Hope everyone enjoyed the Triathlon challenge on Sunday. Please do share your experiences, photo links, feedback and more in our Chennai Triathlon FB Group

Photos taken by CTC's photographers will be shared shortly.

Even tough participation is more important then winning, it is always interesting to understand your relative performance in comparison to other participants to see whether you can further improve on your swim/cycle/run timings through more practice within the current Triathlon level or whether you are doing above average and are ready to step into the next level in December.

Inspirations

Meet Chennai (India's?) Youngest Half Ironman 12 year old Aditya Sharmaembraced by his proud father Iron Distance man Anil Sharma. True Inspirations to the world! #ChennaiTriathlon

Meet the Triple Tri family: three generations of Triathletes: Subathra Jeyaram, the only female Half Ironwoman in Chennai, her son youngest Enticer Triathlon finisher at just 7 years and dad Jeyaram Ramasamy our senior most Half Ironman at 67 years young. Feeling inspired?

Meet Chennai's Half Iron Triathlete women Deepa Bharatkumar and Krithika Chidambaram. These are Chennai's elite athlete women. They stand next to Subathra Jeyaram as Chennai's only 3 Half Iron finishers. Respect for these inspirational sports women

I am extremely happy to see more and more kids participating in our recent Enticer and Sprint Triathlons - many of them are part of families where both parents and kids participate in this sports events. Ambassadors of active and healthy sports families!

I have always admired Ramachandran Venkatesan - any sports event is a double endurance for this man who has to cover both distance and extra body weight. His immense dedication and infectious enthusiasm is a real inspiration to many out there

http://tamilkilinjalgal.blogspot.in/2014/06/blog-post.html

PLEDGE:

Ø I pledge to get a reusable water bottle while going out.

Ø I pledge that I won’t not to throw any items like bus tickets, water bottles, chocolate

wrappers, ice cream covers, etc on public places Like Beach, Park and Bus stops. I will put

First Aid workshop by ALERT, Aug 2014

Little Gods

Life is all about mending broken things. Be it a relationship or your bones. If you don't fix it or intend to fix it its bound to be lost forever. When I attended the First Aid session conducted by ALERT - we care NGO(I almost quit attending it as I had trouble finding the ePagemaker place and reached by 11), I felt how much ignorant I have been on my common sense of medical emergency. Something more important than my codes, my bike, my smartphone etc.

But then I felt something more. Who are these guys from ALERT? They are just random common individuals like you and me, just a better sample among us. A lot, more inclined to helping the society. These are little Gods who fix, faceless and nameless people at their most crucial moments. Some may live to see the day, those unfortunate may not make it. But being there when an idle crowd is gathered, commanding the situation, calling 108, giving first aid to the injured, curbing panic and a thousand suggestions - Its actually tough playing God. The face of a trained stranger who applies pressure to your half severed hand when you're spitting blood and swearing at him out of pain. But he/she does the necessity of the Golden Hour and walks away when help arrives.

I left from there on a well spent Saturday morning, feeling awesome and better prepared for medical emergencies. There is a volunteer page on the ALERT site. Those who wish to part of this wonderful team can register and train yourself to help others at the most testing times and spread the word. I have registered to be one, may be a selfishness to play God.

Like Rajesh said at the session, we need something ten times the service of 108 ambulances in a complex country like ours, until then we can become torchbearers and equip others. Nothing is better than a well informed independent society across classes and masses.

Sincere gratitude to everyone who have been part of this session, from the first mail till the closing group photo.

Have a great day ahead!!

Chennai Trail Marathon, Sep 7th - Post-event

We hope you enjoyed running in the third edition of the Chennai Trail Marathon/Ultra near the beautiful Cholavaram lake on the Northern outskirts of the city. This year we tried our best in bringing you a challenging multi-terrain 21K loop trail amidst scenic natural surroundings. We hoped that entry level Half Marathon raised the bar for many 10K runners to step up to the next level. At the other end of the runners spectrum we introduced Chennai's first Ultra distance run (on trail!) to push the mental and physical limits of the regular runner. We tried our best in bringing you a memorable running experience, credit goes to many of our close to 200 volunteers, some of which spent sleepless nights to get things in place in a location distant from the city.

We wish to thank the 120 runners who generously donated 60.000 Rs to support the less privileged children of Anbu Illam home in Manali. This amount will go towards building a more spacious accommodation for the growing number of children in the home.

Like any outdoors or sports event in CTC our focus is on creation of awareness on sports, adventure and health through a non-profit spirit by minimizing the entry cost and focus on the passion for the sport. We believe in transparency and will be publishing the accounts of CTM within a few days on our web site. Balance amount will be also donated to the above cause.

We would be publishing finishing timings, rankings (age category, gender-wise) and e-certificates shortly.

We do appreciate your feedback to understand what was appreciated and to learn on areas that need work. Please spend a moment to share your feedback over here.

Please do share your experiences and photo links on our CTM FB Page.

Out of 1200 registrations, 1050 runners appeared at the start line, out of which 902 finished successfully and 742 runners finished within the published cut-off timing (open category). Once again the Veterans and Senior Veteran men overall put down better finish timings then their colleagues in the Open category.
Partly this could be explained by the larger number of new younger runners attempting the HM.

Wonderful Write up by Gayathri:

Dear Green Warriors,
Well this is how I want to acknowledge all of you  with honour and pride. Thanks to one and all for the great deed and wonderful expedition in conserving our nature for the love of mother land. On observing  the involvement and spirit in each one of you participated at the Ayyangarkulam event, it was more inspiring and captivating myself into the Tech Gen Green Revolution.
Whilst the commotion city was fast asleep, at 4am, along with the early birds in dawn, the curtain raiser for the event began, when I joined the ecofriends around 4.30am. The thrill of the expedition began in me, as soon I was introduced to Mr.Ela, and Ms.Sathiya by Abirami during the long brezzy drive.

On reaching AYYANGARKULAM around 6am,I was amazed with the grandeur architecture of the *SANJEEVIRAYA HANUMAN * temple and its 150 acres spread

*THATHA SAMUTHRAM*; a definite eye treat to any heritage lover like me.
As the maintenance work began, every one got readily occupied with pleasing smiles, like the chirping birds around; giving a pleasant fielding ambience.
In due course, I learnt about, mulching, manuring, fencing and other PLANTATION & MAINTENANCE events of AINTHINAI TEAM.

A real hero on field, Mr.Chanderasekar.A.K sir, I salute with due respect, for his perseverance. One mighty knight like him at every event, would drive any weak warriors gallop on their own, seeing his persistent perspirating efforts.

For the ecofriend Mr. Ponraj Natrajan, who innovatively dealt the shortage of tools by reforming the stem of palm leaf into a saw to easily cut away the lemon grass bundle for mulching; and the two ecofriends(Yuvanik Vikram ) who were enthusiastic and over sincere in clearing away the non biodegradable litter around the premises of saplings in the entire stretch=> SINCERE APPLAUSES!!

The boostups with coffee, guavas, paneer soda, apples, fruit cake, water bottles and the raggi porridge with steaming sambar rice for lunch, deserves a high thumbs up.

Ms.Brinda's B'day cake cutting and the group photoshoot was a lovely curtain fall to  mark the end of AYYANGARKULAM-sep 14th event.

I take the privilege of thanking personaly, each one in CTC -AINTHINAI crew; GREAT TO HAVE MET YOU ALL. I had great joy in joining  the team in the quest of executing social responsiblities. I would love to work with the team in the forthcoming events. I hope, I could make it to all events without missing any. Acquired the personal rapport with Mr.Vijay,Mr.Tavethiya Yogesh,Mr.Ra.Aravindh and wish to know all the other dedicated green warriors too.
Each one was unique indeed, but the unison in diversity was a splendid bouquet garni of happy hearts ,scented with graceful smiles. Thanks a ton RAMESHKUMAR, KUMARVEL SRIRANGA for the wonderful captures of the event, which was the icing for the cake.

with warm regards,
Dr. Gayathri Devi Selvaraj.

Date: 23-06-14
Place: Madhya Kailas Signal
Time: 9.30 am
It’s me on my way to office and I am late as usual. The traffic police sure has some special power to sense the day I am late and turn the signal red and thus, I am stuck in the signal. If it were any other day, I would be cursing all those I see. Today I wanted the signal to turn red and I wanted to stand there at least for a few mins. All this, with that curve in my lips and sparkle in my eyes.
Reason?
 *Flashback*
 Date: 23-06-14
Place: Madhya Kailas Signal
Time: 6.00 am
My sister and I woke up in the middle of a good night sleep and rushed to Madhya Kailash. Aravindh and Nambi were waiting there with saplings and few new people. Few of them were namma CTCians and few others were volunteers from ‘Chennai Rising’- a voluntary group in Chennai inspired by The Ugly Indians of Bangalore. They are a bunch of people who are striving to save ourselves from ourselves. They fix ugly spots and clean them overnight. They do not take credits but only wish people see the change and start behaving responsibly. They had cleaned Madhya Kailash bus stop few days back and surprisingly, discovered some soil still existing there. And here enters Ainthinai.

The Chennai Rising had decided to plant some trees in the soil they found and had approached Ainthinai for the job. So there we were- sleepy but masking it with an enthusiastic smile. We planted six pungai saplings on that day. Four on the dump-turned-neat spot and two opposite the railway station entrance. The Chennai Rising Volunteer promised to do the needed mulching for the saplings and arrangements for watering them.

After the planting work was done, there was the regular chit chat and then Nambi pointed to us the Ainthinai statue near the Madhya Kailash temple. Five tamil women symbolizing the five different landscapes i.e., the Ainthinai were nicely carved out of the stones.

What other joy than taking a pic with the symbolism of the name you are working under? For some time we attempted to figure out which landscape each woman symbolized failing which we just resorted to taking a pic. Like any other event of ours, we left for the day to start the day with a light heart and huge satisfaction.

------------****-----------------

That was the reason for my smile. That feeling when you look at a sapling you planted and make sure it is still living- it is nothing less than a mothers feeling towards her child. And that few min stand at the signal gave me the chance to relish that feel.

Date: 26-06-14
Place: Madhya Kailas Signal
Time: 8.30 pm
In the morning, when I was on my way to ofc I had noticed that a sapling was missing from its place. As it kept bothering me, I made a short stop at the spot on my way back from ofc. The sapling, which was the tallest of all that we planted, had gone missing. Feeling bad, I called Aravindh to inform the same and he instructed to remove the mulch from that spot and apply it over other plants. This is not what I wanted to record here. What happened as I started doing what I was asked do, matters much!

I parked my bike and was checking out each sapling we planted. An auto driver who was observing me for a long time came to me and asked if I had missed anything and was looking for it. I told him that I was checking out the plants and shared with him my concern abt watering them. He readily said he will do the job. And as the auto left, I picked up the mulch from the other spot and was putting them for the other plants. A girl who was sitting inside an auto and looking at what I was doing slow moved towards my end. She started telling me how to do the mulching. And then she came out to help me do it. As I was about to finish, she took her water bottle out and poured all the water she had for the plant. And she sent me off with a smile.

I don’t know both of them and I might never meet them again in my life. The auto driver might or might not water the plants daily. But when I was doing something that I believed was right, they both were able to understand it and come forward to do more than just looking at me. All this tells us is-there is hope left. With all the good work we are doing, may be not today but one day we will be able to make a huge impact- a big change- a change that is needed.

I personally feel this two is the count I am starting with. I wish to make an impact on much more twos.

Love,
Sinthu

A tiny step to improve eco system at Madhiya kailash

Since the time I have joined the Chennai trekking club, I used to see different initiatives taken by Ainthinai [Grow your Own Oxygen group] to plant more & more trees and create awareness among people for a sustainable development. Initially I thought it’s more of a show off then really a contribution to the environment. How can a few trees really make any impact to such a big environment?
Seed for change
During one of my trek’s to Nagalapuram, I met Ra Aravindh. His commitment and passion for growing more and more trees changed my opinion .I decided to contribute for these environmental changes.
When I saw a notification for an opportunity to contribute at Madhiya Kailash on Monday Morning, I was reluctant to join specially being a week day. But when I shared the same thought with my daughter Ashna, she was adamant to join for the occasion and contribute. To my surprise, she woke up at 5 AM (regular 7 AM) without any follow-up.  So I didn’t have much of a choice but to take her to Madhiya Kailash.

We were 15 minute ahead of time, and were roaming around to find our Kurukshetra (battle field) for the day. Suddenly one red car was parked below MRT station and a gentleman came out. I approached and asked him, if he is from Grow your own Oxygen Club and his answer was not really but was from Chennai raising Club and came for the same cause. We waited for few minutes to get other team members together. Then Aravindh and Sinthu brought saplings that were mission for the day.

Realty, better than imagination
In fact then I understood, bigger hero for the day was “ The Chennai Rising ” team, who really made this areas suitable for use, few days before, by extensive cleaning of areas and surroundings. Previously, these areas were dump yards and required quite a lot of imagination to think of its productive use. But volunteers from Chennai Rising team had done a fabulous job and need a great applaud.

Good foundation is necessity for strong building
Shovels, iron rods, gloves were out to dig holes. 15 Peoples got busy in cleaning the soil, preparing it, digging holes, putting saplings, filling the soil and putting barricades. Within next hour,we planted 6 Pungai Saplings. We had a very harmonious environment and a good teamwork where the people were committed to contribute.

Together we succeed
Few passerbies were watching us with surprise, hopefully eyewitness to changes and carrier for the message across society. A few people came out with advice and suggestions. These Saplings are not only going to generate oxygen but are also going to create a shadow in couple of months for the nearby bus stand. These are just the small seeds for changes our society needs and hope more and more people will join hands.

It was time for us for shake hands with each other and say good bye, so can join school and office on time. Task for the day was accomplished but the mission is still on.

Know CTC's Green Activities

EventsDescription
Chennai Coastal CleanupOne of the signature event of CTC conducted in a row of 5th continuous years with 6500+ participants across Tamilnadu along the Coastal Shores, River and Lake Beds. In 2014 we expanded the cleanup across India in 10 Major Cities. The main objective of this Cleanup is to emphasize a stronger message on the amount of garbage that litters our water bodies and the process of Recycling
Tree PlantationsWe conduct tree plantation events during the 2nd Half of every Year (Monsoon Time) to promote the growth of trees and increase the green coverage. In the past 2.5 years we have conducted various tree plantations and planted 4000+ trees in various Schools, Colleges, Temples,Streets, Water beds and Forest Areas to promote the eco-diversity theme across Chennai and other places across Tamilnadu. We have been supported by Tamilnadu Forest Department in all our Tree Plantations by granting permissions and tree saplings for our events. Our survival rate of Trees Planted is close to 71%.
Tree MaintenanceTree saplings maintenance events are carried in the First Half of every year to ensure the growth and survival of the trees we planted. The major activities we carry out during these events are Watering, Mulching, Manuring, Pruning and Establishing tree guards thus to ensure the highest survival growth of the trees we planted.
Terrace GardeningThis event is focused to Grow Your Own Food in an Organic Way without any artificial pest controls. Establishing a self-sustaining food eco system on the roof tops to grow Greens,Vegetable and Fruits for your own families. We focus on the methods and tools to cultivate, ways to irrigate and maintaining such roof-top gardens during these sessions.
Nursery MaintenanceAinthinai CTC has its own nursery. Yes we grow saplings at our nursery which hosts all the plant varieties namely Pungai, Vembu, Neer Maruthu,Naval,Poovarsu,Kumil,Vengai & Mandhaarai. We conduct Nursery Maintenance in which we do pruning, remove weeds, mulch and water them for a healthy growth of plants.
Tree Guard CuttingTree Guards are necessary to protect the saplings which grow during the initial years. But a Tree Guard for a well grown tree hinders its growth and damages the tree branches. We conduct Tree Guard Cutting events with the permission of Tamilnadu Forest Department in which we use the metal cutters to remove the Tree Guards of well grown trees. These Tree Guards which are cut are also reused to protect the smaller saplings that we plant.
Tree Walk for KidsTrees are the basics for the survival of life and so as to know its importance too. CTC Ainthinai conducts various Tree Walk events especially to Kids to let them know the importance and history of trees, the anatomy of trees, its growth features and the contribution of trees to the human/animal eco-system.
Awareness SessionsWe conduct awareness sessions on Flora and Fauna during our yearly event of Trek Polama which focuses on sharing the experiences from eminent Naturalists. These sessions are interactive audio, video, practical and speaking sessions where people associated to various Nature aspects come and share their works towards nature, animals, birds and conservation We also had the Tamilnadu Forest Department Team representing this event to establish stalls and interact with the participants on sounding the conservation theme louder.
Waste ManagementWith the main motto of Recycle and Reuse, Waste Management sessions are conducted by us to incorporate reducing the amount of Solid Wastes that emerge out of our daily household. These sessions focus on turning the Solid Wastes to Manures and Vitalisers for plants and reducing the amount of garbage heaps that emerge out of our daily activities. It also throws more light on segregation of these wastes thus making it reused at every aspects of life
Tree MappingMapping the trees is an exercise we conduct in association with Tamilnadu Forest Department to count the population of trees. It’s a census activity were we spot and map the type of tree, its life of existence and its location details pertaining to the areas thus tagging the trees and its identity.
Organic Farming - Back to RootsOrganic Farming is a "Know How of Farming" activity in which we engage the participants on various farming methodologies like sowing, planting, weeding, irrigating, manuring, ploughing and pruning. This also involves the organic practices like preparing Pancha Gaviam, natural manures and natural soil vitalizing techniques.
Air LayeringThis is a unique methodology of producing roots from the stem in which a portion of stem is cut and wrapped with damp moss and polyethene paper. Later the cut area roots to a separate plant, which then is cut and planted on ground. CTC Ainthinai conducts such sessions to create new saplings from the branches of large trees.
Forest WalkForest walks are conducted in association with Tamilnadu Forest Department to know the importance of Forests and its association to Animals,Birds and Human Beings. These sessions also focus on conservation methods and human-animal behaviors/conflicts
Seed SowingSeed Sowing events are conducted in River Beds, Tropical and Marsh lands to promote the growth of trees. We sow neem, pungai and vengai seeds during the rainy seasons to promote the green spread across the wet lands thus enriching the soil bed.

What did we do in the past 6 months?

CTC Green Day - Why plant trees?

Why planting trees?

  • Trees filter our air and keep it fresh by absorbing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen.
  • Tree roots stabilize the soil and prevent erosion.
  • Trees improve water quality by slowing and filtering rain water as well as protect aquifers and watersheds.
  • Trees are carbon sinks, accumulating carbon as they grow and acting as stable carbon stores upon maturity
  • Three-quarters of the world's people rely on wood as their main source of energy.
  • Thousand of things are made from trees such as furniture, books, newspapers, houses, hockey sticks, guitars, pencils, fences, milk cartons, even nail polish and toothpaste.
  • Trees lower air temperature and induce rainfall by evaporating water from their leaves.
  • Trees provide food, shade and shelter to humans and wildlife.
  • Trees offer protection from the downward fall of rain, sleet and hail as well as reduce storm run-off and the possibility of flooding.
  • Trees act as sound barriers to reduce noise pollution.
  • Trees play a major role in helping to conserve the intensity of the Earth's magnetic field.

CTC's Tree Map

Ainthinai - CTC's Green team - has planted 4000 trees in the past 2.5 years covering many areas in our city as well as various places in the outskirts and deeper inside Tamilnadu. The Google Map below shows which all locations have been covered so far.

Check the Google Map Link to zoom into the various locations.

Where do we plant?

Candidate locations for plantation are selected based on the support of the local community or conductive environment to maintain and sustain the saplings such that the survival rate is maximized. Our overall sapling survival stands at  an impressive survival rate 71% overall. The chart below shows the category of locations selected and how much percentage of total saplings in each type of location -
