Post Trip Write up - Chennai South Cycling, June 23rd

On Sunday morning around 20 members succeeded to get out of their lazy beds and appear at Thirunvanmiyur junction for the start of a refreshing ride along the Southern outskirts of the city.

We started off along the OMR amid the morning traffic of the never sleeping city until we hit Sholinganallur where we took left onto the ECR link road before leaving the busy tar roads onto the silent dirt track alongside the scenic Buckingham canal. The peacefulness of the surroundings immediately felt like blessing from the crowded and noisy city. As we pedaled 10km along the canal we could see high rise apartment blocks alongside the IT corridor reflecting on the water surface. The canal got wider as we moved along and more water birds appeared as it merged into the backwaters near Muttukadu.

The clouds shielded us from the rising sun and a steady West breeze blowing across the water kept us refreshed. We shortly entered the ECR before taking right towards Kelambakkam. Driving inside the backwaters we could see lots of birds including herds of pelicans and storks before halting near our usual breakfast stop at Kelambakkam for some yummy masala dosa and idly's. After 2 hours on the saddle our stomachs were letting us know it was it was time for some refueling.

Shortly touching the busy OMR we took an immediate left onto the Vandalur bypass for a few kilometers until we reached a small hill on the right side on top of which the Puthupakkam Aanjaneyar Temple was giving us breathtaking views on the surroundings, including the large IT complex as Sirruseri. We were amazed to see vasts plains of green forest untouched by the unstoppable urbanization all around it. After a short photo session we returned North along a smaller, peaceful road which goes parallel alongside OMR.

We remained lucky that morning with the sun still dimmed by the persistent presence of the clouds. As we passed by the majestic high rise apartments of DLF garden city we took our usual stop near one of the large wells in the nearby paddy fields. Even tough the ground water level was much lower then during earlier months we could still take a refreshing dip before re-entering heavy city traffic again near Shollinganallur. The 5 hour ride outside the city limits was enough to refresh body and soul and return with a rejuvenated mind back into the concrete jungle we call our home...

Excellent Write up from Siddharth:

Inline image 1

It was almost a month long hibernation for me-missed a hell a lot of 5th birthday treks!!!Was very badly waiting for my next trek but each weekend kept passing......and finally it was prem who came to my rescue! It was the Emperor's Express trek IV-din't even feel like calling him up and inquiring about the plan/terrain/team or anything-just registered blindly :)It was a three day trek but that dint stop me from registering-bunking office on a friday for an express trek would probably be the most sensible thing for someone like me :P

Inline image 4

It was a silent thursday morning one day before the trek, and Prem came up with a shocker-'We are leaving tonight':O That meant I had to leave early from office, plus I could not buy a weinbreiner for the trek :( My several attempts at borrowing a shoe had failed the previous night and I couldn't afford going barefoot on a trek with Prem ! So made up my mind-ended up with some brand new local shoe after confirming very many times about the warranty, terms & conditions :) Anand sir sent the prep mail on thursday and thats when I came to know abt the team size-Just 6 of us :O Thanks to a drop out-we were at last reduced to 5 !!! After a real last minute packing, buying food and other items,I reached Rohini theatre, where Prem was waiting - Anand Sir reached in a few mins and we set out to fix his car puncture.'Our Experienced Trekker' Ram Mohan arrived at last and we left for a biriyani dinner, with Prem's words-'This is your last good meal for three days' :P

Picked up Busa at Karanodai and then set out to the foothills.Had a heavy discussion-if we need to skip sleeping and scale the southern peak or sleep over and then follow the south east stream.Busa succesfully brainwashed all of us and made us sleep :P The next morning,we learnt it the hard way-scaling up the southern peak would have been easier than waking up some one like Ram Mohan :P We parked the car at a nearby house and after a long walk, reached the Kailash kona falls, from where the trek would start!!I remember this stretch from my previous South-East trek with emperors and now,the condition was worse-with bottles, plates and glasses floating all round the pool.

 Inline image 7

We climbed up the falls, passed our bags and started hopping along the boulders -the water level along the stream was decent, much more than what I had seen during my last trek .Dipped in at two mini pools there, with one having a mini slide too.Stopped for a bread breakfast by the side of a huge falls like structure-I remember having lunch here during my previous south east trek.It was a huge crowd then and we had a nice time standing beneath the falls, posing for pics and experiencing the pricking, tickling sensation. Now, we were a compact, ready for anything group and we wanted to reach the huts before the sun gets high :)

After breakfast, things became slighly difficult for me-the huge thorns and the undergrowth all along, the loose boulders and several other factors made things tough for me and I started lagging behind, with several huge thorn pricks on my hands. We soon went up the ridge-though a bit hot, this was easier for me than the boulders :) We expected to go to the south-east campsite with huts and then to the origin there, but that dint happen :( Went round the central peak and then Prem took us to the marathon trail-Now Ram was finding it difficult. And we no longer had any stock of water, except for the 2 litre reserve that I was carrying. The sun was literally at the peak of its cruel form and we were getting fast exhausted, like our water reserves :( Little did we know that this was just a preparation for the last day's trek!!!

Meanwhile,Prem and Anand sir got into a bet, which Prem won, though Anand sir claims it was not convincing enough :P Several dry streams later,we finally got into a big stream, which would lead us to Picnic pool, our camping spot for the day. Fortunately, there was some water trickling down a side stream .Though a nearby beehive was scaring us,we decided to stay there and have lunch-rusk with cheese, nutella and tang. A few minutes of rest and we started moving again, after waking up Ram. Slowly, the water level started increasing. And soon, there was a kutti falls with a wonderful pool :) Prem's nasty (A)joke deterred Ram from getting into the pool :P We proceeded along the stream.Prem and Busa moved up quickly and the the rest of us walked slowly, following the stream, moving up the ridge at some points. This stretch was wonderful -abundant shade, comfortable small small boulders and water everywhere :) Soon, picnic pool was in sight.

Anand sir,Busa and Ram started setting up the camp site and I was helping Prem with his crunches :P Ram declared that he wanted to drop out the next day,due to some headache.Everyone had their share of dipping and jumping into the picninc pool-I just lay down flat-relishing the beauty of the place and the day's trek. And finally,I was now at the famous picnic pool-which has been evading me for the past one year :D Tea was served and then they started playing cards....I was the scorer and as usual dint understand even a minute bit of the game :) Ram as usual started sleeping and woke up when dinner was ready-A wonderful dinner of piping hot rice with ghee,Gongura and mango pickle(Courtesy Busa). And thanks to Anand sir for his excellent mixing :) The cards game continued and I retired for the day-we were scheduled to leave early the next day ,so as to escape the dry trail and reach the stream before the sun rises.

The next day-had tea again, followed by a quick breakfast of noodles with pickle- the scheduled early start dint happen and we had to tolerate the heat-no other go!!! A quick, thorny climb of 150m and then some slight ups and downs-Some dense bushes which we had to cross with utmost care & caution, as a bear has been sighted there recently , a small man-made hut like structure and then...finally,we were on the trail!!Encountered some wood cutters on the way and realized we were close to some village and then later understood that this was the exit route which Prem had planned for Ram.It was the eastern exit which we were approaching.Soon we entered the stream-gave away the thrash to Ram,took back the common gear from him ,redistributed everything ,had some well deserved rest and then started offwe were now reduced to four:( And now there was no one to question and torture Prem :PPrem's objective was to scale the eastern peak by EOD :O Enroute,we crossed the 1st pool, central pool and a cool cave like structure. It was decided that we would have our lunch at the sliding pool and then proceed. The sliding pool was yet another new location for me and the view of the magic pool were splendid. After spending some time at the sliding pool,we came up for lunch-the rice was almost ready and we finished off our stock of gongura and some pickle.

 Inline image 16

After lunch,it was a few minutes of walk along the stream and then we had to climb up the ridge- there was a small part of it which was really steep.Prem & Busa climbed up a dry stream pretty easily. After a couple of failed attempts, myself and Anand sir decided to brave the thorns by the side-as both my hands and legs were already damaged comprehensively,I dint have any problem with the thorns :) This stretch was very tiring with several steep climbs and descents- and no water, except for the reserves which we had. Had adequate rest and proceeded-soon,reached the 300m falls.Water flow was scanty but sufficient-had to make a couple of trips up & down to collect water and firewood for cooking, drinking, washing vessels and then for the morning chores. They started playing cards and I slept off.Dinner was soup with Pasta and some left-over pickle. We retired for the day on one nearby dry stream-the '2 days-past full' moon was shining gloriously and I was shivering with cold-dint feel like spreading out my sleeping bag though. All three of us except Prem were tired but our minds were eagerly waiting for the next day's trek-which Prem had promised would be a trek of a lifetime :) And personally for me,many of my must visit places-the pools of the east and then the Tada top would have been visited and checked off in style :)

The next day, woke up early morning and discovered that all of us had ended up with some trouble in the tummy-probably the previous day's pasta or the near-stagnant water !! Though this was discouraging,we dint allow this to deter us-Had our oatmeal breakfast there, filled our bottles and left for the day- We were in search of an ancient British jeep trail which would lead us to Tada top. Thankfully, Prem evaded a 200m climb up which we were all dreading :)As expected, there wasn't any water point all along the way and the trail too was non-existent. The heat was picking up and we had to rest often. It all trickled down to the 'Mind Over Body' motto now-I was all exhausted, just dragging along. Our legs needed rest but we knew that rest wasn't affordable now. We had to reach Tada top and get down before it gets dark!!To add to my woes,my shoe had cracked out at the sole and I had the pleasure of feeling the earth with each and every step of mine :)Hot sun, scanty shade,no water , heavy backpacks and exhausation from the two previous days-it couldn't get worse ,but we were loving this :)

 Inline image 17

 Inline image 18

 Inline image 19

Soon the jeep trail came in sight and we picked up speed-We had some pretty good 20+ Kms ahead of us!!!! As this was supposed to be a bear infested area,we decided to stay and trek as a group!!!Emptied the available nutella packets at some point on the way and Prem promised to show us water in some another one and a half hours. At one point,we decided to move down towards the stream as we dint want to risk staying water-less till we reach Tada Top.This was in fact the best decision of the day -the Stream was super cool-a climb down and not so exhausting :)Though it was dry initially,we soon encountered water-stagnant at first and then moving :) After someone sighted bear foorprints, droppings and broken tree branches,we started walking extra careful. And we realized the real use of Anand sir's voice-loud enough to frighten away any kind of bear, leopard,Elephant or any other wildlife which you would hope to encounter in a forest :P.This stretch was shady and fun to walk along. And not to forget the experience-several steep vertical climb downs and bag passings and some beautiful streams and pools-The arch pool, leaf pool, deep pool and several places visited by very few CTC teams :)

Soon,we reached Tada top-had some cool soothing time in a not so deep pool, emptied our tang and rasna supplies, clicked some pics and then left-We will now have to climb down to the base of Tada and then exit through Varadhaiya Palayam!! Prem warned us that this climb down to the base was a bit dangerous with steep vertical drops at several points and also because he had sighted pythons there in his last trip !!And one more reason -there has been a bee attack previously in one of the spots with vertical drops !!!! Thrilled , anxious and eager,we rushed down-My shoes had worn out completely and I was grappling for some grip with each and every step- really slowed down ,but that dint matter,as it was almost the end of the trek, except for the two climb downs which prem had mentioned about !!We could now hear the noise of the human civilisation down from the falls-it was a mixed feeling now!!!Happy on almost having completed a wonderful trek and sad on thinking about how our lives would take a drastic turn back towards normalcy from the day after :(The climb downs were done with utmost care and safety, though we managed to do it without ropes. Thanks to Prem,Busa for guiding me!!!

 Inline image 20

 Inline image 21

After this, there wasn't much of a worry for us-we now had to face troubles of a different kind.Bottles, broken, shattered and abundant were present everywhere,in fact in each and every step :( And there were plenty of other things to complain about-disposable plates, glasses, polythene covers, cloths and left over food items!!! Imagine-a pristine forest with crystal clear water and proof of wildlife just above us and down the hill,we human monkeys are spoiling everything!!!!It was almost the same case at our entry point too-Kailash Kona falls!!!Probably this is what access of irresponsible humans to nature results in!!! Such access is indeed nature's bane :(

Soon we had to meddle with share auto drivers and local goons to get back to TP Kota, where our car was parked-we probably loved the wild independence of the forest more than this 'so called civilization'!!!

Had dinner, reached home and slept-woke up with pain in the limbs for the next 2-3 days, but was loving it-Felt good in fact !!!56 KM in rough ,hostile terrain under high temperature with partial availability of water-Made up for my 1 month hibernation and gave me the confidence to take up many more difficult missions in the future :) Thanks team for the wonderful trek :)

And above all, completed 1 year with CTC on April 1st,a few hours after this trek-it has been a wonderful one year!!!!Thanks everyone :)

Monsoon Trek In Western Ghats – Life Is Calling!

Shola forests at Kabinnale forest
Quick we disappeared into the thick jungle even before the sun could rise for the day. The chill breeze, the thundering waters gushing in the river, the trees dancing to the tunes of the heavy wind indicating the perfect season to do a monsoon trek. We were all set to explore this pristine forests of Western Ghats were the rains don’t end, were the clouds rub your shoulders, were the grasslands befall your trail, were the mighty natural beauty greet the tiny humanity-
After negotiating with the bushes and thorns we made our initial hike crossing the stream, penetrating into the thick woods, soon to be lost in the thick and sloppy ridges of the Western Ghats forests grasslands. It was a pleasure walking on the ridges on-looking the beautiful streams unfold as waterfalls. That astonishingly beautiful and breathe taking sight and the breeze to which I was part of, tickled my senses and made me realise – “if there is something called as beauty, it has to shy away admiring this forest, if there is something called as delight it has to get some glee from this forest, if there is something called as life, it has to know what it really means after traversing through this creation. The grass, the flowers, the leaves, the roots, the droplets, the tiny insects and even the shade of that little lovely flower had life flourishing here”.
Durai in Kabinale forest - waterfalls
The encounter’s I had during my trek inside this pristine forest has given sleepless nights and dreams about the ‘life’ which emanates from this forest. The fresh water direct from the sky, the magically clouds engulfing the entire forests and peaks, the smell of the lemon grass, the mammoth peaks piercing sky, the spanking fresh grasslands – how will I ever mind the little leech sucking my blood when I am lost in the beauty of nature, when my mind is filled with unbound glitter, when I am not able to differentiate the forest and me. It’s a feeling of not being close to nature but being part and parcel with nature. A unique experience and my words fall short to describe it.
Lonely Tree at Kabinale forest

A delightful Encounter above the Clouds:
The non-stop hike through the ridges took us to some of the magnificent peaks while the bone chilling breeze ripping us apart it was a sense of absolute ecstasy. The wind-blown peaks and the incessant rains I loved them both for they made me realise how my mind and soul was badly craving for this occasion. The open grasslands, the beautiful mountain humps surrounding me, the milky clouds swallowing the green valley, the supernatural fog emanating from the thick woods of Shola forest, the soothing drizzles making me feel alive, the melody of the birds mesmerising my soul. The honest portion of my heart prayed to shed my body here to fly with the clouds and sing with the birds forever.

Durai - Onlooking Kabinale forest
A Bone-Chilling Night Deep Inside the Shola Forests:
Never did I realise that it was time to break for the day all I kept doing was referred as ‘trekking’ but to my mind I was in a state of complete ‘ecstasy’, if I was to define a word for that state of mind. The thin sun light which managed to enter into the forest slowly faded giving its way for the thundering clouds and the heavy down pour, soon we realised that camping near in the open grasslands or near the peak will be quite challenging. Quickly we rapped our bags and moved into the dense Shola forests, the thick woods became our tents to guard us from the rain, wind and the thunders. The whole night I was listening to the thunders, the different sounds emanating from the trees, insects and the birds. I loved them all to the extent that I had few leeches sticking to my body; probably they too loved me the way I liked the forest.
Kabinale forest - Sholas
All the beauty in this world will admire you, all the freshness in this planet will cherish you, all the life in the universe will respect you, all the mountains in the globe would love you, all the grasslands in the earth will envy you, and all the clouds in this cosmos would long to visit you. You are the soul and source of life’s existence. You are the incredible Western Ghat forest.
Kabinale forest clouds
Trekking through Donigal green route:
Cutting across the thick jungles of the Western Ghats from Sakleshphur to Kukke is the green route railway track trekking. We were on the best time of the year to trek in this place with the misty clouds engulfing the tracks and the swollen river roaring on the side. Tunnels, tracks, rain, thick forests, river, peaks, breath taking views and greenery my mind was busy allowing all these spectacular views to sink inside me. The most delightful part of this trek was the waterfalls gushing from the mountain and dropping on the track. I am simply awe-struck with the chill bathe in that refreshing water.
Donigale railway track and waterfalls -Durai
My soul was desperately crying to shed its body and become part of this forest – unlucky I am to be back in this lifeless city – Life is calling!!

Chennai Triathlon, July 13th, Event summary

$

0
Last Saturday, 108 members participated in our Triathlon, the 6th edition since its inception in September 2012. This time we raised the bar by introducing the 3/4 Iron distance - the toughest so far. Currently there is no International recognized Ironman Triathlon event organized in India and only 6 Indians (residing in India) have completed this iron challenge abroad. Till now, 44 CTCians completed the Half Iron distance (organized trice) and 3 finished the 3/4 Iron distance this time. Our target is to organize one Full Iron distance Triathlon by the end of this year and one more 3/4th before that. How many CTCians will successfully complete the iron challenge and claim the title among the very few in India?

This time we have 5 levels - the entry level categories Enticer/Sprint, the mid level Olympic and the high end Half and 3/4 Iron. Participants ranged from 11 to 61 years young with a respectable representation from the female gender - 12 in total beating their male counter parts in average timing!

The entry level Enticer drew the largest group of 48 members with an average time of 2 hours 28 min to complete. The second level Sprint had 28 participants and needed 3 hours and 7 min for the average Triathlete to finish. The mid-level Olympic had 18 contenders with an average time of 4 hours and 52 min. Only 9 were remaining for the tough Half Iron distance which took them 9 hours 52 min to successfully complete. And finally the deadly 3/4 Iron had only 3 members successfully complete with an average time of 14 hours 47min.

The Triathlon started at the Anna swimming pool @ Marina beach at 5:30am for the higher levels (Olympic, Half and 3/4 iron) and 6:30am for the entry levels (Enticer, Sprint). Swimming distance to complete was from 300m Enticer all the way till 2.9km for the 3/4 Iron Tri.

After completing the swimming section the participants immediately proceeded by cycle from Marina to Adyar to OMR taking U-turns at various distances corresponding to their level. The Enticer directly peddled to the running venue at Neelankarai to cover their 15km cycling distance while the 3/4 Iron Triathletes had to go till Kalpakkam and back to finish their required 135km.

The final stage of the Triathlon consisted of a run along a 1km loop in Neelankarai. Enticers got away with 2 loops while the 3/4 Iron Triathletes had to cover 31 loops to receive their medal. Totally 108 members ran through the finishing line and took raised to the podium alongside the 110 members from our last March Triathlon.

Participants who successfully completed the Triathlon received a beautiful medal to recognize their memorable accomplishment.

Participation headcount

Average swim/cycle/run timings across the 5 levels

The registration desk was buzzing on Saturday early morning with volunteers and participants filling up timing sheets, distributing BIBs, settling accounts, signing disclaimers, checking out cycles, clicking photos, taking interviews and distributing activities among themselves.
Vallab, CTC's resident Ortho and Sports consultant ensured that all muscles required for the Triathlon were sufficiently stretched and warmed up to avoid injuries.

The event finally kicked off in the Olympic sized swimming pool where the participants had to cover 50m lapses to cover the required distance for their Triathlon level.
Lane separators provided safety and a means for novice swimmers to take a break in between

CREDITS

Before we head on further, I must halt and thank the 30+ volunteers who made this Triathlon possible - amazing energy, unlimited selflessness in supporting the participants with refreshments, timings, punctures, cramps, food, photos and mental support during their endurance race.

A BIG THANKS to our sponsor TI Cycles/Montra who supplied 100 hybrid cycles for the Triathlon reducing the logistics for the participants to get their own cycle

Valla, Ortho and Sports professional, director from the Physio Academy of Sports, has been supporting CTC's sports events since last year's October Marathon. He ensure once again that the Triathletes were in good hands upon completion of the race.

One of the key organizers behind every CTC sports and awareness event is Prabhakar - untiring volunteer who works silently behind the scenes and ensures all logistics are in place to have a successful event. You can build houses on this man's shoulders!

Equally broad-shouldered volunteer cum organizer is Saba - another core member in the organizing team of CTC's non-stop events throughout the year whether it's Trek Polamaa, marathon, triathlons, workshops or Coastal Cleanup. Saba is there to make sure all pieces of the puzzle are in place to make it happen every time!

Covering every major CTC event through her lens, Nivya prepped and headed a dedicated group of photographers to ensure the spirit or the cause of this Triathlon and many past CTC events are captured digitally and shared with the online world and ever present for generations to come.

This man needs no introduction - from printing t-shirts, setting up the stages, creative out of the box ideas, designing banners and posters, causing sleepless nights to other volunteers - no job is too big for Gokul, a steady presence in our volunteering team.

Special credit to Yazar - creative head - who patiently designed, redesigned and tuned medals, logos, posters for this event until the organizing team was satisfied. Every wonderful event needs a wonderful event design.

A BIG thanks to Raj Jacob the volunteer lead for the cycle section of our Triathlon managing 100+ sponsored cycles, cycling route & refreshments, disclaimers, U-turns, check points and more.

Sankar is taking his cap off - how am I gonna manage 108 swimmers in the pool, count thousands of lapses and note down 200+ timings? God only knows how but he and his team of volunteers pulled it off successfully.

Vishal's ever-presence was felt everywhere - during the swim, cycle and run sections of our Triathlon - the magnitude of this selfless heart is in no comparison to his physical height.

Triathlon anchor Bhavadharani and the videographer Hassan followed the participants along their way from the pool to the cycle route and the running venue. Few could escape from the mic and the questions that would unveil the emotions and action behind the Triathlon.

Arun Kuttapam & Vasanth did an excellent job as usual in assisting cyclists with punctures and mechanical issues.
Jayanthan was my right hand in the days before the event getting all supplies ready on time

ENTICER - WOMEN

10 ladies participated in our Enticer completing a 300m swim, 15km cycling and 2km run in an average of 2 hours 16 min below the average time of their male counter parts!

Divya Vivek (E047) finished first in 1 hour 12min
Radha Kumar (E004) came in second in 1 hour 38min
Lakshmi SK (E012) came in third at 1 hour 40 min

Below chart shows the minimum, average and maximum timings for the swim/cycle/run sections (not necessarily accomplished by the same individual). It allows participants to compare to their individual timings and see how they are performing on the three disciplines compared to the others.

Overall and individual timings for the 10 women Enticers -

ENTICER - MEN

Vidhan Bhaiya came in first in the Men Enticers in just over 1 hour, well below the average of 2 hours and 24 min set by the 38 male participants in this category.

Inspiration example in our July Triathlon was set by P.Chandramohan (E018), 61 years young and finishing 18th at 1 hour 48min in the Enticer category.

Below the min/avg/max timings across all men Enticers - can be compared with the individual timings to get an overall idea on where each one stands and whether improvement/focus is required on either swimming, cycling or running in future practice sessions.

Ranking of the 38 men Enticers - first completed in 1 hour 1 min, last one finished at 3 hours 53 min!

SPRINT

Our Sprint category received 29 participants, including 28 men and 1 lady. Average time to complete 750m swimming, 20km cycling and 5km running was just above 3 hours.
Skanda Adiga (S014) came in first at 1 hour 56 minutes!

Special mention goes to our youngest Triathlete Aditya Sharma at 11 years and the only female Sprint Triathlete - his sister - Nandini Sharma
They were standing on the podium long before their dad Anil Sharma would finish his 3/4 Iron distance Triathlon (see further below)

Our Chennai Triathlon welcome three participants from Bangalore who participated and finished as one team. Hopefully they will carry the spirit of the Triathlon back to Bangalore and get it kick started over there.

Min/avg/max timings for our 29 Sprint Triathletes - to be used as reference against the individual timings to see which of the three disciplines requires practice to improve

Individual ranking -

OLYMPIC

Scaling up one level we come to the Olympic category which involves 1.5km swimming, 40km cycling (U-turn at OMR/Navaloor) and 10km of running. Average among the 18 participants was 4 hours 52 minutes.
First to finish was Subramanian Narayanan (O-015) at 3 hours 52 min, 1 hour below the average.

Special mention goes to Aashrita, regular participants in our Triathlon series and only female participant at our Olympic level finishing at 4 hours 28min below the male average!
Her dad is proudly looking from behind the scenes!

Another inspirational example was set by Kabbir - 53 years young - who finished his endurance in 5 hours 29 min. He proved that age is no bar for being an Olympic Triathlete

Here goes Duraisamy, aged 52, regular on my difficult treks over many years coming in a respectable 9th position in this Olympic challenge. How do all you youngsters feel sitting on your lazy butts looking at this senior Olympic Triathlete?

Min/avg/max timings for our 19 Olympic Triathletes - key reference chart to compare the individual timings for our participants:

Individual timings:

HALF IRON

Stepping up one level to the Half Iron distance Triathlon the pyramid gets smaller with only 9 participants completing 1.9km swim, 90 cycling (U-turn near Mahabs) and 21.5km run.
Average time clocked was 9 hours and 52 min. The first finisher was Dhiraj Taneja who came in at 7 hours 44 min.

Special mention goes to Ravikumar - one of the most active members in our Chennai Triathlon FB group regularly sharing his practice session and inspiring others.

Min/avg/max reference timings for the Half Iron -

Individual timings:

3/4 IRON

Stepping up to the highest level, the iron content goes further up - these are not regular men - these are our 3/4 Iron Triathletes. You are looking at men here who can be counted on two hands in the whole of India!
These men of steel finished a grueling 2.9km swim, 135km cycling and 31.5K run non-stop from early morning till late evening. Average time taken is 12 hours and 47min.
Marathoners go bleak compared to these guys!

Out of the 13 who registered only 3 made it to the finishing line:

Raghul (T001) came in first at 11 hours 49 min
Followed (T003) by Anil Sharma at 12 hours 33 min

Followed third by Emperor Ponnuraj at 13 hours 59 min.

A BIG HAND to these iron men who stand alone in the whole of India!

Individual timings:

Once again thanks to all our volunteers who made this 6th edition of our Triathlon possible!

Hope to see all of you on our 7th Triathlon in the next few months - time to start practicing NOW no matter whether you are targeting entry (Enticer, Sprint), mid (Olympic) or experienced (Half, 3/4 Iron) level!

"Happiness is pushing your limits and watching them back down."

After successfully completing Olympic triathlon, Oct 12 , Nagala Half Ironman triathlon, Nov12 and  the Half Ironman in Feb 13, I was desperately waiting for announcement of Full Ironman from CTC. Peter,Founder CTC was however wise to raise the bar slowly and steadily as the aim was not for few individual success stories , but to create wider opportunity for many participants.
When the information of triathlon event came from CTC on 02 Apr 13, without thinking again I registered myself for ¾ Iron man while for Aditya and Nandini we registered a little later for Sprint category. This was to be sure of their swimming capability before registering (Thanks to Manoj Pandian who helped Aditya to adopt to correct swimming style). I knew that CTC team are flexible for changing category.

Preparation
I had an issue with my left leg Quad from a YMCA republic run. This problem started getting settled thanks to training camp organized by Radha Krishnaswamy. After Feb 2013 triathlon event there was not many practice session for swimming. We had some training session with our friends Shankar Patel, Chandramohan, Satish,Andy and Manoj Pandian, but didn’t cross 500Mtr mark in those sessions. Cycling practice was at its worst since we couldn’t plan long cycling sessions. But I made sure to keep my body fitness up with running work outs
In the beginning of June 2013 it became clear that without serious and committed preparation nothing will move. I somehow convinced my wife on high fitness demand and the need to be out daily at 0400hrs. First time in my married life I started instructing on type of food I need, otherwise I never would dare breaching into that Kitchen area. So it started with one-time pulses in food and compulsory meal maker mix. Stuck to our vegetarianism and never felt that some special diet plan or meat is required to compete in these events.
Preparation started on way with 10x10 programs, I am die hard admirer of this program 10x10 as it puts our fitness level straight on track. After finishing the 2nd set of 10x10 I participated for triathlon on next day.
A Big preparation setback came from the news that SDAT Velachery stopped entry of guest in pool, other pools were insufficient for practice.  This pushed me into budget planning to fund for membership of SDAT, as usual kids money bank and wife secret fund was handy and took a family membership of pool on 29th June. Confidence flowed after doing 2-3 session of 1 KM and final session of 2k brought smiles back. This was the point when I was sure of completing of 3/4 Ironman triathlon.

 Event Day
The event day planning started with challenge of logistics. How to reach 3 bodies and 3 cycles to marina by start. We decided to leave early and cycle. Our home is 20+KM from Marina and we kept the pace in
control in view of the larger event. Time tragedy struck as in all homes with Kids, we finally left home at 05:00 AM. I knew that we can’t make it to pool before 0545hrs. Since we were to start swimming as soon as we reach, so couldn’t afford to get exhausted with cycling. I told kids lets go slowly whatever time it takes.

On reaching pool I was VIP as VIP always arrive late, Saba ( CTC) saw me, first question “why are you so late” and simultaneously all work of signing of declaration and issue of BIB started immediately, somebody ( Might be Sreyansh sorry forgot name ) escorted me to my lane, there also Rajasekar asked “hey Anil Sir why late.. Come on jump”, other side I was welcome by Shyam with claps, I didn’t note the timing clearly but it was around 0550hrs when I started the event and touched the water. In all hassle left kids to the care of CTC volunteers.

Swimming
Although the practice sessions boosted confidence in 2.9 KM swim I had cramps five times on the calf. Fortunately all came one by one and in different legs. Technique of stretching in water helped and I got on track. The last one was little heavy and even Nandini noticed that from the outside she wanted to call Vallabh ( Always available for help) I didn’t want to waste any time I told her I can handle this. Stretching trick again helped along with talking to body. My wife’s Jam sandwich was a pleasant bite after swimming. (With our workout needs, they become specialist in nutrition)

"First you feel like dying. Then you feel reborn."

Cycling
Maintained the strategy of steady thrust, took first half cool, and allowed body to warm from the stiffness of swim. All the support point was well equipped with energy material Gatorade/sneaker bar/Banana / Sandwich and special to mention smiling faces welcoming updating the status/position in race how far further to go and all information.) Meet Ravi kumar at Mahabalipuram refreshing point, as usual he wanted some good clicks J, Had little problem at u turn at Kalpakkam, went into DAE colony as could not find volunteer who was to indicate U Turn, on return did some pacing in spite of scorching humid heat of 12 o’clock on OMR. ECR stretch was little better with some shade, but OMR is totally bald on shade, was enjoying expression of people standing on bus stand on the way “they might be saying – who are these cracks what we call in Tamil loose – doing cycling in this heat” some of the kids was waving bye, bye signs which I was returning back as much I could do. Second Booster had another jam sandwich near Siruseri as I knew during cycling only these can be digested, can’t eat anything during running. Also had to save energy for another challenge of 31Km running.

Before reaching Neelankarai turning I called Peter for identifying right turn, to the surprise immediately Prabakar and Peter came as escort to direct me to correct turn “ wao what a VIP treatment” people were ready to hold bike as I arrived, somebody is taking by back pack, somebody coming with energy drinks, saying thanks will be too little for all this efforts and let me added further this is not only for me it was for almost everybody.

Running

With the slow and steady strategy, I did six loops with Ravi/Raghul/ Gunna. We walked for a while to get strength back, short chats. Raghul was facing severe cramps.Sri Ganesh and Satish and Punnraj Arunachalam arrived after cycling. Sri Ganesh was in pain because of cramp and mental pain of converting ¾ to half due to cycling issue. With each round completion there were cheers from dedicated volunteers feeding us with energy, line of photographers to capture all happy moments.
Around four o’clock when I called home to give them update (btw it’s necessary to update on regular intervals to make sure that I get dinner and a broad smile on way back. ”) I was told that they are coming to witness my finish. This gave required for hard finish, Aditya accompanied for last three KMs, whole running was a mix of run/walk, but last 400 mtr I flew like Husain bolt to finish line..
Medal ceremony was superb and simple with Peter handing over Finisher Medal and Neem plant to spread green message, followed by super tasty cheese sandwich.

“ It is far better to be exhausted from success than to be rested from failure.”

Learning’s :-
1. Slow and steady is the mantra to through these grueling events.
2. Best part to eat is during cycling.
3. Plan your race follow with training plan, if it doesn’t work out well don’t lose your heart your previous training and learning still help.
4. Please check your cycle before maintain correct tyre pressure, if you are hiring a cycle hire it two days before get it fine tune with mechanic check for oil and chain tension.
5. For events of Olympic and above good maintained cycle is must.
6. We can complete event with only gear bike is totally a myth, Gear cycle surely helps but not a must, Punraj completed his ¾ Ironman on non gear, very ill maintained cycle, I completed my Nagala Half iron man on Non gear 10Kg heavy Avon MTB. Sri Ganesh missed his ¾ due to maintenance of cycle, Its legs which pushes cycle and not other way round.
7. Always try to reach venue well before start time of event.
8. If we have not practiced well none of the energy drink will help.
9. Stick to your healthy diet plan, Junk food like Deep fried is not so bad occasionally, mind to minus that with decent work out next day. ( I am a fan of Samosa and Cholla Bhatura).
10. We are not professional “ sorry if I am offending anybody at least I am not “ we took to physical activities to our enjoyment let’s not bound it with anything, it’s for enjoyment and lets enjoy it,

Sincere Thanks to CTC for organizing such a wonderful event and providing a platform to test our physical and mental strength, without selfless and dedicated efforts of these volunteers’ events can’t be a success,  These volunteers were braving the heat waiting for participants to arrive, I will miss a lot if I don’t mention Vallab ortho’s support, his team was on work right from starting of the event at 0530 to the last 2000hrs, He was available with his family and kid of less than a years of age. Hats off to the support from Vallab

Feb 28 around 8.50 pm,I just entered Chennai central railway station to take part in a journey, again it was Emperor's organised by Prem, since i was new to this team ,usually i involved in tree plantation and Prem welcomed me and the only known face to me isjagadeesh who came to hand over tickets since he had dropped at last minute due to some reason, then it was bit of confusion since the names in which ticket were booked had some changes, and some of us have to remember the dummy names, my name was in the list and premtold to show the i/d to TT, at 9.15 the train started its journey and we were still in confusion of our dummy names,
whileHari was memorizing the name allotted to him to his adjust end side TT was preparing the chart he never bothered us and busy on his work finally after long verification TT  was satisfied the wayraghuram clarified his dough ts and collected his additional charges as per govt norms.

Then its was time for our Dinner,Prem have bought both veg and non veg biriyani from well known Dinudukal Thalapikatti ( original trade mark ) we all ate in same coupe as same Emperors style after this, we were just in chat for a while and eagerly waiting for arrival of next station to purchase of coke or pepsi to quench our thirst but till 2.00 am we can't able to get any thing and we put all our back packs in one of allotted berth and then i slept, hari was in opposite portion,

at about 5.30 am the train was nearing kovai and prem told next 45 min's we will reach M.palayam and commanded us to get refreshed in train itself since our next halt would be at night.

around 5.30 or even last one strange thing happened it was archana cycle which got break failed while driving down hill and she fell down this made us a set back in our journey, young girls full of joyful face was caught into trouble and karthee and his team took her to near by hospital thanks to hari who had noticed her in such a long distance we decided to return back but two of our cyclist have almost reached it seams so prem decided to go to the end place for them since it almost dark ans not a safer place for them, while we are on the we found three to four bysons blocked our way and again we are getting late to go to end and return back,

shobana, vidthya  and i preferred walking in that place, walking alone beside the tea estate is really as equal as  walking in heaven ( i don't know how heaven will be) then around 2.30 we reached the kodanad view point and spent a few minute's there, here we met one off STF personnel who encouraged us and recommend us to go for trek in that place.

It was sometime in March that my participation in this year’s edition
of Treasure Hunt as part of Prem’s Emperors-3 team was confirmed. When
I announced this news proudly to my wife, I wasn’t anyway expecting
her to share the same excitement as me however this time she was
unhappy for one more reason that I would be away from home for the
Tamil New Year. I told her I would do my best to finish the treasure
hunt soon and be back early on Sunday to join the festivities at home.
Obviously, at that point in time, I said this just to console my wife
with no inkling whatsoever of what Prem was up to this time - i.e. to
win the Treasure Hunt in 1 day!

Having been part of a couple of treks organized by Prem previously and
seen the demanding nature it, I was anyway expecting this competition
to be even more challenging on body and mind. So started preparing
myself by increased the pace and duration of my workouts at Gym.
However, this time during our phone conversations, Prem kept repeating
our team’s goal of winning in a day and how important it was to train
hard on a daily basis. He even recommended to us to join Express
Trek-4 to improve our endurance levels; a few of my fellow team
members joined but I could not due to some personal constraints.
However what surprised me was Prem’s constant reminding on fitness and
preparation this time which seemed very unusual; this was something he
had not done in the run-up to our previous treks and this made me
wonder whether my preparation was really sufficient. I also
participated in the Map reading / navigation hands-on workshop that
Peter held at his home in April as this time, some TH points were
allotted for quizzes.

As the D-day drew close, Prem called up and informed us that we would
be starting from Chennai the previous evening (12

th April) itself and camp for the night at the Nagala South East Dam.
The idea was to give ourselves sufficient sleep and rest and avoid a
potentially weary early morning journey on the big day.

As planned, we all met up at Koyambedu on Friday evening. I was a bit
late in reaching; Nitin and Varaprasad were even more delayed than me.
So others (Senthil, Raja, Arun and Ashok) started proceeding towards
Nagala in another car leaving behind Prem to wait for us. In the
meantime, I and Prem did some last minute shopping (batteries, wire
cutters, etc.).  Finally Nitin and Varaprasad arrived and we started
driving towards Nagala. At around 9 PM, we caught up with the rest of
the team at Uthukottai and stopped for dinner. Prem was particular
that we don’t eat too much or too heavy foods lest we spoil our
tummies - so, we were strictly asked to eat only 2-3 idlies each.
Fortunately, the restaurant had run out of idlies - so we were allowed
largesse of 1-2 dosas each ☺. Can’t say we ate to our heart or rather
stomach’s content nevertheless the dinner was definitely satisfying.
Stocking some additional supplies (water can, etc.), we left
Uthukottai and reached Nagala South East dam by around 10 PM. We
quickly unpacked our sleeping bags / tarpaulins and prepared to retire
for the night. Senthil and Ashok spent a couple of hours more
pondering over the various printouts of Nagala map, probably
discussing on optimal routes, strategies, etc. I did not get sleep
until late past midnight - so was just lying down observing the serene
surroundings occasionally disturbed by sounds of dogs barking at
something. At a distance, the mighty South peak could be seen standing
tall above the clouds, redirecting the steady stream of moist air
blowing over its peak into forming a thick trail of cloud cover over
the western fringe of Nagala range. All around, it was a wonderful
display by Nature and it was a marvellous treat to watch. Didn’t know
when sleep overcame me however soon it was dawn break and early lights
were visible on the horizon.Treasure Hunt was supposed to be flagged
off from the village nearby the dam only. We wanted to reach the
village early and be on time, so we hurriedly completed the morning
formalities and started packing up. Prem instructed us to keep our
backpacks as light as possible. So, non-essentials such as sleeping
bags, tarpaulins, change dresses, bowl/spoons, etc. were all tossed
back in to the cars. Prem personally inspected our backpacks to make
sure no unwanted items were carried along - even Varaprasad’s
sunglasses were not spared. Some energizing / hydrating food items
were distributed amongst us (1 each of raisin packet, lemon, orange,
apple, snickers chocolate, tang / electrol). All that we packed as
proper food were a few packets of bread accompanied by some Jam and a
Nutella bottle. Even this didn’t last too long - we finished a part of
this food supply for breakfast itself even before starting the
treasure hunt. Being summer season, Prem was extremely thoughtful to
get each of us a white towel to wrap around our heads and protect
ourselves from the hot sun rays. This added to our style quotient as
well by giving us a differentiated bandit-like looks.

After some bit of circling around, we finally reached the designated
gathering point in the village. By then, other teams had also arrived.
The final quiz was conducted on site by the organizers. I, Senthil and
Varaprasad took this quiz for our team. There was a posse of camera
crew from Moon TV who were covering this event. They were also
planning to follow one of the teams into the forest. I was wondering
how they would keep up pace considering their heavy and delicate
equipment. Organizers were busy completing the preparatory activities
and getting ready to start the competition.

In the meantime, Prem worked up a frenzy among us - soon, all of us
were overcome with a “Do or Die” attitude and were raring to go. We
got ourselves drenched in the nearby village pump and gave out a war
cry - “innaike mudippom - ella, intha kattulaye saavom!” (which
roughly translates to “Will finish today or die in the forest!“ - some
of us probably said this more out of realization of our dwindling
stock of food supply ☺). The whole atmosphere at that site was super
charged and even other team members were very animated and running
around. It rubbed off even on the villagers who were watching the
entire commotion initially with amusement but now with more
intensity. Finally, the hunt was about to be flagged off. Each team had
to randomly choose their first clue. Senthil pulled out the clue for
our team and we got Clue #4 - series. Peter then took some group
photos and finally flagged off the hunt at around 8:30 AM. Immediately
the teams started racing each other to reach the base of the hills
quickly.

The fast paced walk towards the base of the hills seemed pretty long
and Prem kept pushing us with his usual motivational talk interlaced
and the occasional warnings and threats of the difficulties that lay
ahead. Just before starting the climb uphill, we took a short
diversion to take a dip in the stream - with this, the last of the
morning formalities (i.e. taking bath) for the day was complete.

As is expected of this part of the hill, the initial ascent was very
steep and I could see everybody getting very exhausted. The relatively
younger / fitter legs kept plodding along relentlessly but I started
gasping for breath and started falling behind a bit. I started
doubting my preparations and even thought for a moment whether I was
wise enough to participate in this competition at 36. However I
dismissed this thought almost immediately and instead reflected on
taglines such as ‘mind over body’. Prem and Senthil who were trailing
us allowed the intermittent 1 minute breaks that helped us recharge
quickly and regain our top game. Soon, my confidence returned and was
no longer lagging behind (believe the initial exhaustion was just a
passé to be blamed on some kind of starting trouble).

Senthil and Prem were navigating with the GPS and were giving us
directions. We are initially following the village trail but soon had
to go off the trail to reorient ourselves towards the location of the
first clue. After trekking for about an hour, we started closing in on
the clue location which appeared to be below a steep rocky slope. We
carefully descended down the slope, zeroed in on the target and
started searching for the clue all around the place. Soon the “eureka”
moment happened and the clue (4a) was found much to our delight - we
celebrated the by roaring out loud and posed for a couple of
photographs to register the achievement.

After the excitement subsided, we started planning the route for the
second clue. From GPS, it seemed about 6-7 Km away. The time was just
past 10 AM now, so we discussed that we should aim to reach it before
noon. We picked up pace and soon reached a plateau on which stood the
well-known transit hut. We were running low on water, so we took a
diversion from here and reached the nearby water point. Like animals
converging around waterhole, we gathered around - water was tricking
down a bamboo stick - we took turns and drank to our satisfaction,
splashed some on to our faces / bodies and finally filled our water
bottles as well. The whole exercise lasted for about 15 minutes - this
was a very welcome break which charged up instantaneously and we
walked back to the hut. From here, we proceeded towards the direction
of the second clue.

To add to my difficulties, my shoe started giving way - the sole of my
shoe presumably having lost its adhesive, started dangling out from
the bottom. Further trekking only aggravated this but I continued
trekking with it itself partly because the sandals I had as backup
won’t give me the same level of grip as the shoe and partly because I
didn’t want to slow down the group trying to experiment with some
other fixes. We were able to follow a village trail most of the time
and soon reached the 2nd clue location just before noon. We found the clue (4b) hidden in a
tree and again our shouts of joy knew no bounds.

After posing for the customary photographs, we started focusing our
attention on planning the route for the 3rd clue. Prem referred to GPS

and announced that the third clue wasaround 7-8 Km away and we should aim to reach there by 2 PM.  We had
to again pass by the hut in the plateau where we took a short break
and munched on some bread with jam and chocolate spread. I found some
worn out threads at this site and used it to temporarily secure my
shoe soles (even this didn’t last long though). In the meantime, there
was a discussion on whether to take a detour again for the water
point. We estimated the amount of water left which amounted to around
6L - we thought this should help us scrape through. So, we decided to
skip the trip to water point to save time; instead water was to be
judiciously rationed from hereon. It was around 12:45 pm when we
resumed our trek towards the 3

rd clue. We continued following a village trail but soon it was time
to take a diversion and go off-trail. Our clue was still a good 3-4 Km
away on a nearby ridge. This was one of the most difficult stretches
for us - the hot sun beating down on us, water reserves dwindling and
added to that there was no trail. We just had to wade through thick
shrubs and occasional thorny bushes unmindful of the bruises in the
excitement to get to the final clue. We went down a valley and climbed
over a slope and finally reached the top of a ridge on which stood a
dry tree. As per our GPS, this was the location of the final clue. We
looked around and found the clue perched on top of one of the branches
of the tree. Nitin climbed precariously on to the dry branch and
brought down the clue (4c) amidst the howling of fellow trekkers.
That’s it! We now had the location of the treasure on our hands! And
we couldn’t wait to lay our hands on the treasure itself!

We took the customary group photo displaying the clue while Prem and
Senthil tried working out the location of the treasure point in GPS.
We had to trek back through the same path we came from, reach the
village trail and then get on to the stream to reach the treasure
point. It was past 2:30 pm and we were running slightly behind our
target time - so we couldn’t even stop to enjoy the stunning panoramic
views of the nearby villages from the top. We wetted our lips with
whatever little water was left and bit into the lemons and oranges. On
the way back we saw some villagers who were finishing their day’s work
and loading up the cut branches over their heads. We checked if they
had some water left to spare but no luck. Our throats were dry and we
were feeling very exhausted from thirst but still continued with good
pace in the hope of reaching the stream soon. After an hour or so, the
trail split with one steep path presumably leading down to the stream.
We went down that trail and soon reached the stream. It was a huge
relief to see such a large pool of water and we immediately quenched
our thirst and drenched ourselves in the flowing water.  Prem was now
single-mindedly focused only on reaching the treasure soon - so he
continued almost immediately without waiting for us. I and Arun were
the last ones to pull ourselves out of water. We hurriedly followed
but Prem and rest of the group were moving ahead very fast and quickly
outpaced us. My damaged shoes added to my struggle particularly when
climbing the nearby ridges. However we followed briskly with the rest
of the group just an eye-sight distance away. Soon we could see the
falls at a distance and Peter and rest of the organizing team were
standing at the top of the falls giving us an eager reception.

It was around 4 PM when we all climbed on top of the falls; the GPS
locked this site as the location of the treasure - Bingo! There we
were on the brink of realizing our dream! Prem, Raja and Senthil got
very animated and were briskly swarming around in different directions
trying to find the treasure. A few minutes went by but still no trace
of the treasure. So, Prem and Raja slid down the falls into the pool
and were scouring its dark waters but still there was no sign of the
treasure. The rest of us climbed down the rocks on to the pool and
joined in the search. Very soon, the treasure was located 8 feet below
the water in the dark pool and it was pulled out much to our howling
and celebration of joy! The treasure consisted of 8 red bull cans and
we popped them open right in the pool to celebrate and taste our
victory. All along, the crew from Moon TV were busy recording and the
organizing team were clicking away some very memorable snaps of our
celebrations!

It took us some time for the achievement to sink in and our
celebrations to subside. But slowly other bodily realizations such as
hunger, exhaustion, pain from bruises/rashes also were being felt. We
all settled down around the small pool above the falls where the
organizing team as well as the TV crew were camping. We took a dip in
the pool and were sharing the experiences with the organizing team
members who had actually planted these clues the previous week. The
organizing team had cooked meal-maker curry and white rice for lunch,
some of which were left over and we happily dug into it.

It was late evening now and the light was starting to fade - we were
contemplating whether to return back today itself or stay put with the
organizing team in the camp site for the night. The organizing team
(possibly worried about having to part a share of their dinner with 8
more hungry souls ☺) were urging us to go back or at least go to the
village and buy some food. Raja, Nitin and Varaprasad were very
adamant that we stay put for the night while Prem, Senthil and I
suggested that we return tonight. After taking stock of the situation,
Prem and Senthil announced that we will camp there for the night.Peter
announced that he was going on a casual evening trek over the
surrounding ridges - Nitin and Varaprasad still had enough energy left
that they joined this trek while rest of us huddled around the pool
and indulged in gossiping. It was soon dark and the camp site was now
glittering with the illuminating displays put up by the fireflies.
Peter and rest of the group also came back soon after. The organizing
team were very magnanimous enough to provide us some rations of
ready-made chapattis / curry that we started cooking for our dinner.
They even let us dig into the piping hot noodles that they prepared
for themselves. All the while, Senthil was busy narrating his
exaggerated and scary forest tales with the TV crew who already seemed
petrified with every little noise coming from the surroundings.

It was past 9 PM and it was time to retire for the night. We trekked
about 200m upstream to reach our camp site which was a small clearing
adjacent to the stream - we spread the tarpaulin that Peter gave us
and 11 people (including the 3 TV crew members) huddled into sleep
uncomfortably over the tarpaulin sheet that at best could accommodate
only 6 people. I remained awake almost well past midnight - there was
no space to turn or rollover - even the little sleep I got was very
disturbed. Soon we woke up to the chirping sounds of birds and
gleaming daylight.

After spending an hour or so lazing around and finishing our morning
formalities, we packed up and started to make our way down the stream.
We encountered some of the other TH teams who were rushing past us to
get to their next clues and we wished them luck. We continued further
and reached the Organizer’s camp site - we thanked them for their
hospitality and made our way down to the base of the hills. It was
around 8 AM when we reached the main falls; we climbed down its
vertical face and posed for some final set of photographs before it.
We handed over some of the left-over bread to the old temple priest at
the falls and walked back to the village. We got into our cars,
changed to cleaner clothes and started driving back to Chennai. On the
way, we stopped by Pandian Restaurant at Koyambedu for a sumptuous
meal. After lunch, it was time to get back to our daily routine - we
bid each other farewell - I reached home by around 2 PM on Sunday.

I take this opportunity to thank all my team members - Prem, Senthil,
Raja, Ashok, Arun, Nitin and Varaprasad. It was great camaraderie all
around guys and I enjoyed the moments spent poking fun at each other.
It was a privilege to be a part of this winning team and be able to
observe first-hand the way Prem meticulously planned and executed the
strategies and the calculated chances he took that almost always
worked out to our advantage. Right from choosing the apt team (each
with a specific often unstated purpose), prior focus on fitness
training (by pushing us into express treks), conducting special map
reading sessions at his place, controlling our diet from previous
night onwards, giving us rest by camping at Nagala the previous night,
being ruthless in ensuring a light backpack (to the point that we
didn’t even have change clothes for night ☹) and even getting us towel
to protect from hot sun, Prem was a genuine leader and was ably
supported by Senthil. Also, their extraordinary knowledge about Nagala
- such as the terrain, various village trails, water points etc. is a
deadly combination that would be hard to beat any day.Looking back, I
consider myself extremely lucky to be part of all this. Actually, I
was not originally intending to participate in this competition but
ended up being part of Prem’s team purely by destiny. It was only
during my later interactions with other fellow trekkers that I
realized how much prized and competitive it was to bag a spot in
Prem’s team. It was exactly a year before that I started my first trek
with CTC (on the eve of Tamil New Year 2012) and I am pleased that the
first anniversary culminated for me with such notable achievement. I
am deeply grateful to CTC and its Organizers for helping me live my
dreams!

Thank You!

As the D-day drew close, Prem called up and informed us that we would
be starting from Chennai the previous evening (12th April) itself and camp for the night at the Nagala South East Dam.

Prem personally inspected our backpacks to make

outpaced us.

am deeply grateful to CTC and its Organizers for helping me live my
dreams!

Thank You!

THE HIDDEN PARADISE
For two months, Poonkathirvelan and myself have been into discussion about an official CTC Biking , and that too starting from Chennai instead of using Lorries or transport vehicles . As we consider Bike as brilliant mode of transport , why need Heavy trucks for transport ?
Soon we thought of Megamalai , which is not known to many people , though it’s a known rapture for bikers . I have been to this place with Peter when I joined CTC ,explored almost all estates and villages , beautiful ridges ,Periyar and Megamalai reserve . Kathir has also been to this place with his Black Destrier last year , so we had fixed the place and dates . Ofcourse it was a quick ,express trip as many office goers were in the list . Although our inner heart wants to explore more , the outer world succumbs us to office pressure. We had around 60+ registrations , shortlisted 20 bikers and pillions , photographers . It was indeed a great team , as each and everyone had previous experience with long distance endurance riding . We had clearly elucidated the fact that it is going to be highway riding till Theni , then we will explore the Hidden Paradise.
Inline image 1
We had Venkat and Guna ji mentoring us , driving a car for supporting us all the way throughout the trip . They had reached Friday evening near Salem . Our route was different from the normal Theni route , we planned to stop at Salem , camp near Kathir’s house , as all the food and camping arrangements were made in advance over there . And from there we headed towards Dindigul – Theni – Megamalai . It was Friday evening , and suddenly I got a call from Embassy to get stamped on my official documents , so I had to hurry as I was leading the team . As Kathir was leading in front from the first meeting point (Tambaram Railway station ), I finished my work quickly and started towards the check point . It was raining heavily and all my things were drenched . I had asked Ajay to get spare helmets and Sleeping mats for the Team . We both met the team around 7:00 pm instead of 6:00pm due to heavy rain and traffic . The bikers were heading towards Perungalatur , I shifted to Kathir’s bike , chucked the extra mats near the toll gate , and started sweeping .
We had asked Arun(Doctor) to lead and Krishna to sweep along with us , as our first target was Salem , our role was to take care of the safety of the team and push the riding team . We were switching back and forth to check the head count  and team energy . We had asked to assemble after crossing three toll points to have dinner . So all 14 bikers from Chennai assembled at a hotel after Tindivanam , had nice food . Dr.Arun took extra care to bring Chappati rolls and gave it to the team . He truly displayed the spirit of a team player and lead . Ofcourse it was seen while he is riding his Yamaha FZ also. We had settled our advance accounts with few people and quickly started heading towards Salem . After few hours of ride , we came across few cycles hanging outside a 9717 Fortuner and soon we overtook that car and stopped to see PETER who was heading his team of cyclists towards Yercaud hills . Kathir invited Peter to his home which was near Yercaud hills and Peter was happy to see a new campsite . Kathir ‘s place is surrounded by Shevaroy range which is a perfect place to camp at night . Soon we kidnapped Peter’s team and headed towards Salem , cutting NH7 ,20 km ahead near Athanur Post was our first camping spot . Guna and Venkat sir were waiting to welcome us and Kathir’s parents welcomed everyone. The village was quite flabbergasted to see the number of bikes ,cycles and Fortuner the beast.
It was around 3:00 am in the morning , and we exchanged stories , had tea and asked everyone to have a nap as long ride was waiting to burn our asses next day . Soon Peter’s team shifted with their camping gears to the terrace , had a nice sleep (I suppose ). Our team members opened their sleeping bags , kept their gears outside and started to sleep . Venkat sir , Thiru , Guna ji ,Alex and myself had a chat and took our bikes to have a early morning ride to drink tea . We went to a nearby bakery , had tea , spoke for a while and soon it was 6:00 am. Time was flying!! Around 7:00 am , Peter woke up , tied his cycles over the top and back of the car and started heading towards Yercaud. Our guys woke up, packed things and started from Kathir’s place aroung 8:00 am. We refilled our tanks near Rasipuram diversion and started riding towards Dindigul .

Inline image 2
We had breakfast near Cauvery dam . With a little dip and nice breakfast , people were laughing and sharing smiles . Amarnatth as usual had two-three bread packets and jam box in his hand and was eating ,eating ,eating!!! We had Chips , Bread , Jam and started riding .

Inline image 3

Soon Rajavel’s chain sprocket became loose , so we fixed it and started riding . The team was jam packed with energy and enthusiasm . The Dindigul- Karur stretch was the most amazing part of the ride as the wind was so heavy to blow our bikes away. Most of the bikers were maintaining their average speed around 90km/hr in this stretch and were in totally aerodynamic position , bending towards the tank and pillion doing the same cutting the wind and riding . Few riders were experimenting their body position by sidelining , bending back , totally inline with the vehicle and it was cool to see people non-stop riding even through gushy winds and heavy rains . We reached Dindigul around afternoon and Surya and Devi joined from there .
Near Dindigul Junction , the team was having Nongu and Panagal, drinking and drinking !!

Inline image 4

Soon we started towards Theni . I was shocked to see Amarnath completing 15 Nongu at a single go . Surya’s bullet was making toubles , so we planned to stop his bike at Batlagundu . I was in the car along with Guna settling accounts .  After parking Surya’s vehicle ,we headed to a place near Theni to have lunch and everyone had meals , filled their tummies and was sleepy .

Inline image 5

Having a  refreshing Beeda and Banana , and the thought of the weather , rejuvenated everyone’s mind and Bike as well . So , Bikers fuelled their machines and headed towards Megamalai . While nearing the checkpost , we noticed grapes garden , tomato garden .

Inline image 6

It was such a beauty and was made in an organised manner . Everyone wanted to taste the real juice of the grape , so quickly spoke with the workers and had the taste of it . It was about to rain and we crossed the checkpost . We clearly told all the bikers that from the Checkpost the roads are not at all present , it will be fully offroading , so bewareeeeeee J
We started riding up hill and the temperature started to drop . Mists started to come , it was foggy and drizzling .  A perfect weather for a hardcore biker! After  riding 40+ km we got a  panoramic view of the village and it started raining. It was full off-roading and there was a riding challenge going on between Vijay Gopi and Kathir . Both were riding at 60km/hr at those roads as if they were having a dirt bike race . Both stopped nearby a dam and waited for us, we had a quick snap . Everyone were jumping and posing for the camera. Soon we reached Megamalai Estate , and it was a real heaven. Literally NO WORDS TO EXPRESS ! Scorching sun , humid climate , heavy winds filled with dust in the city and such a change over in this place . A serene , lush green and pleasant landscape was in front our eyes . It was around 5:00 pm and we started having tea near Mathaa canteen . We had to find a nice camping site , so Guna and myself went in car to High Wavys , to see the IP House . Guna drove the car like a professional all terrain vehicle rider with such a great steering control . It was so foggy that we couldn’t even spot what is in front of us . We were driving slowly and it took 35 min to reach the village at night. We spoke with the guys near the High Wavys Canteen , and they had given a teacher’s number to contact , who was not in town . We had brought Food for Briyani and whatever happens we wanted to cook that all night even it rains . So we were looking for firewood. There was a lone , haunted house filled with mist . Dogs barked , winds were blowing , sudden drizzles , Dark skies , I stepped down from the car and moved towards the house  . Ssshhhhhhhhhh! Suddenly one dog ran away , Phew !! I saw a bunch of dry firewood laying down outside of the house . But our priority was camping site , so soon we went to the guest house , and spoke with the guy . But we weren’t interested in the guest house type room , so he told us to go back and camp at the place where we had tea as he was his brother . So we started heading Back. It was freezing cold and the car had a cozy interior maintaining a nice temperature to warm our bodies!
Inline image 7

Once we reached back , we saw people settled near the tea shop itself . Thanks to Kathir, Suresh and Venkat sir for arranging the same . Though we also had planned of the same place , it was all set . So next up was BRIYANI . The Maatha Canteen Thaatha was so kind to provide utensils, firewood and kitchen to cook . Guna ji, our cooking lead , Briyani specialist was planning to make both Veg and Non-Veg briyani for 35 members . For the first time , we cooked Briyani for 35 members in a huge Vessel. Volunteers lined up cutting vegetables , Soaking meal maker , frying onions , soaking rice , keeping masala packets aside ! Till 11:30 pmwe were cooking and it was made with care so that everyone fill their stomach to continue their ride tomorrow. Arun helped with mixing , amaranth with fire and Guna mentoring everyone . Suresh , Murali , Rajavel and co helped in cutting the vegetables. At 00:00 am we had an awesome briyani and went to sleep in the adjacent room which was provided by the Tea shop guy. It was damn cold and even a little bit opening in the entrance door made people shiver and bite their teeth . Everyone were well equipped with their jackets, ,mats and sleeping bags.

Inline image 8

The next day morning , Venkat sir , Kathir and Suresh cleaned up the room . Though they needed help from volunteers ,they led in front and made the room look neat and tidy . Everyone had their morning tea and a warm-up ride along the village . After assembling and packing things up , we headed towards Mannalar and Vennier estates . There umpteen number of waterfalls along the way and was a perfect off-roading ride .
Inline image 9

I was taking videos and photographs of riders enjoying the chill weather , enigmatic ride along with breath taking views .
Ofcourse it was filled with mist :P . We were heading towards Mannalar Lake and realized that Thiru and Vijay had missed the team somehow . They had gone for earlymorning photo shoot of the village . We tried to contact them but could not reach as the signals were weak . We proceeded towards the estate , Kathir had a chill dip in the lake and came out freezing and shivering . Again started the ride . Crossed dams ,waterfalls , bumps , corners , bends , tea shops , lakes , ridges , estates ……. Riding , riding , riding .

Inline image 10

We stopped at a lake for a dip and soon everyone dived ! The people were real crazy , as it was raining heavily and freezing cold , still people loved to dive in the chill lake .

Inline image 11

After the final dip , we headed back to the Megamalai Tea estate where we met Thiru and Vijay who were documenting the estates . They were quite sad to miss the team although was happy on the other side to have a nice , pleasant photo shoot of the place which every photographer would love to have J
Soon we packed things ,settled accounts , had tea again , started heading towards Theni around afternoon . While returning , I was staggered to see the views of Palani-Kodaikanal range and Cumbum Valley, It was such a beauty . I was taking a nice video of those ranges which was stretching all the way till Dindigul line . After reaching Dindigul , we settled the accounts , reimbursed the excess amount and asked the team about the route . Few were interested in going via Trichy , so I had asked Chandru to lead the team going to Trichy and we 6 biker along with Pillions were heading via Salem Route , as we had to pick up Karthikeyan’s bullet .
The team spilt and were headed towards home . Dindigul- Karur stretch was again more action-packed as everyone were maintaining average speed of 110 km/hr . Dr.Arun ,Kathir , Ajay , Krishna ,Thiru and Kumaravel  were riding constantly till Salem and it was awesome to see all those bikers with riding gears , cutting through the winds and moving along with it.

Inline image 12

For a moment , I thought I was in some movie chasing a guy with a team of bikers !!  We filled in Petrol near Karur and reached Kathir’s place where hot mushroom fry and chilly chicken was ready. Guna was welcoming us J as usual  with his swift leading in front .
After having snacks, immediately we started towards Dinner point . We had a nice sumptuous dinner at nearby Mess and started proceeding towards Chennai . The 6 riders + Guna ji in car , were moving swiftly and crossed tolls . Until 3:00 am we were riding non-stop . We wanted to have a power nap as 2-4 am is a crucial time for riders , we immediately spread on tarp near an arch situated along the highway and everyone slept on it . Exactly after 30 min , Sindhu woke all of us ,and everyone started riding again . Dr. Arun and Kumaravel went in front as they had emergency office work . Guna ji had to be in Chennai at 6:00 am so he was driving his car , swiftly cutting , moving ahead of all heavy vehicles leading in front . Once we reached Guduvanchery , there was heavy number of vehicles , generating smoke and triggering the dust particles from the road . Lorries , Lorries ,Lorries ! After crossing the hectic route , we reached Tambaram at 6:00 am . Soon Guna ji switched onto R15 and rapidly headed towards attending his interesting classes :P . Krishna with his R15 was sweeping sincerely and did a great ride . Without the moral support of Gunaji and Venkat sir , this bike trip would not have been possible and the organiser.

Inline image 13

We got messages and calls from all bikers that everyone had reached ,and soon we reached our homes at 7:30 am filled with memories , dreams  and adventures !!!It was a blissful 1200 km ride ,with an awesome team of hardcore bikers who completed it in a two day express style DREAM ! DISCOVER! EXPLORE!

MY GREEN JOURNEY WITH CTC………
By mid 2012………..
Me: Arivazhagan please do not plan this weekend to your home town, since we have to rush up with Netherlands’ parts…..
Arivu : What chezhiyan? Continuously for 3 weeks I have missed my trekking activities….
Me: What trekking??? Where??
Arivu: I’m member of “Chennai trekking club” & we use  go for treks on weekends……
Me: Super! Which are the places? And how about the team!
Arivu: nagala,tada etc………..
This how I came to know about CTC aka CHENNAI TREKKING CLUB! Immediately I registered, and finally I was invited for a plantation drive on 26.08.2012 at SMK COLLEGE OF ENGG. This was my first activity in glorious journey.
The first person who invited us was SABA at tidal park, even though it was slightly showering on that day I enjoyed planting after long time…
The second drive was at Kattupakkam organized by Sridhar and Bhagat. and only known person from the previous Plantation Drive was Siddharth.

Every week end I use to take part in plantation drives, it was in Madha institute of technology one Gentle man welcomed me with a smiling face, and he was none other that our Manager SIVA…..

WALK OF A LIFE TIME- Emperor’s 50th Trek
First I was not short listed for this journey and later on I received a call from Jagadeesh that I have been selected for trip and enjoyed my first trip with THE EMPERORS!

While rushing to SRM Bus terminious one great person rang me up & enquired the time of arrival! He is none other than MASU.Aravindh introduced me to this Great Gentle man.

From the start till the end of the trip it’s really enjoyable and will remember for my life time. Then it was plantation drive with Malan and selva at pondy and after completing the cycle trip with Emperors’ Prem we started again………
Collaboration with TN Forest Dept…..
In order to reduce the overload for Organizers’ in the plantation drives, like procuring saplings, tree guard, and other things, I first went to TN horticulture department for seeking assistance and to take part with them in ongoing projects, their one Assistant Officer Mr.Navaneetha kannan diverted me to approach Tamilnadu forest department.
In feb 2013 MR.IRULANDI  IFS helped me by providing DFO Sounderrajan sir details and told to approach him for any assistance for plantation drives in urban region, and he was the first person from TN Forest Dept to invite all our members to his office and appreciate our activities
And also supported us in the initial phase of Kanchi plantation even though it was out of his scope.
KANCHI – AYYANGARKULAM.
In the month of March, I was sent by Masu on behalf of our team to view the location at Ayyangarkulam. The place was some what isolated and none other than PALM tree, while discussing with village people they urged me to sign the papers which were submitting to EO. Just signed thinking our team in mind that we would turn dry place to greenish…. After a week, we started initial plantation which was the most tiring tree plantation drive in LGOOO history.
After two periodic visits, in the third visit I was surprised to see the pipe line connections made around the lake to water the saplings and almost all saplings were in good condition.

JE ulaganathan made his words true!
Though I visited most no of times to ayyangarkulam can’t able to take part in 1st annuvasery drive which was on sat’day….. I’m very sorry for that!
YERANGADU ARBORETUM
In the month of Nov 2012, the news was published in Hindu Stating Scientific Arboretum Flourishes…………. After a long chase I got the contact details of this and we planned to visit, the place where all kinds of tree were planted and maintained with care. Though it was a nice to see those species of trees in one place but it’s our duty to grow in and around our city for next generation, so those who have missed please visit this place at least once.
Tree Census
A month back we collaborated with Prof.Narasimhan who started tree census program first time in our country and for this we also started the desk work. This program is time consuming but at the end we can just say the tree conditions in our city.
I just started  as a basic volunteer into this group, in the course of a year got so many links and who have same care and approach to nature, so I thank this group which had given me an opportunity to take part in all activities of plantation drive.
MANY THANKS TO OUR FOUNDER, Gentleman PETER.

MANY MANY THANKS TO ALL CTC FRIENDS.
And…..
I also thank
Mr.Navaneetha Kannan, Assistant Director TN Horticulture training centre – who diverted me to Forest department
MR.IRULANDI  IFS TN FD ,who gave me the Chennai DFO Details and linked with Sounderrajan Sir,
Mr. Sounderrajan Sir DFO ,who invited our team to his office and extended his support during his period till he was in Chennai region,
Mr. Ramakrishnan Sir , who gave us permission to visit Scientific Arboretum- We are first team to visit that place as a social group
Mr. Manoj – In charge of Y.A , who helped us visiting arboretum but also provided the guide of that place.
Mr. Oppili – Reporter -The Hindu; who publishes the environment based news, also gave idea to visit arboretum and kindly gave me all replies reg the news which he publishes.
Prof.Narasimhan: the key person for a tree census program and also given list of avenue tree which suits Chennai soils for our future plantation.
and all others who supported ……………..

My Humble Request…
Born and brought up in Chennai city, I have experienced the Cruelty caused to Mother Nature. It was early 1990 when Bislery bottle came in and people bought for a change! Then Aquafina and lot more are in, Now its mandatory for all to take bottled water, the condition before 30-35 years is completely vanished now, we are paying to get our own resourses. No OXSOFINA  nor OXILLARY should be there in place for our next generation, No one should go to super market or other places for procuring Oxygen Bottles,
The battle to win is not so difficult its just…….
Lets Grow Our Own Oxygen……………………….:)
“The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning, but taking part; the essential thing in life is not conquering but fighting well.” –
Pierre de Coubertin, founder of modern Olympic Games.
Again I’m recollecting my favorite lines ………..
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

- Subhashiny

The fun and the memories as follow from few fellow ladies (writers :P)
Write up from Minu:
Well.. I am not much of a writer but will try to convey whatever is in my mind..
Jul 23 - Received an email from Subhashiny Devendiran with the subject "[Chennai Trekking Club] LaDiEs aNd LadIeS aGaiN - II - 10th August 2013".. As soon as I saw this email in ma mobile, I registered immediately without worrying about asking permission from anyone (Well.. I am married and need to ask prior permission from ma husband :-D).. After registering I told my husband tat I will be going for a trek organized by Subha from CTC. He was a bit worried abt sending me for the trek since I had sprained my foot in my construction site a month back and was asked to keep my leg in an elevated position for one whole month. Since
I didn’t go back with my decision, he decided to help me to pick up my gear for the day. In the meanwhile, I was not certain whether my registration was complete from my mobile. So, I re-registered from ma laptop.

On Jul 27, I received a call from Subha. The first question she asked was whether
I was soooooooooo damn interested that I had registered twice!! "OF COURSE YEAH" was the answer to me but I just told her that I was not certain whether I had registered correctly the first time. I volunteered to bring a car if needed since I loved to drive and Subha ensured that she will keep it in her mind and keep me posted about the travel. I was also informed by her that I will be receiving a preparatory email for the trek. Received the prep email on Jul 29 with whatever one needs to know regarding treks and how to prepare them.
Pre-trek, I had to prepare myself mentally and physically. As everyone knows, trekking is totally different from taking long walks in beaches r parks. It needs more of stamina, will power and endurance. My fitness level was bad after my foot sprain. Too much time being idle. I had to get back my stamina and endurance. I started going for swimming, jogging and yoga. It had good results.

Girls.. give it a try and you will start loving it!! I had to choose between my Quechua and Woodlands shoes to keep my leg safe from getting twisted again. Both of them are great shoes but I went on with Quechua since they covered my ankle. Very comfortable and light weight as well!!
Aug 9: I was picked as one of the coordinators for the trek. My task was to coordinate with the girls who got up in CMBT. Before calling them, I called up Vignesh to confirm on our transportation and the time of arrival. He told me that our plan is to leave CMBT before 5:30 AM. The following things were in my backpack. After speaking with him, I started calling one by one from my landline to the girls in my list. Each and everyone I spoke with were very enthusiastic and positive that they will make it to the trek for sure. I was 100% confident that there wasn’t going to be any dropouts in our pickup point. At around 6PM, I received a call from Archana saying that she will also be joining in CMBT and also wanted to know where she can get a swimming tube in tnagar. After doing a small research and calling up a shop, I called her back and gave the info. All of us were asked to assemble by 4:40 AM the next day.
My husband had agreed to drop me in front of Nathan’s Café in the morning. We kept the alarm and dozed. I started having dreams about forests, streams and waterfalls already.. Was definitely feeling very excited to meet all the gals and ladies..

On the day of the trek, I got a call from Malar at 4:13 AM saying tat she has started from Ayanavaram in her cab!! I was on my way to take my bath. Went there, had a splash, got ready, waked my husband and started off. At 4:34 AM, got a call from Vasanthi asking whether she wanted to pick me up since she stayed in Vanagaram. I had already started from home and told her that I will meet her there. My husband left the scenario once he was sure that I was comfortable with the gals. Subha arrived in a van and called us in. My excitement was going high. By 5:45 AM, we were starting off for the trek with a bunch of ladies and I was sure that I was gonna make cool friends. I could see all happy and excited faces filled with enthusiasm and warm smiles.

Inline image 7

Before going to Nagalapuram, we stopped over in a road side shop to have breakfast. Since I had heavy dinner last night, I skipped solid food and stuck with juice and energy bar. From the sight of other ladies, I could say tat they had a hearty breakfast. Shoot!! I missed it .. Abirami, the girl who sitting right next to me in the van offered to bring in a parcel but I said I will manage. Thank you very much grl.. You were a gr8 companion. Subha who was sitting to left side is a bubbly and simple girl who doesn’t like the routine office work and always looking out to do something different and adventurous. After breakfast and relieving ourself, the ride started again and we were in Nagala West in another half an hour. An old lady blocked our way to collect money for parking our vans inside. Well.. That is called local development!!

Inline image 3
After getting down from the van to start our treks, each of us were given a disclaimer form to sign first. Of course we are responsible for our own safety and nobody can help us if we were about to do something which we are not supposed to do. Keeping tat in mind, signed the form and gave it back to them. Subha and the others started distributing chocolates, chapattis and juices for us to carry in our backpacks. After keeping everything inside, we lined up to start the trek. Vignesh aka Vicky lead the way along with Nagul for us to follow. You can Vicky the Barbarian since he was trekking without shoes and with such ease!! Man.. are you even for real??? Subha, Cimbu and Yoga were right behind us. We were informed that two more men will join us soon.

Inline image 4

The trail was plain in the beginning filled with red soil and pebbles here and there. As we moved on, we could see that we were walking on more pebbles. Then we could see a small stream which we crossed over and took a small break to give introductions about each one of us. Something likes an ice breaker. The team was filled different age groups and different backgrounds though there many from IT companies. After this short intro and refreshing by the stream, we moved on with the trek. The trail started becoming narrower with trees on one side and the stream on the other side. I was aware that we will be trekking along the stream. This was easy and we reached the first pool which had a small waterfall. What a sight??

Inline image 5

It was as if it was made only for us to enjoy!! We were informed that the pool is 10ft in depth. Everyone started blowing their tubes. The guys were helpful in blowing the tubes for those who couldn’t (that will be almost everyone :-D)..
I went on without a tube since I was not planning to swim to the waterfall. It was fun to watch everyone have fun and to have fun yourself and by doing whatever you want and not a soul to ask why are you doing like this..
After half an hour, we went on to trek to the second pool. More eager to go the second pool this time since we had great fun n the first one. This part was a bit challenging since we had to climb a rock and see to it tat we didn’t hurt our head during that process. Didn’t know that we will be disappointed by a bunch stupid men who were taking oil massage and having fun in their own pathetic way!! I wonder why they want to dirty every place they set their eyes upon .. Poor mother nature. How much is she gonna bear for us?? The organizers didn’t want to disappoint us and told us that we can move on to the third pool and come back to this later. We eagerly said yes and moved on (Yay!!).. As we moved on, we were joined in by Rajanna, Rajavel and Elango.
Oh boy.. little did we know tat this path was gonna be slippery, rocky and filled with caterpillars and thorny bushes.

Definitely not an easy task to walk with big swimming tubes. I could see that most of them managed pretty well even with those. I unfortunately had a slip while climbing a path with rocks and sprained my thumb. Tat was definitely damn painful. But this didn’t stop me to take break. How can I lose it with all the wonderful and cheerful people around encouraging you and telling you that everything is fine?? Well.. I wanted to reach the third pool no matter what and we made it!! Once we reached the top, the view was breathtaking.. the water was crystal clear. The surrounding was soooo damn peaceful. Vicky took a jump from the top for everyone to start and later one by one, everyone started jumping in. Seeing this was more than enough for me. I called Dr. Yoga to check whether anything was wrong with my thumb and he assured me that it was not a fracture. Thank you very much for taking your time an assuring that nothing is wrng .. Having said that I just put on some spray and started watching ppl enjoy them.

In the meantime, we started having chappatis with pickles (lemon and mango). What a meal I say!! Nothing has been tastier than this ever in my life. After having my fill, I started watching ppl having fun again. Abirami and Sheena went on to jump as soon as they finished the meal. After much hesitation, they jumped in. and once in, there was no stopping them in havn fun. Prajakta who was sitting next to me wanted to go in the pool but was afraid bcos the depth. I asked her if she would like to take my tube. She took it and went in. It was fun to see her enjoy as well. I wanted to go in too but restrained myself due to the sprain. Few girls went inside the pool when they jumped in but they were rescued immediately by the co-organizers who were always nearby and knew what to do when something went wrong. After seeing all this, Deepika, who was with me suggested that we cud go the other way round and stay in the shallow waters for some time.

Once we got tubes from other girls, we went on and stayed there for some time. Later, we were joined by Abirami. I was with her for some more time and then we moved on to dry ourselves a bit and get ready to descend.
Vicky had started a fire to cook the chappatis and Gayathiri was the main chef there to make them. Swetha made sure tat whoever wanted to have a chappati had it!! After having chappatis again, we started to descend to reach the second pool. Yet again, we were disappointed to see that the place was not empty and still occupied by those monkeys in the guise of men. Well bad luck again but we continued to move on to the first pool and have some fun b4 finishing the trek. Descending part was not bad since I thought tat it might be very difficult. The girls had fun for another 30 minutes in the first pool and then we started descending to a point for us to take group pics and profile pics.

Inline image 1

We waited for rest of the team to join us. Once everyone were back, had group pics shot and also a small feedback session. The dogs which subha mentioned earlier as terror pieces made their way in and had fun in their own cute way. After it turned dark, we got our torches and started walking towards our van. Many of us dozed off once we started off and the cool night breeze hit our face.
End of the day, the organizers did a great job by stationing themselves in those places which they knew will be difficult for us to make it. They were easily accessible for any kind of help and were very jovial at all times. Got to know more places for trekking from the organizers. Looking forward for more treks like be it one day or two days or three days. A great stress buster indeed!! One wonderful experience which will easily come to my mind when someone asks me what is the most adventurous thing that you have done till date with a group of newly found friends. My sincere thanks to everyone who has made this into a wonderful day with or without their knowledge ..

Write up From Pavithra:

A typical conversation between a give-me-my adrenaline-break girl and her Indian mom:
Mom: How did you get the guts to apply alone??
Me: Ma, don’t freak out!
Mom: What if the organizer is a psycho?
Me: Ma, don’t freak out!
Mom: What if your fellow trekkers threaten you during the journey?
Me: Ma, don’t freak out!
Mom: You are hopeless!!
Me: Ma, I spoke to Subashiny, she is the co-coordinator, a very nice person, very responsible (P.S.. except the hello-you-got-selected conversation I dint talk anything to her until
 Friday :P)
Mom: Give her number to me; just ensure you come back alive!!
Me: Ma, you are the best!!

Next day, when my brother dropped me off at
 4:30am in Guindy:
Brother: It’s like it’s going to rain, what will you guys do then?
Me: I have no idea
Brother: You are hopeless!!

I met Gayathri 1st and posed her the question, “Gayathri, what do we do if it rains?”
Gayathri: What else? We get WET!!
Me and Brother: Oh ya! We get wet!!

With so much of pre-requisites filled, her I was standing in Guindy with Gayathri and checking Nandini’s progress once in a while.. Then came the van, we zipped across the city, escaping the traffic and me anticipating the rain!
Having breakfast in a “tea kadai” was a new experience. When do we get such chances

We proceeded to Nagala and I was flabbergasted at the sight of the mountains, the paths and trees. Man! I have lived a choking life in the city, I could feel my lungs breathe free here.

Inline image 8

Off we proceeded into the wilderness, with Vignesh aka Vicky leading our way. We reached a small 1st stream where we had our introduction sessions, people from diverse fields, but with the same passion – trekking, I was utterly thrilled.

Crossing few rocks, slimy paths and little jumps here and there, we reached the 1st pool.Off people went with their swimming tubes (thanks guys for blowing them!). I could thoroughly see people having a gala time; I was enjoying myself with nature.
We had to go to the 2nd pool and I now knew why we have 4 limbs! I literally used all my limbs to scatter around the boulders, jump, hop and what not! With the occasional comment from Rajanna – “enna ma enga engayo kaal vechi thandura??” I was telling in my mind “mountain climbing la nan enna PhD ah? Free aa vidunga”. The second pool was skipped due to obvious reasons and had to go to the 3rd pool. The trek path became more and more exciting, after climbing a huge slope, I would look back down and pat myself “aha,, sadichita di Pavithra”.
Inline image 9
No words to describe the 3rd pool.. It’s the superlative tense of all good words in English! People went around after a bit of inhibition, I sat on the rocks and was having “ME” time (in which I usually talk to myself – long time since I did that). It was so calming… And buzzzzzzz went the calmness when one friend just had a freaky jump from a rock platform!! OMG, I really skipped a beat. From then on, I was closely watching the particular rock and would signal the guys if someone was on it!!

One self realization I had is (I know this paragraph is going to be mokkai), if I consider the pool to be my problem, and when I fear it, just by sitting outside it, my fear just grew multiple times (like everytime I see a friend attempting a dive), but when I endure the problem that is, when my friends who actually feared the water, but still wanted to get out the fear, they just a had a good time! So it’s better to endure our problems rather than sit with it..

Coming back, it was chapathi time, with the master chef Gayathri and Vicky baking us some hot barbeque chapathis
The return journey was comparatively easy stopping for a short swim in the 1st pool again, and always, Nagul and Rajavel would come behind us, ask an excuse and zip fast ahead of us… people are you walking or just have Tarzan genes??

Inline image 2
At the end of the day, I was all happy and smiles, thanks to CTC for making me love nature again… I understood few things, Subashiny was not a psycho, Vicky was a slipper-less wonder, Nagul and Rajavel were “vaa-ma-minnalu type” and my co-trekkers were just awesome companions making me all the more comfortable!!

Cumbum Valley Exploration

The ‘sincerely yours’ hottest months of the year seem quite dull when it comes to traveling. If I were to recall the last trip or vacation I personally took, it would be in April when I went on a 7-day vacation with my better half. When the trip to Cumbum Valley was announced, it felt like rising from the dead. The promising prospects of exploring the surroundings on two wheels, riding about 1600 kilometers in a span of 3 days, yet another journey amongst the greens, yet another off-beat adventure to explore…factors enough to get me (anyone) high!

Inline image 2

Registered online and signed-up, the 10 of us (6 bikers and 4 pillions), I was eagerly anticipating the weekend succeeding July 13th. The day we were supposed to start with the ride, I had butterflies in my stomach just thinking about the prospect of yet another trip. In fact, so much seemed to be the excitement around that Krishna Teja turned up a day in advance on Jothi’s front door, ready and packed to depart!  However, the one thing I overlooked back then - this would turn out to be yet another bunch of cherished memories.

The riders decided to meet and commence their ride from the Chennai Trade Center on at 9.00 PM on July 13th. Vivek, Madhvi and Vishnu were expected to join from the other corner of the city (Tambaram, OMR); hence the meeting point was agreed upon at Chengalpettu Toll Plaza. However, the bikers commencing from Chennai Trade Center caught up with Vivek and Vishnu at Perangalathur and it was a joy ride thereon. The 6 bikers (Kamal, Krishna, Muthu, Sudeep, Vivek and Vishnu) and 4 pillions (Balaji, Jothi, Kokila and Madhvi) stopped at Chengalpettu Toll Plaza for a quick catch-up and geared up for the ride that was to begin then.

Inline image 3

The ride commenced by around 10.30 PM from Chengalpettu Toll Plaza. A pit-stop/ tea joint/ stretch-zone awaited us at an interval of every 80 kilometers (roughly), while making the ride enjoyable yet comfortable. The order of occurrence of the pit-stops: Gear up at Chengalpettu (10.30 PM) - Bikers’ rest at Villupuram (12.00 AM) - Tea-break at Ulundurpet (2.00 AM) - Power nap at Trichy (4.30 AM) - Breakfast at Manapparai (7.30 AM) - Bikers’ rest at Dindugal (9.00 AM) - Fuel refill at Theni (11.30 AM). With our tummies chilled and bikes filled, it was time to begin the 20-kilometer ascend to the scenic Highwavys (Day 1).

Inline image 4

While at the base of the mountain, we were told that this was the best road we would get to see in the entire ascend. Wondering what’s in store, we started ascending on our 2-wheels. Hairpin bends awaited us in the early stretch, raising the altitude quickly. Furthermore, the paths were filled with potholes and muddy water…often it was a mere trail through which the bikes had to wade through: off-roading it was! Clouds strewn over the streets, the valley deep down the ravine never-endingly green, slight drizzle caressing our faces…it was quite a challenge for the bikers to ride beyond the 2nd gear within 5 kilometers of the ascend. The view however was Heaven; especially for the photographers who clicked away to glory while the bikes advanced inch by inch. 1/4th into the trail, we had a quick stopover for soodu out-from-the-pan vadais and chai. The hot food-n-drink trickled enough warmth in us to continue with the raise.

Inline image 5

At about 12 kilometers from the base, another halt awaited us only to get wet - the water stream. Madhvi and Sudeep got down for a quick ‘dip’ in the ice-freakin’ly-cold water…and lo! Madhvi’s jeans and shoes were all wet in just under a minute (obviously)! We also filled fresh water from the streams; a refreshing drink from the salty H2O that we get to drink daily. Higher up we continued, with the weather becoming only colder and rains only more brutally showering (though it was just a drizzle!)…finally making into the cozy comforts of Highwavys Inn at about 3.00 PM. While Krishna and Vivek (oldies tired from the ride), went in for a quick slumber after the overstuffingly hot lunch savored of sambhar, kaai (unable to figure out till date what kaai), rasam and rice; the 8 other energetic ones went to Senthil Tea Kadai for a quick tea. The tea kadai proved to be another 20-minute ride from Highwavys, letting us experience yet another off-road ride. The tea, undoubtedly, tasted good (seeing as the area is known for tea plantation); a few others called for yet another round, giving way to chitters and chatters until it was dark and time to be back in the rooms.

Day 2 dawned bright and cloudy, and it was the day to unwind for sight-seeing. Starting the day with hot vadais and a breakfast consisting of idlis, chutnies, pongal and tea, our day started with touring the Manalar Dam. A lot of captures found their way into photographers’ lenses: scenic snapshots, solo snapshots (to be the next display pic of course!), biker’s pride (THE bikes), and a few candid ones. After the dam, we passed through the Venniyar Tea Estate to make way into the Eravangalar Dam. It was a pleasant surprise to see the sun phase in and out here; the mild warmth was utmost welcomed. On reaching the dam, two people at the site absconded with Krishna’s bike! It was only when we started wondering if we were to get back the bike that we saw the bike return. Wondering until date, as to what they did with it!

Inline image 7

Our next pause was at the Thekkady-Cumbum viewpoint and oh boy! Was it a beautiful (understatement) sight!! The point provided a view of the ENTIRE valley, giving us an idea of the altitude and depth we were standing at, while at the peak. It was AMAZING - the view from there - valley of the greens, plains at the base, wind on the face, sun in the sky. With tummies starting to growl once more, we made our way back to Senthil’s Tea Kadai for the made-to-order chicken curry and biriyani (ordered earlier that morning). (For the veggies, it was kurma with biriyani.) Yummm!!! The food was WORTH the wait; the cold began dissipating as soon as we had the first morsel. As lunch was devoured almost at supper time, tea was a subsided affair that day. After lunch, the last point we headed to was the Highwavys Dam and Lake. While Jothi and Kamal got in for a dip, the others rested their roasted backs on the comfortably sprawled tarpaulin. Yet another set of click-clicks and as the weather gave way to darkness, and we came back to the rooms.

Day 3 (as most of us dreaded, I’m sure) was to begin the return journey. The morning was greeted with mist and clouds, and the rain cleared through it all by 9.00 AM. Saddles tied, ropes harnessed, bags packed, sleeping bags on the necks, rooms emptied…

Inline image 12

We began to descend by 9.30 AM. 3/4th way down the trail, we were back at the potti kadai where they served soodu out-of-the-pan vadais with tea. Gobbling those up (which also happened to be our breakfast), the next pit-stop was to refuel the tanks at Theni. The journey followed onwards as: Lunch at Dindugal (1.30 PM), Tea at Manapparai (3.00 PM), Snacks at Trichy (5.00 PM), Tea at Ulundurpet (7.00 PM), Dinner at Tindivanam (9.00 PM), onwards (to depart) Home Sweet Home at Chengalpettu Toll Plaza (12.00 PM).

One of the longest yet fun-most rides taken on 2-wheels indeed! Thanks to Kamal and Jothi vel for yet another fabulous trip organized! Cheers!

LGOOO 1st anniversary plantation drive, Kanchipuram ,29th June 2013

This is the story of how a single man's aspirations can bring about a significant, welcome change in the life & lifestyle, attitude, the priorities of the locals at a small, hitherto unknown village near Kanchipuram. This is not about a single day's event but a slow, gradual, enriching evolution. This is an example of how good things can happen when people with noble intentions converge together.

Ayyangarkulam near Kanchipuram, is a  bit different from other Indian villages-there aren't any farmers here. People here work on the famous 'Kanchipuram Silk Sarees'.Some of them venture into nearby towns to work in factories-Agriculture and hence greenery are stories of the forgotten, neglected past here. As expected, the village was giving way for residential plots and engineering colleges on its farmlands and lake beds. But, Mr Ulaganathan,JE din't want to give up so easily. His concern was the ever shrinking expanse of the vast lake behind the Sanjeevi Rayar temple. The lake, Ayyangar kulam, which gave its name to the city was slowly dying out. The feeder channels of the lake were slowly encroached upon and the lake bunds wore a deserted, haunted look, with thorns lying all around, making it an ideal place for anti-social elements. Mr Ulaganathan wanted to do something to increase regular human activity along the lake bunds, to restore worshiping at the temples on both ends of the lake. That’s when he happened to meet a determined group of friends from Facebook , who, unlike others preferred working on the field rather than their Facebook walls. They believe in the constructive use of social networking for establishing contacts. And eventually they roped in their old friends from Chennai Trekking Club who had worked with them on the restoration of a historically significant Chola architectural marvel at Senji. Together ,a plan was drawn to plant over 1000 saplings along the entire stretch of the lake bund. Other organizations like Pasumai Vidiyal were eventually added  to increase the reach.

CTC, having planted more than 1000 saplings in the previous year with a pretty good survival rate were pretty confident of handling this but didn’t want to risk planting 1000 saplings without proper safety measures. As a precaution, 50 saplings were planted on the lake bund and it was mutually agreed that depending on the survival rate of these saplings the rest of the 1000 saplings would be planted in phases. The locals responded well-made arrangements for a bore-well, pipe lines for watering the saplings and put out all possible efforts for protecting the saplings. Solar street lights were installed along the stretch to increase human activity. The saplings in turn grew up very well, getting ready to welcome their siblings.

And the 'Lets Grow our Own Oxygen' team of CTC were all set to celebrate their first year anniversary and kick start their 2nd year activities through this mega event. Fortunately, we had some very kind, helpful officers from forest department to hep us. Inspired by CTC's green activities of the past year, they agreed to provide saplings free of cost-a holistic plan to develop the lake-ecosystem of the area was drawn. A carefully selected mix of saplings-fruit bearing and nesting were picked up to invite more birds into the lake. Pasumai Vidiyal agreed to plant 'vetti-vaer' along the the entire lake bund to structurally enhance its strength. Also, with inspirations from Vedanthangal bird sanctuary,25 'naatu karuvela maram' saplings were planted in the watery areas of the lake to promote bird nesting. Hundreds of seeds were collected to be sown along the bund.

On the day of the plantation event, more than 100 green warriors from across the city, and some from even the neighboring state gathered at the spot. It was wonderful to see newly married couples and families coming to the event.DFO from Kanchipuram was gracious enough to accept the invitation and kickstart the event. The forest guards and the DFO gave a comprehensive demo on the 'how-to's of planting  a sapling and the volunteers were more than eager to start planting.

Teams were formed to enable the process go on seamlessly with minimum dependency:
1)The digging team would make the pits proper and suitable for the saplings. The pits were already dug out using a poclain and this team had to work on each pit, taking into consideration several factors including the height of the sapling.
2)The planting team would carefully remove the cover from the root ball, plant the sapling, cover up the pit and then proceed to the next pit. Care was to be exercised to ensure that saplings of the same variety don't get planted  in adjacent pits.

3)The mulching team would place coconut shells, palm shells and  sugarcane waste around the sapling-this would control the growth of weeds and allow moisture to get retained in the soil near the roots by controlling the quanta of incident sunlight.

4)The thorn cutting team would cut the thorn trees(kaatu karuvela maram) in & around the lake, serving a dual purpose. We needed the thorns for protecting the saplings from cattle and also, these thorn trees are well known for draining the water from all around, from beneath the soil and from the atmosphere, thus affecting all life forms around them.

5)The tree guard team would proceed with erecting tree guards out of the cut thorns-this was a very tedious and important task .

6)The cooking team would proceed to the nearby college to assist  the cook with preparations for our lunch. Also, buttermilk and fresh lemon juice were to be prepared for our volunteers on the field.
7) There was a separate team for tools and support-arranging the tools as and when required and providing water & refreshments to the volunteers.

8)Seed sowing team, which was dedicated to sow 300+ seeds around the lake, on the bunds.
9)A team dedicated to plant karuvela maram saplings inside the lake.
10)Photography team, to capture the moments of the event.

Also, some volunteers picked up the sapling covers and other plastics from the spot in 4 bio-degradable garbage bags.
The teams synced up perfectly and worked together- the volunteers were awesome in spirit and style. Unlike the previous visit, the heat was relatively less. And as always ,we worked, with lots of fun. Cycling, posing for pics and running for snacks-all happened but work was completed on time. Majority of the saplings were planted before lunch .The tired team proceeded to the temple for lunch and some well-deserved rest-and then, back to work again, this time, in the company of rain:) It was like an appreciation mail from a manager after a day's hard work ;)Our volunteers loved this and started dancing in the rain. By 5 pm, the rest of the saplings were planted and tree guards were installed for most of the saplings!!Hats of to all volunteers who worked throughout the day braving the sun & rain.

Now, back at the temple, after group photo sessions, accounts were settled and volunteers were sent back in cars, bikes and vans to their corresponding pickup points. Few of us stayed back to plant the remaining saplings. And again, owing to the climate, there were some tree guards yet to be fixed. We decided to camp at the temple for the night and get back to work early in the morning.

The next day ,it was a pleasant surprise for us. When we went there by around 7 AM in the morning, there were already few villagers standing there, looking at the saplings, picking thorns and making tree guards!!! This moment, of course, made up for all the troubles and hurdles that we had endured in the past-the previous night's mosquito bites were forgotten in a jiffy. From our experience, something which all of  us could agree upon is that creating awareness is tougher than growing trees and we realized, we had just achieved that!!!! We had sown that seed of environmental consciousness/pro-activeness in the minds of the villagers there and that’s what we value more than some petty numbers& stats-the journey is sometimes greater than the destination and we had just felt that!!
Thanks to all our wonderful volunteers who worked on throughout the day with minimal facilities-thanks to Peter for bringing in so many volunteers, for leading from the front and guiding us wherever required-needless to say, people came in as 'volunteers' and left as 'tree-lovers'.We are sure, all these tree lovers would now think twice before axing a tree :)

Some facts & future plans :
1)205 saplings have been planted on Saturday, the 29th of June 2013.There are a few remaining saplings, which the villagers have promised to plant. The total sapling count now stands at 255(including the saplings from the previous drive).
2)With continuous support and patronage from forest department, around 800-1000 saplings can be planted along the lake bund. A suitable mixture of fruits bearing trees/nesting trees will be selected , as always.
3)Some species planted by us - natttu karuvela maram, banyan, peepal, iluppai, iyalvagai, pungai, sorgam, neem, kumzh, magizham, naaval.
4)The only way to thank all our the green warriors(right from the forest department officer who patiently dispatched the saplings for us after attending his own retirement function - his last signature on duty was to provide saplings to us ,to all our volunteers) would be to achieve an excellent survival rate here. We would leave no stone unturned for this. Plans are on to fabricate our own tree guards at one of our volunteer's workshops-more follow up events would be organized for this spot!!!

We are looking forward for support from corporates / individuals to fund these tree guards- reach us at peter.vangeit@gmail.com if you are interested!!

Monsoon Mission in Western Ghats – Life is calling

Right from the start of the journey , it was totally an enthralling experience for an avid nature lover like me . It was Thursday evening , I had to catch my train at 3:30 pm to reach Bangalore . I was collecting my bagpack and GPS from my friend who had wrongly taken my bag in which my Garmin was present. So I had to go to Red hills , collect my bag pack and come to Central station to catch the train. I started at 3:00 pm from Ashok Nagar and every 10 minutes I was getting call from Sankar , Prem and Guna about my whereabouts . I was calm as I was pretty sure I won’t miss the train like last trek to Tirupathi :P . Equipped with 6 sleeping mats and three tarps , I rolled it and put it over my head and exactly 3:26 pm I reached Park station , soon I jumped out of running train with luggage and started running . My phone was constantly ringing , and I was feeling my heart beat . I got into the subway and got out ! Instantly started entering into central gate , all the mats and tarps were blustered away and cut loose . That moment , Phew …. Soon I chucked few mats and a tarp to nearby Pani puri guy , and took whatever was in my hand at that moment and started running . It was 3:33 pm and I was in Platform no.6 and I could notice the train. Sankar ji and Prem were shouting Vishaallllll, Daiiii … Soon I noticed the green flag waving, Prem collected the tarp , sankar ji the mats and started to run . The train was moving , I was running parallel to it and rapidly jumped into D1. Phew…… Heart beat pounding …. The trek has not started yet !!
The Journey
Soon I exchanged greetings with trek participants and noticed Pnagin ji sitting in the corner . It was long time since I trekked with him . I was thinking , this trek would be special for sure . Soon munching the cutlets , vadas , drinking tea , we started playing Cards . Time passed by , as we keep on playing Ace of Spades and Knock Knock . It was interesting and funny to see a huge gang playing cards covering the whole row of train seats .

The Initial 1200 m Ascent – Day 1
Around 10 pm , we caught our bus and distributed food items , checked GPS and informed the bus driver . Early morning we quickly disappeared into the thick forest infested with blood sucking leeches and venomous pit vipers . We did not have proper breakfast as we had to reach the 1200 m peak before noon . It was a very steep ascent , so the team kept up its pace , slowly and constantly climbing up . I was leading along with Sankar ji , Karthik supporting , Prem pushing and motivating everyone and Vipin and Sridhar were sweeping . I was exchanging Agumbe stories with Pnagin ji . After negotiating with the bushes and thorns we made our initial hike skipping the stream , penetrating into the thick woods, soon to be lost in the thick and sloppy ridges of Western ghats .

Inline image 2

Slowly we were crossing each and every contour line in our GPS indicating the altitude . Around 10:30 am we were at 1000 m altitude , 200 m more to climb . I waited for everyone and finished my nature’s call . My tummy was empty and making sounds :P
Soon Guna , Subha and Prem came and started climbing . Prem noticed a snake hiding inside a hole and advised everyone to start ascending . After climbing 1100 m , I had got affected with severe cramps due to lack of food and water . Although I was hydrated enough , I had cramps in my thigh and calf muscle . Then realised , I did not have food the whole day and day before as well . Sankar ji , Jayanthan helped me out  and asked me to rest for a while . It was raining heavily and gusty breeze made it even worse ! So we spread out a tarp and sat for a while until my legs got relaxed. Soon Prem came down to check my status , and helped me out with food and did a superb leg massage .

Inline image 3

I was revitalized and started walking again towards peak . The whole team was waiting for me to start and I was back to normal. Soon we were heading into dense jungle filled with surprises !! Once the mist moved, we got a breath-taking view of where we climbed from, and it was impenetrable Shola grassland that we hiked. I still had the effect of cramp which was soon rejuvenated by Karthik’s Poli and Prem’s Electrol mix . It was then I realised how much I missed the coconut balls for breakfast . Soon we descended along the saddle towards the opposite peak . By afternoon we were on that peak and continued along the never ending ridges.

Inline image 4

Peter had earlier said this point as point of no return .  Thundering rains and Spanking winds made us cross those ridges more interesting . It was the most memorable moment for me !! As I had covered myself with a tarp and were almost gliding along with the wind without much exertion . Soon the tarp flew away :P
So I tied it to my bag and started moving . The winds were smacking to the core . Each and every one in the team were combating against the wind .

Inline image 5

At that moment I realised the true power of nature . Soon we started descending which was gradual and was towards the main stream . After descending 100 m , we were back to thick woods . It was around 4:30 pm and we decided to camp . Soon Sankar ji and Prem crossed the small side stream and checked for a flat space. Luckily we found out a flat space covered by thick grass . While finding the camp site , we noticed a Malabar Pit Viper and Hump Nosed Pitviper lying on a tree and on a rock respectively . That indicated their basking temperatures. We laid three tents quickly and started arranging things for cooking . I had brought 1 kg of camphor for cooking as this time we were sure that we will cook whatever happens !!

Inline image 6

The menu for dinner was soup and Maggi. After setting up the camp site and changing dry fits , we started cooking and started thinking about the gusty winds that literally propelled everyone away from the ridge . Hot soup was on the way . Soon everyone had soup and Maggi and started to find a space to sleep . All sleeping bags and mats were wet ! All outfits were wet ! All tarps were wet ! Almost everything on Western ghats were wet … We ignored everything and started to sleep .
Sankar ji did not have enough space ,so quickly he laid a small tent with his tarp and started to doze. We had a nice 4 hour sleep until everyone started chatting about their trekking stories . The non-stop rains plus the bone chilling breeze ripped us apart . Even though we had three tarps to cover , water was oozing in all directions. Diwakar was having a tough time , sleeping in the corner , almost fully drenched in rain and covered with blood sucking leeches . Subha’s frequent “Oh no! My Sleeping bag is fully wet” was notable. Prem , Saravana , Sridhar ,Subha , Diwakar and myself were discussing about the monsoon winds and rains. It was around 2:15 am , again everyone tried to sleep . Though it was disturbed one.

In love with the Main stream -Day 2

Inline image 7

Morning we woke up around 6:30 am and started making Tea . Everyone had rusk and tea for breakfast and were geared up for the long day ahead. Soon we packed all tarps , bagpacks and took a group snap and started moving towards Main stream . After having discussion with Sankar ji , Pnagin , Sundar and Prem , we decided to go to the main stream and  then finalize about  exiting towards Tea estate or at the start point itself . We had to descend 500 m to reach the main stream and already it was pouring. I was moving along with Sankar and fully loaded with energy as the food and energy bars totally recharged me . I was ready to do a non-stop hike J . We were descending parallel to a dry stream , and noticed a potential camp site which was flat and large . Moving towards the main stream , we kept on descending , walked on animal trails , climbed up and again descended until we reached astonishingly beautiful and breath taking view of the stream far away. Pnagin , Vipin , Sankar and myself recollected memories from MSM 2011 trek of this place where we were removing our leeches ! The team was jumping after seeing the view as it was clear and dry sky . Everyone had their round in taking their profile pictures and quickly we took a group shot . The astounding sight pleased my senses and made me realise that all those adjectives that are synonymous to stunning will be aptly expressed at that moment ! No words to express as everyone were delighted and overjoyed with ecstasy . After all , what you need in life is that moment of happiness under the misty skies along with like-minded souls in the lush green grasslands with thundering rains and gusty winds moving your soul !!

Inline image 8

We crossed that ridge and started descending . I was supporting in front with Sankar ji , Guna and Pnagin . After a 50 m descend and regrouping we had Pickle ,rusk and Dates for a quick food session . These little things that Prem does is what makes the group more energetic . Should take this opportunity to thank Prem ji .

Inline image 9

After finishing the dates, everyone headed towards the stream . We crossed few side streams forming human chains, as the streams were flowing with great vigour and dynamism.

Inline image 11

Walking along the stream , we stopped for a quick lunch of Khakra + Cheese . Everyone had a nice water massage in the main stream . It was around 1:00 pm and it started pouring heavily like MSM 2011. Anyway all the souls were wet throughout , so they were least concerned about rains and winds now . The priority was Pickle+ Cheese . Prem and Guna ji helped in inventing a new food item similar to Half Boil in egg which was Having Cheese and putting pickle over it and swallowing it at one go !! It was idyllic . All our tummies were filled , I suppose ;-) . Around 2:00 pm , we started moving along the main stream , crossing the bamboo trees , thick bushes , sluggish waters , umpteen number of side streams and wet muds . We walked till 5:30 pm and stopped as we got a nice flat space for camping . The majestic Main stream displaying its true supremacy was a visual treat .

Soon Nagin ji finished his tent within minutes , and others were laying down their respective tents . I was shivering and bone chilling breeze made it even worse . After laying down the tents ,Saravana and myself went for bring rock for cooking . Sankarji and Selva went to bring water . Prem was helping this time with cooking as always it was Sankar ji taking the responsibility . Today’s menu was Soup and Masala Oats . The Soup was damn nice !!We experimented Masala Oats for the first time and it was not great , but atleast we got to eat in this roaring weather. Anand , Magesh , Jayanthan ,Subha and Sankar were talking about their two day experience in Western ghats . As usual these stories make us more and more delighted . Everyone went back to their tents after finishing their dinner . It was yet another rough night for Diwakar ji as he took responsibility in taking the corner position and did not sleep throughout the night as it was raining heavily and water was coming into the tent. Saravana’s dry sleeping bag which he did not use it in first day was a reliever , and it made us both sleep for 6 hours . The warmth it  provided made us fresh and energetic in the morning .

The terrific exit - Day 3
Around 6:30 pm , I woke up and the smell of tea in the morning was alluring . Quickly Sankar ji , gave me tea and I checked my GPS and packed all things . Sankar ji told me that we are going to exit somewhere near start point , so we need to climb the ridge ,walk across it and descend. Though it was simple to say , we had to cross several side streams gushing with force , climb the thorn filled ridges , move along thick vegetation cover and descend along slippery rocks. We kept on walking , soon the main stream was taking a left and we encountered a jeep track . So we followed the jeep track till where it lead us to as it was moving parallel to stream .

Inline image 12

We crossed few more streams , refreshed ourselves and halted just few kilometres before check point . We decided to deviate from here as in to climb the ridge to reach near the start point . While climbing , Guna ji noticed the Green Vine snake exhibiting its white and black markings . The green vine snake is diurnal and mildly venomous. The reptile normally feeds on frogs and lizards using its binocular vision to hunt. They are slow moving, relying on camouflaging as a vine in foliage. The snake expands its body when disturbed to show a black and white scale marking. Also, they may open their mouth in threat display and point their head in the direction of the perceived threat. I was simply awe-struck with the sheer beauty of the snake .

Inline image 13

Soon , they started climbing up . I was taking a few snaps and noticed a Viper on the next branch . Phew !!! I started climbing , soon Vipin , Sridhar and Jayanthan (Silent Heros-Sweepers) came along . After a while , Sundar ji surprised everyone by providing  Masala Badam which was the highlight at the finishing point . It tasted damn good !! Soon we proceeded and almost near exit , again Sundar ji took Dates packet and Karthik distributed it to everyone . The timing at which these energy boosters were given was remarkable. It started raining heavily and soon the team started descending in full swing. Around 1:00 pm we exited , with a smile and moment of joy of completing the mission clearly visible in each and every face . Hats off to Sankar ji , Prem for constantly pushing the team .

Inline image 14

Once we got on to the roads ,Bus came and people got onto it in CTC way . After this everyone  in CTC knows what is gonna happen ……

Magesh ji was asking me about why the trek was titled as “LIFE IS CALLING” –
Our souls are in desperation to be united with nature but we are forced to lead an inert life in the cities . It was that moment of happiness, joy and ecstasy that everyone unanimously exhibited after being amalgamated with nature for just 3 days !! Of course the real life out there in wild is calling us to fuse to make us realize the true happiness J

Chennai Coastal Cleanup 4 on 16th June

Chennai Coastal Cleanup is an initiative to clean the beaches of Chennai .

Hey! Why should we put off all our daily chores and go cleaning a public place?

Are we vetti? Aren't there, the workers of the civic dept to do this job? Am I making these beaches dirty, then why should I go and do this cleaning job?

I hear many of you having this question propping up in your mind once a call for a volunteer cleanup activity comes up...

Lets see what the scenario really is...

All most all our beaches are filled with filth, garbage and all kinds of litter, giving us a nausea whenever we go for a stroll on the dunes.

How these things get there?

Yes, If there is an awesome beach, many people tend to visit it. These folks while enjoying the serenity of the beach, have food and snacks, eat it to the whole. But, after they are finished of filling their tummy, the packs that had their snacks; the water bottles that had just been emptied by them; and the ice cream cups and spoons that had just been licked off by them; turn out to be useless by then. They just dump them in the beach and return to their home. Most of these crowd are lazy folks who do not care about the future.

This bad habit has got to be the usual standard practice for many of our beach goers.

The result is that, as hundreds, thousand of people visit our beautiful beaches, the filth left over by them during each of their visits, gets to stay put on the sand dunes of our beaches.

Finally, more of the beaches, which were once so beautiful, is now unpleasant on our eyes, as well giving out nauseating smell inducing a vomiting sensation.  All kinds of garbage; be it  ice cream spoons, water bottles, slippers, liquor bottles, plastic bags, used fishing nets, etc., fill the dunes of our beaches.  If this practice of dumping waste goes on and on., we would never have the opportunity to enjoy the awesomeness of a beach. In due course, the eco system associated with the coastal environment get degraded and if left as it is; its bound to result in a irreparable damage to our community.

Everyone should stop throwing garbage in our beaches.

We should remove the filth that has filled our beaches as well.

Yes, Coastal Cleanup need to be done. The ecology needs to be safeguarded from further deterioration.

During the year 2010, in the month of May, volunteers numbering 880 from the Chennai Trekking Club swung into action and collected 8.9 Tonnes of garbage over the stretch of 15 km of the Chennai coast from Marina till Injambakkam.

This was done by the volunteers who want our own environment to be conserved, so that our future generation would get benefitted.

But, on the other hand, the filth thrown away by the beach goers never stopped.

After an year, the second edition of Coastal Cleanup followed in Jan 2011 in which 1,000 volunteers collected 9+ Tonnes of garbage over the same stretch.

Though the cleanup was being done by the good willed volunteers, who are few in number, on an yearly basis; the daily visitors of the beach, outnumber these volunteers, and do not bother to litter the beach, on a daily basis.

What followed next is a coastal cleanup in February 2012. Though many records have been made by many countries across the globe in achieving something new. Here in our Chennai, we have done a record of the Fastest Cleanup in just two hours. This cleanup got into the Limca Book of Records for being the fastest cleanup by 2,369 volunteers, collecting 17.6 Tonnes of garbage in just 2 hours.

The pity is that, lacs of mindless people who come to enjoy in the beach, just  throw their leftovers while going back home and thousands of volunteers concerned with saving the environment leave their pretty home, come to the beach and clean the garbage, to make the beach look beautiful once again.

Alas the awkward cycle goes on and on. The hard work by the really concerned people have not gone down. The awareness have really spread far and wide.

Fourth time in action, the Chennai Coastal Cleanup/4 got to see a whopping 5,584 people from Corporates, NGOs, Colleges, Schools etc., swinging into action once again to clean the coasts of Chennai.  This time the stretch is little longer at nearly 23 kms starting from Marina and ending at Kovalam.

The innovative factor, in the beach cleanup activity, gained through the experience over the past three years have gone a step higher. From just collecting the waste during the past cleanups, this time the wastes were segregated. That is, different kind of wastes (non-bio degradable / degradable) would be picked up separately and processed accordingly, be it sending to dump yard or to the recycling facility.

From just 880 (2008) volunteers to 5,584(2013). From just the people of Chennai Trekking Club to the people coming in from Corporates, NGO, Schools, Colleges, et all., joining in to clean the beaches, its really a big thingy in the happening.

Though all these ideas have got better; though the group have got stronger; though the records got trumpet on its own, the number of people dumping garbage and filth on the serene dunes of our coast have neither come down nor there any punitive action taken by the agencies that be.

What a pity?

On Sunday, the 16th June of 2013 saw the Chennai Coastal Cleanup 4 making a buzz...

Lets see on what I have done during this activity....

I was part of the cleanup drive "Chennai Coastal Cleanup/4 " as one of the photographers. This years’ cleanup drive, had 16 identified places on the 20+ kms stretch of Chennai Coast. As the call for photo volunteers came in the group email, I registered and was awaiting to hear back. A few days then, I got a reply email informing me of being allocated to the Kovalam Beach area. This is the south most end of the Chennai coast and its the nearest place for me as I go from my town Cuddalore. I was one of the 5 photographers covering the event at the Kovalam beach. In total there were 80 photographers covering the whole stretch.

My itinerary :
The cleanup starts by 6.00 a.m. and my nearly 200kms bus travel from Cuddalore would take roughly 4 hours. So, I took an hour extra to my journey time and wanted to leave Cuddalore by 2.00 a.m. But, bit enthusiastic I put my alarm a little early.

Got up at 12.30 a.m., left home by 1.15 a.m. Usually I walk the 15 minutes distance to the bus stand. I had sufficient time not to fret. So, walked at a 'not at all busy' mode on the road to the Cuddalore bus stand. A couple of minutes into the walk, there was a lonely bike coming from behind. So, just put my try asking for a lift. The guy promptly stopped and took me in. That was a time saver. I reached the bus stand in 5 minutes.

Walked into the bus stand thinking of that I may need to wait for more than half hour to get a bus to Chennai. But, a bus was coming out of the bus stand when I was walking in. I asked the crew, if they would drop me at Kovalam bus stop. Then a nod and I jumped in and took a seat.

What I thought of a 45 minute exercise, all got over in just 10 minutes flat.
I thought of the journey time to be over 3 hours. But the govt operated Ultra Deluxe bus was so quick, they just  dropped me at the Kovalam bus stop at 4.00 a.m.

Oh God!!

I am here 2 hours earlier!

Being here at an odd time; only four or five folks loitering around this road junction; the road being dark at farthest ends; a few MTC buses parked on the road leading to Kovalam; It was a puzzling moment for me on what I wanna be doing for the next two hours.

As I was standing on the West side of the road, I could see three people standing on the other side of the road leading to Kovalam. There was a diesel auto parked in one corner behind the high mast lamp. Its driver sleeping inside the vehicle giving out snores that could be heard while I cross past the ECR road to its East side.  The only other thing I hear is, two biker folks talking and another lone man standing near them.
Got to click this, once I crossed the ECR to its East side. I should go right to reach Kovalam.

After I crossed past the road, I went near the boys with the bike and did strike conversation to know if they are connected with the CTC or the Cleanup initiative. They were clueless, but were interested to continue conversing with me.

I opened up the story that’s gonna happen in a couple of hours to restore back the beauty of the Chennai coast. Their eye brows raised a little. Now I wanted to know, what for they are waiting there? Out came their reply, that, their bike had gone dry of its fuel and one of their fellow biker have gone nearby to get a bottle of fuel.

These guys were very much interested to know about the coastal cleanup initiative and the trekking that happen regularly in the Chennai Trekking Club (CTC). While I opened up the stories of the treks that happen in CTC, they told that they are going on a trek to Thekkady and some forest nearby.

Till that moment, the other lone man standing nearby was idle and seemed to be awaiting for some vehicle to go home. Once we started our talk about ‘forest’ , ‘treks’, ‘nature’, etc., the lone man who was so far simply standing, came nearer to us and opened up spilling tid bits of his experience in going into forests while he had been at Brazil. He had been working in a oil rig there and he came up sharing his experience in going into vast forests there.

I never expected such awesome stories being opened on chats at the sides of a road junction at the brink of such an early morning. All of us were just moving in on different agenda, but came shoulder to shoulder in the mid of a lone junction just because of sharing stories about NATURE. Realized that nature is really a big entity and it has connected all of us here in its story.

Few minutes after that, their fellow bikers came with a bottle of petrol and the bike was topped up with the fuel to get fired. Out of the four people, three were of mindset to leave from there, but one of the four guys was very much interested into the conversation and pitches questions to the Brazil returned man on about the prospects there. All this happening at around 4.30 a.m.

By, 4.45 a.m. the bikers left us bidding adieu. They told of heading to the Kovalam beach. I might have joined them and gone with them to the beach. But, since it was too dark and they being not that known to me, I kept my urge within me and awaited at the junction. Now, I started conversing with the Brazil returned man. Came to know of the facilities he has got and the banking transactions “NRE account” blah, blah, blah. Realized that, decade ago,  there had been too much restrictions for people working abroad, but now many facilities have come up for people going abroad. No hiccups in transferring their hard earned money back to their home!

After 10 minutes, the share auto driver came out of his deep sleep and this Brazil turned to the the driver to take him to Kelambakkam. He too left by 4.55 a.m.

Now, I am the lonely person; awaiting for the sun to come over the horizon and light up the sky; the clock to move faster and strike SIX.

Now I ought to call my brother. He is also taking part in the Chennai Coastal Cleanup / 4 as a volunteer at Besant Nagar area. Confirmed with him that he is on time and heading on Chennai Local Train to catch up with his colleagues to get into their office shuttle bus scheduled at 5.20 a.m. at Guindy. His organization CTS is a corporate sponsor of CCC4.

Then got to buzz with my fellow photographers -  Abishek and Dinesh. Abishek called back to tell that he will be there past SIX.

Far away in the Eastern horizon, the sky is little by little changing in its colour. The black sky wore a hue of grey. Now, a person comes near the junction; approach the high mast lamp; turns off the lights and left. By this time all the MTC buses have left one by one.

Few bikers coming from Chennai turn to left to my side and then head on to Kovalam area. I just kept an eye on each of them out of curiosity, to know if they too are heading for the cleanup activity. But, it was bit hard to clue out and make a contact with a person moving by in a bike / car. With the place being new to me and  am clueless of the logistics, I kept to sitting on the traffic police outpost shamina lying nearby. When the clock was crossing past 5.30, the surrounding had lit up to the mild rays of the sun at dawn.

Being immobile at a same place and sitting there too long, pushed me to little slumber. I needed to pull off from that mode, walk a little, stand for a while and then go and sit there.

After some time a biker on a CBZ bike turns to this side of the road and stops to look at me. I too make an eye contact with him. Both of us were little clueless and he decides to take out his mobile and make a call (of course to me!!). I was for sure, that that biker to be none other than Abishek or Dinesh. I went near to him and told that I am Srini. Wow, its Dinesh.

He took me pillion and we headed to the beach.

The first sight of the beach was so awesome. A road leads to the beach; as the road ends, there is a sand dune. To the left, is the bay where the sea tides go fall on little walls. The roads giving a warm welcome of its sight.

As Dinesh parked his bike, I could see Sabha Sir answering his ever ringing mobile phone. He was taking care of this Kovalam beach in coordinating the day’s work. As is synonymous of any coordinator, Sabha Sir gets calls on his phone from frantic people who are clueless on how to reach this spot. Sun was just above the horizon; but behind the clouds. Few minutes,,, the clouds were just moving off and the Sun came out with a golden hue.

The lighting from the rising sun was so good and I rushed to catch this awesome shot. There were some fishermen going in to start their day's work.

The serenity of this place was really charismatic with the beach having a wonderful bay which goes in a semi circle and would total a length of a kilometer.

Few of the fishermen were busy in starting off their work of getting their boats into the sea for fishing.

Then I moved around the dunes of this beach. The half a circled bay on the North of me was really so awesome, but the vast amount of debris and filth lying to my West defeated the gorgeous beach of its charm.

Then I went up around to see the gravity of the filth lying around this beach.

Adding eyesore to the serene beach was a pool of water which seem to be back waters on the verge of drying up. This half an acre pool had the eye sore in the kind of slippers, used fishing nets, papers, diapers, bottles, plastic bags and many more things floating in it. The ever permeating bad smell gets me a vomiting sensation when I stand there.

Adding to the eye sore is the little goats eating up the plastic covers. This surely is a disaster happening silently, which our community on a whole would realize, only when a big loss has swept past us.

As the milch cow feeds on the poisonous litter, the little calf feeds on its mother's milk.
There were very few people who have arrived for this cleanup. Much more people were being expected.

After some 10 minutes, more people started arrived.

Punitha struck a conversation with an elderly fisherman. From him we came to know that, they are nowadays using 'use & throw' type of fishing nets. In olden days, they had been using much stronger nets which could be repaired when they got damaged. Those nets had longer life. But now, with the availability of cheaper 'use & throw' type of fishing nets, once the net has got damaged, they just throw them off. People are not interested in investing time to repair their nets. Also, the nets are cheaper.

I recall myself of using fountain pen in my school days. A fountain pen can be refilled. Some times I had repaired it and some time I have replaced the metal nib. Rarely I would have gone for replacing the pen itself. Since coming to college, I have never used a fountain pen. Plastic ball point pen got in for my writing purpose. Most of the times, when the ball point pen have gone dry, I had thought of changing the pen, rather than changing its plastic refill. I had many times threw off the used up old ball point plastic pen to dust bin and switched to a new pen. 1996 was the year I had stepped into college. If I assume of using one plastic ball point pen every three months, I should have consumed 51 of them. So, I should have dumped off around 50 plastic pens. What if I switch back to fountain pen? Should I be saving the environment by minimizing my part of adding plastic to our environment? But, practically, as part of my work life, I would never be able to use a fountain pen. Fountain pen would not be suitable for me in certain scenario. Will there be similar situation to the fisher folks? Would they be able to turn back to the old type of mend-able fishing nets?

Switching over of certain styles in our life have actually been a part of the reason of more litter into the environment around us!

Coming back to the day's cleanup activity...
The crowd of volunteers have then become stronger by this time. Many parents have brought their children. I know how much would be the effort for the parents to pull their kids off their beds on an early morning, that too on a Sunday.

But, with these kids having taken part in such a social activity, have got the feel of being responsible to our community. These kids would be more aware in their life and they will surely not throw their litter into the open. They would be an example for others to follow. This improvement in them could never be inculcated by any other means, rather than bringing them for such a cleanup activity.

After a few minutes, the accessories like caps, latex hand gloves, bags for collecting the wastes were distributed to the volunteers.

A part of the volunteers from Sathyabama University. With a distinct dress code for themselves, they did a stunning job. These guys never felt bad to dirt their hands in such bad stagnated sea water.
Then I went near this water pool to click the cleanup activity. The bad nauseating smell was so much irritating and it was hard time to just stand there and click the photographs. But, I really feel great of the people who took the pain of withstanding that bad smell; pick out the thrash from the nauseating pool of water and in the end made the pool look better.

As the sun was coming up, the heat could be felt considerably. As the illumination got stronger, it was a chance for this photographer to try some good silhouettes...

And those silhouettes turned to be awesome.
The Kovalam Panjayath head Mr.Janakiraman provided water, soft drinks, banana to all the volunteers. It was a great refreshment and drove off the tiredness.
Refreshments came in the way of plastic mineral water pockets, refreshing soft drinks came in plastic PET bottles which we drank in in disposable drinking water cups, the milkshakes came in plastic containers which we sipped and drank using plastic straws. Thus, our way of life has got a lot of plastic. I don't think, with so much of plastic involved in our life, we would rather be able to fight off plastic and garbage. A definite plan to recycle / reuse / disposal mechanism is needed to make things come into control. Else, our environment would be full of plastics flying around. Statistics is that, 95% of plastic waste is actually  dumped without any reprocessing.
It was quite a stunning moment to realize that Japanese High Commission had come to the cleanup with her family and friends. Hats of to you MAM!

I was one of the folks to come here when the Sun was just coming out of the horizon. Then the beach was so much filled with filth almost everywhere. Couple of hours later, hard work put in by the people changed the whole scenario. As you see in the above picture, the dunes of the beach as well the pool looked a lot better than it was before.
313 bags of garbage were removed from this Kovalam beach by the untiring efforts put in by 430 volunteers from CSS Corp, Sathyabama, SSN NSS, UST Global and Chennai Trekking Club.

We the photographers were not able to catch up with the key people of the organising team for a click as they were always tied up in making things going for the activity to go without stumbling. Finally after a part of the volunteer crowd left, we could get them for a group photograph.

Above chart shows the statistics of the Chennai Coastal Cleanup 4 on the whole 20+ kms stretch. A whopping 36.7 Tons of garbage was removed by 5,584 untiring volunteers within a period of three hours.

If the daily users of this beach, realize the awesomeness of a cleaner beach; stop dumping the thrash into this serene beach; the awesomeness can be enjoyed by all and volunteer people need not waste their time to right the wrongs made by irresponsible people.

If the government swings into action of levying heavy fines on the persons who are dumping waste here, almost half the work is done.

If more dust bins are placed all around, the people will find it easier to leave the litter in the bins.

If the shops selling eatables and the like in plastic plates and carry bags are taken to the task, once they stop passing off the plastic products, many an improvement could be realized.

BUT apart from the people doing the cleanup, the local folks - fishermen seem do not bother about the filth in the beach. If and only if the daily users of this beach get to know of the importance of keeping it clean, seeing a better and cleaner beach will be a long way to go. In addition to this cleanup drive, the daily users of the beach need to be inculcated of their responsibility not to throw filth in the beach. Anyhow I got a satisfaction of having done some good to the community this day.

I have some questions in my mind after having had a day through this cleanup activity…
Couple of decades ago, we bought our provisions in cloth bags, the shop keepers too sold it by packing them in old newspaper and tying them with twine. Milk men brought us milk in bottles / big containers, measured them and supplied us the milk.

BUT now, each and everything is sold in plastic packages. If we have the guts to switch over back to our old school of thoughts, if manufacturers stop packing their products in plastics, 95% of the job is done!!

Will they?
Will you?
If not
Lets see....
Lets meet in the next cleanup in 2014 !!
