. I. Be able to give lift..  Will I be dropped by some cutie pie.. Chubby..  Bubbly etc etc guy or gal...
Will I have energy to plant?
Will any infection come when we touch mud ?
..  All these questions will run
through until u step out..  ?
So this much big essay is just to say..

After going throuhh these many issues..  We are just stepping out for saving mother nature and a green environment
We are always different
When some advises you saying why u are like this..  Think that they are in or from  different world..
Also was nice to see guys coming with their parents..  And some times whole family come..
