Yo Yo Yo!

Everybody in the house! Final home assignment before we go out into the field to climb some hills. Previously we have been using modern GPS technology to position ourselves using latitude and longitudeTime now to take a look at the good old methods like compass and altimeter to identify our approx. location. We will be doing some hands-on with both in the next upcoming field assignment.

Assignment 6

Type: home assignment
Date: Fri Mar 6th
Deadline: Tue Mar 10th
Duration: 1-2 hours
Submit one set of answers per team
All team members to participate & understand

Magnetic Compass

The compass is a useful tool for navigation and orientation in the field. It allows us to identify "direction" or "heading" or "bearing"
The needle of the compass points to the (magnetic) north which roughly corresponds to the top of the map (true north)

While holding the compass flat in the in your hand you can take the "bearing" or "heading" to any landmark visible in the field (e.g. tall building, peak....)
Taking a bearing to a landmark which is visible both in the field and identifiable on your map will assist us in find your approximate position on the map without the use of modern day GPS

Electronic Compass

In our field assignment we can use the Smartphone app "GPS Status" which has an electronic compass
Keeping your phone flat in your hand and pointing straight towards any landmark shows the "heading" towards that landmark:
(125 degrees in the example below)

Altimeter

Another useful tool for identifying your position on a map will be the altimeter which shows your current altitude or elevation
Many gadget watches come with an altimeter build in which is useful for navigation:
(Below watch shows an altitude of 2430 ft or 740 meters)

Bearing

Let's take a real-world example of bearing now. Open Google Maps and Create a new Map.
Say for example we are standing on top of the 200m tall peak near Chengalpattu (mark a waypoint on your map)
Southeast we can see a water tank at location:  12°40'26"N,  79°58'30"E (search this location and mark a waypoint on your map):

Standing on the peak, we point our compass towards the above water tank visible in the field and take a bearing of approx. 126 degrees (Southeast)
On our map we can draw a line through the peak with an angle of 126 degrees and it will go straight through the water tank

Similarly we can draw a line through the water tank on the map with an angle of 126 + 180 = 306 degrees and it will go straight through the peak
So using the bearing taken in the field we can draw a line through the same landmark on the map and it will cut through our current location
To identify our exact location along this line we will of course need a second reference line, either a contour line or a heading to a second landmark
More on that below - for now just try to understand the concept of bearing as shown on the map below:

Positioning

Without the use of modern day GPS technology there are 4 easy ways to identify your current field position on a map using contour lines, altitude, bearing or a combination of these
Remember what we said above: you will always need 2 references to identify your position - each of the 4 methods below will use the intersection of 2 reference lines

Positioning through Altitude

Say for example we are climbing the central hill along the Southern ridge (black line)
The altimeter of our watch reads 120 meters
How can we now identify our current location on the topomap?
Simple: the intersection of the ridge line and the 120m contour line shows our approx. location:

Positioning through Bearing

Once again we are climbing the central hill along the Southern ridge (black line)
From our current position we use our compass to measure the bearing to the water tank which is 90 degrees (East)
How can we now identify our current location on the topomap?
Simple: intersection of the ridge line and the 90+180=270 degree bearing from the water tank

Positioning through Altitude and Bearing

Now let's step away from the ridge so we cannot longer use the ridge as a reference line on the map
Our Altimeter shows an elevation of 160 meters (which means we are somewhere along the 160m contour line)
Using our compass we take a bearing to the water tank of 108 degrees
How can we now identify our current location on the topomap?
Simple once again: intersection between the 160m contour line and the 108+180=288 degree bearing from the water tank:

Positioning through two Bearings

Again let's step away from the ridge so we cannot longer use the ridge as a reference line on the map
Using our compass we take a bearing to the water tank of 126 degrees
We identify another landmark which is visible both in the field and on the map:
A white apartment building in Chengalpattu at  12°41'21"N,  79°58'43"E

Using our compass we take a bearing to the apartment of 52 degrees
How can we now identify our current location on the topomap?
Simple yet again: intersection between both bearings: 126+180=306 degrees from water tank and 52+180=232 degrees from the apartment
Our current location is at the intersection of both lines (and appears to be the peak of the 200m center hill):

This assignment was all about using traditional methods of compass, bearing, altimeter and contours to identify your current location

Self-assignment

Now let's try the same for a hill nearby your residence / city. Use the 4 above methods to identify 4 different positions on the hill
For each method upload the resulting map showing the intersection of both reference lines and submit a link to your map screenshot in this answer form

After home assignments 4,5,6 you are ready to go for your next field assignment now applying all the things you learned in the real-world!

Bootcampers,

Now that we learned about elevation, contours, topomaps, ridges, valleys, bearings and positioning let's apply this knowledge in the field through a real-world hill navigation exercise.

This assignment must to be completed BEFORE our final Nagalapuram mountain navigation field test planned next weekend March 21-22.

Assignment 7

Type: field assignment
Date: Friday 13 Mar
Deadline: Thursday 19 Mar
Duration: one morning or evening
Submit one set of answers per team
All team members to participate & understand

Planning a trail

First step is to select a small set of hills near your neighborhood / city (do not choose any large mountain range yet)
Create a trail (min. 500m, max 2.5K) using Google Maps Engine across this set of hills through either or both:
  • Use of pre-existing trails (refer satellite map)
  • Using ridges and valleys (refer contours on terrain map)
Important: ensure to view your trail in both terrain view (to see that it's not too steep) and satellite view (to see that the vegetation is not too dense)

Create a few interesting waypoints: e.g. start/end point, peaks, saddles, existing trails, etc.

Note: you can reuse the trail you created in the previous assignment #6 if you find it suitable for hiking (steepness, vegetation density)

=> submit screenshot of your planned trail on topomap (Google Maps) - answer 1

Preparing for the field

Export the trail through KML or GPX and load in Oruxmaps (refer previous assignment)
Choose "Switch Map" in Oruxmaps and select "OpenStreetMap CycleMap" to load a contour map
Zoom into 300m scale and move around the entire trail to cache the map in your phone (available in field without mobile network connection)
Ensure your phone is fully charged, switch off data before you step into the field to maximize battery life for GPS/navigation/map viewing

=> submit screenshot of your phone showing planned trail on topomap (Oruxmaps) - answer 2

Navigating the hills

Travel to the the starting point of the loaded trail
Enable the build in GPS of your phone
In Oruxmaps, switch on "GPS tracking" to show the current position
Switch on "Track Logging" to start record your trail till you reach the end
Now - similar as the field test in the plains - use your phone to hike along your planned trail in the hills
Following a pre-existing trail or ridge or valley is mostly straightforward. Only once in a while verify that you are still on track by checking whether your current position is still on the trail
Any interesting point you come across along the trail you can create a Waypoint in Oruxmaps

Taking Bearings

Once you reach an elevated location (e.g. peak) with sufficient visibility around you
Create a waypoint W0 for your current (reference) location and make a note of the latitude and longitude
Look around and try to identify any landmark which stands out (recognizable both in field and on satellite map)
Use your magnetic or electronic compass ("GPS Status" app) to take a bearing B1 from your current location to the landmark.

Now look for another landmark in the field (preferably approx. 90 degrees apart from previous one) and take bearing B2
Read your current Altitude A1 from either Oruxmaps or GPS Status app. Make a note of B1, B2, A1

Proceed along the trail until you reach the end point
Switch off "Track Logging" in Oruxmap to stop recording

=> submit screenshot of your phone showing actual recorded trail on topomap (Oruxmaps) - answer 3

Post-field trail analysis

Once you reach back home download the GPS log (actual trail walked) from your phone to your laptop (refer previous assignment)
Load the trail in Google Earth and view your trail in 3D from different angles
Enable the elevation profile for your trail => submit screenshot of your actual trail in earth view with elevation profile (Google Earth) - answer 4

Similarly load your trail in Google Maps (Create a new map, Import Trail)
Switch the basemap to Terrain View to view your actual walked trail and waypoints on the contour map => submit screenshot of your actual trail in terrain view (Google Maps) - answer 5

Compare the trail on the topomap with the elevation profile and try to correlate both (ascents, descents, peaks, saddles)
Locate the waypoint you created for your field reference location
Verify the altitude A1 matches with contour lines near your waypoint

Switch the basemap to Sattelite View and locate the waypoint W0 you created at your field reference location
Identify the location of both landmarks on the satellite map and create a waypoint W1, W2 for each
Create a screenshot of the map and copy paste it into a drawing app on your laptop (e.g. Paintbrush)

Draw two bearing lines B1, B2 through your reference waypoint W0 (refer tutorial on drawing bearings on maps)
Verify that the bearing lines B1, B2 are going through the respective landmarks W1, W2 => submit link to screenshot of satellite map, waypoints for reference point and landmarks, bearing lines (Drawing App) - answer 6

Submit your answers above for review in following form.

Positioning

Similarly the bearings and altitude taken at the reference point in the field can also be used to identify your location on the map (refer assignment#6):

method1: contour line A1 intersecting ridge on which you were standing
method2: W1, B1+180 intersecting ridge on which you were standing
method3: W1, B1+180 intersecting with contour line A1
method4: W1, B1+180 intersecting with W2, B2+180

Try the four methods above by yourself and verify that every time the intersection corresponds to the waypoint W0

CTC Bootcamp 2015 - Tutorial on reading bearings

A few teams requested help to calculate a bearing between two points on a map. Below I put a small tutorial together. This should make it easy to execute assignment 7 at home: calculating bearings on map.

Say for example we are standing on top of our 200m hill near Chengalpattu and we wish to take a bearing to the pond Southeast (both marked with red circles):

Step 1: draw a vertical (0 deg bearing, North) and horizontal (90 deg bearing, East) lines through your current location:

Step 2: Copy any compass image onto your map and align it with your current position: e.g. match the 0 bearing and 90 deg bearing as shown below
This will ensure that the center of the compass corresponds to your current position

Step 3: Draw a line from the center of the compass (=your current position) to your point or reference (e.g. lake pond)
Where the line cuts the compass you can easily read the bearing: in this example: 125 degrees:
So from your hill top the bearing to the pond is 125 degrees (useful to understand the direction of the pond from your current position)
And from the pond to the hill top the bearing is the diagonal opposite: 125 + 180 = 305 degrees (useful to calculate your current position from the pond location on the map)

(Taking a bearing to a reference point in the field is normally done using a compass:
Standing at your current location you ll point the compass straight to the reference point and read the approx. bearing from the compass
For this home assignment we are doing it using Steps 1+2+3 so we don't have to go out into the field (yet)

Step 4: After you have taking a bearing in the field with compass you can then use this to identify your current position on the map:

Put the compass center at the pond location (see step 1+2 above)
Draw a line from the center of the compass through 305 degrees (=pond bearing + 180)
You can see below that this line (=bearing) cuts through the hill top which is your current position

Hope this clarifies the 7th assignment a little bit more!

Types of Compass

The above tutorial shows you how to take bearings on a map with a simple compass image
A more practical way to take bearings is using a compass: (you ll of course need to buy one first :-)

1. Hand bearing Compass

For taking accurate bearings in the field this type of compass is best suited:

First you point the compass to the reference point in the field
Look through the narrow vertical opening of the top piece and ensure that the vertical wire cuts the reference point (this will ensure the compass is perfectly aligned with the point)
Next you look through the magnifying glass to read the accurate bearing from the main compass

2. Map bearing Compass

A map bearing compass is useful to take bearings on maps in two scenarios:

A. Take bearing between two known points: (Step 1-2-3 above)

Align the side of the outer rectangular plate with your two points (current location at bottom, reference point at top)
Turn the North arrow of inner compass wheel towards top of map (=North)
The direction (arrow) line on the plate now shows the bearing on the inner compass wheel: 320 degrees in the example below

B. Find your current position using a known bearing from a reference point (typically taken using a hand bearing compass in the field) (this is another method for Step 4 above)

Align the side of the map bearing compass plate with your reference point
Now rotate the plate (ensure the side remains aligned next to your reference point) until the direction (arrow) line points to the given bearing + 180 degrees
(while rotating the plate also rotate the inner compass to ensure its North continues to point to the top of the map)
When both the plate angle matches the bearing + 180 degrees and the North of the inner compass wheel aligns with top of the map then you can draw a line from the reference point along the plate of the compass
This line will intersect with your current location on the map

EMPERORS CARNAGING TRIP TO BR HILLS by Ravindra Prasanna

It all started from the day I registered for this ride. Doing a bike ride for so long distance after a year had adrenaline rushing through me as to thinking how to do it. Still was ok and was sure of doing it. Here was lot of other events planned in the same week end, but shortlisted on this. Did not have my riding gears and a strict mail form the organizers made butterflies in my stomach and the next instant was in the shop buying my riding gears. Got all the gears and was ready and took my King of roads Royal Enfield and reached the meet up point fully with gears outside. Seeing the hot sun was just thinking how am I going to get fried with the gears on. Was the first one to arrive in the meeting point. None was there, and then met arun and slowly everyone started pouring in. Nice to see an enthusiastic group in front of me. Everyone got ready with their gears on the ever strict organizer Balaji started with all his instructions and safety to be followed and started riding.

The great design wizard was my pillion and started riding for some kms and the wizard took the bike from me and started riding, it was a slow and steady pace drive following balaji in the front and Praveen sweeping us. Everyone came to the first halt and got introduced mostly to all because mostly I, arun and sivashree were the newbies I believe.  Oops forgot was amazed to see doctor on saddles Elakiya and was just waiting for a time to ask about her interest in bikes which got fulfilled only in our return back to chennai. The road stretch till krishnagiri was nice and it was like we are the king of roads on our bikes just ramping through the night. Then with some more halts everyone reached the nice road toll and the organizers got us an excellent place to rest down.

Oops forgot the ambur star biriyani where it was as usual rampaging dinner which we can always see in trip with emperors and after some photos and chatting sessions we all started to take our rest. As soon as I entered my sleeping bag was like a heaven for me but still there were there guards of mosquitoes always ringing in our ear and all over.

Then came yet another organizer Bharani and ever teen ager Gowtham who were both dressed up fully with gears to fight against our mosquito guards. Everyone got up early morning and soon started getting ready for the onward journey. Organizers gave us necessary instruction and the order in people has to drive and we started our ride.

It was excellent stretch of riding to BR Hills. We reached banks of Cauvery where everyone settled down for some time and me and ever talking sheik, kannan, newbie arun and balaji had a dip in Cauvery River

which was refreshing. Then Saranya got us a healthy breakfast in pine apple and water melon and to add spice ended with a bhel puri. It should be an awesome feeling seeing the bikes in order like the cannons fired in the road. The sky god was as sweet on us as the climate was excellent. We all started entering the reserve forest hills and waiting for lunch, as our tummies started banging us. I enjoyed our ever teen ager Coimbatore mapla Language nice to talk with him .he is a pro regarding bikes and everyone got inside the hotel for our lunch. As usual I was just running through my dishes and everyone was doing the same stole a chapatti from bharani plate also and everyone finished our lunch. But accountant saranya till the end did not get me appalam. Jokes apart she was a smiley of our group and it was going great with her capturing us in her marvelous eyes through our beautiful camera. The pictures were excellent as it brought out the awesome feelings in us.

Then the organizers had booked us rooms in the resort and everyone started settling down and everyone had a small nap. But as usual girls went on with their photography typical girls just kidding. Then after a small rest everyone got ready for a trip around the hills and we reached places where we took lot of selfies and photos and slowly the group was getting in the groove. Then after spending some time started back to our rooms and in between went to temple and had some nice views.

The trip back to the room seeing the bikes in order was like an army marching in excellent co ordination. Then everyone came to run had a refreshing bath changed up and all came to the campfire place. It was nice to get to know everyone and everyone became jovial with people started pulling the legs of others. It was mostly praveen's excellent translation in one of the previous trips was the lime light. But the silent tornado was praveen kumar who was in to everyone and then we played dumb sharates an old but fun filed games bringing out the excellent acting skills in us. Then had a good dinner and went off to our room and had a very good sleep.

Early morning had a walk in the roads and it was nice smell of the misty morning and nice to see nature at its best. Always live with nature never will it disappoint us. Everyone once again garnered near the camp fire area and had a good breakfast and everyone got ready once gain with their amours for the return ride. Had plans of seeing some more spots but did not have sufficient time and had to start with the return journey.

The return ride through the sathyamnagalam forest roads the ghat roads was excellent everyone went roaring in their bikes with the black sheet covered and we were driving in to it. The thimbam hair pin bends were like cursive writing on the floor. The bikes lines up one behind another and had an excellent ride back down the hills. It was one of the awesome stretches of roads which I have seen and driving was excellent really felt a meaning in my life and vowed never to forget it. Everyone was down and I think the weather god was little harsh on us as she had showered the sun out and yet we did not bow down and we decided to take it on. Everyone had good butter milk and started driving back, halted for lunch with good non veg and veg verities and everyone started back.

Before this one of our organizer Bharani , Praveen kumar and Coimbatore mapla gowtham left us tangling down and they went their place. Everyone reached krishnagiri where the organizers decided to rest for some time and azeem bhai went onward to his home . Then everyone had some rest and then again started early morning and it was really awesome driving in the night . Had small tea breaks where we saw our camera draining out, yazer anger, and everything.

Then the last stretch was covered where everyone had to depart . Mean while in between this only had a chat with elakiya and really was happy about her passion towards biking and really as praveen said “It’s a disease once you get that passion “ and it’s very much true. Had some good conversation with her .Then everyone departed and started towards their home and at the point of reaching my home my trip meter was 1252 kms and was amazed that we drove this long.

So here I end my amazing experience in this trip and was really an excellent ride and the way saw bike trip before this and the way  handled my bike was very far better at the end of the ride . Vowed to join this group whenever possible. Special thanks to our organizers, accountant and excellent friends who made this trip memorable and once in a life time
experience
. As I take this saying life starts out of our comfort Zone which I always see in peters mails it’s really a great saying.

“Live with nature, the best life you can get“

Write Up from Praveen V V

"Yet another ride with Emperors" that is what I thought when we started the ride. But CTC and Emperors made it an unforgettable experience as usual.

It was in the noon when we reached BR hills, the last 40 kilometers were a awesome ghat section. Both the curves and sceneries were impressive. Unlike a usual Emperors lunch everyone had lunch only from their plates :P. May be because of the long ride everyone was tired enough.

After lunch we started our ride for sight seeing to K.Gudi. People are back to form when we reached K.Gudi. It slowly started with selfie with elephant, then people started teasing each other and finally fun reached its peak when people started teasing our accountant. It was about 2 hours spent at the lawn with elephant(Kumki) at the background, romantic sunset, selfiees, groupfies and fun filled conversations.

After we are done with BR Temple view point we reached our rooms. Everyone recharged ourselves for campfire tonight. Campfire started with Praveen's Madurai and Mattuthavani translations. When dumb charades started people were in full form. Dumb charades is the most common game but the participants made it the ultimate fun.

To mention few highlights it was Gautam with his clueless reaction, Sheik with his die hard efforts in an attempt to explain "Aaria Suriya", Elakya with her "Rendu Surya" prediction, Azeem with his 11 letter clue for Aadhibhagavan and Balaji - Saranya - Yasar - Siva - Arun for their tough competition. (Highlights may not make sense for people who are not available in the spot but participants would enjoy those memories)

Next day it was ride, ride and ride.. It was all in one experience from ghat sections to lonely forest roads to Thimbam hairpin bends to Gobi countryside and finally highways leading back home. What else I can ask for as a rider.

Am not mentioning anything about the accommodation, food, comfort level and way of rides. It was all CTC standard and at Emperors benchmark quality.

Would like to thank all the participants for the wonderful trip and memories. Extending special thanks to the organizers Praveen, Bharani and Balaji, accountant Saranya, photographer Prassanna.

Thanks,
Team Emperors.

The purpose of life is not to be happy - but to matter, to be productive, to be useful, to have it make   some difference that you have lived at all.  ~Leo Rosten

One Gentleman who live by above quote is Mani Kandan.
My friend for almost 2.5 years, met long ago in a CTC Ainthinai's plantation event.
Ever since I know him he was Blood donor and a individual who arrange blood for the patients based on requirements acting as a bridge between patients and the Donors. Over the last 2 years he have arranged over 250 units of blood saving those many lives.
He have shared with me many happy news over the months seeing kids leaving hospital happily and healthy after operation and parents and relatives praising the donors as Gods.
There were negatives too when unable to fulfill the requirement operation gets postponed, resulting in disaster. Its much painful in a city like Chennai which have a population of around 1.5 Crore and still some patients loose life unable to get adequate blood on time.
The best way moving forward is to take it to the students to create more awareness and the importance of Blood donation, Hence when we met Raji madam and students [NSS unit of College of Engineering, Guindy] in a Paddy cultivation event organized  by Ainthinai, both teams decided to organize a camp at the college campus on March 25.
CTC have organized Blood donation camp at its last 3 annual Trek Polama Sympozium's witnessing good turnout of Volunteers to donate blood.

The event started as planned at 9.00 AM with Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital Blood Bank setting up the camp with support of student volunteers of MCC.
Students came in huge numbers to donate blood from the beginning till the end few had to leave as they haven't completed 18 years of age and less Hemoglobin, hope in future they too can donate happily saving more lives.Total 120 Generous donors donated Blood. Majority of the donors donated for the first time , its energetic to see the interest of students for a cause. Thanks to the volunteers(Students & Staff) of Madras Christian College& College of Engineering Guidy and other CTC volunteers Jeswin , G Arun Prasad , Venu Kathick, Vijay and Manikandan. Thanks a lot all the volunteers and donors. Special Thanks to Mani Kandan for pushing all limits to get the Blood for needy patients and saving lives .

Wonderful Write-Up from the Participants of Ainthinai - Saplings Maintenance Drive at Govt Girls School, Kovur, March 7

Write-Up from Selvam:

It was 5.30 in the morning. The day was fresher than any other. After cleaning myself I had to put all the tender coconut shells, which I arranged the previous night, into a single sack so that I could carry it with less hardship. After half an hour Mr. Sudharsan, from whom I was to get a free lift from, reached my house. With a huge sack, which probably weighed more than me, on my lap we started from my place to reach Porur at 6.30 as planned. When we started, I thought I would drop the obstinate sack, in some point of time,  in the middle of the road before reaching Porur and create few casualties. But all that did not happen with my temporary superhuman capabilities. Once we reached Porur, we gave a call to Mr. Nambi and asked about his whereabouts. Nambi instructed us to come directly to Kovur. We finally reached Government Girls School, Kovur at 7.00 AM. The school ground was barren of trees except for those saplings that Ainthinai team had planted few months back. While we waited for few more to join us we got familiar among ourselves. Then came more people with them sugarcane wastes and wood wastes.

Finally we got ready to do what we came there for. We were instructed by Mr. Mani and Nambi of what to and what not to do for the next 3 hours. Meanwhile, joined with us the lovely school children, who happened to be our morale boosters as well as to be ever accompanying us. The hours that followed for us, especially for those who had proclivity towards spending time with school children, was surreal.  True, spending time with kids deprives us of all our egos, worldly thoughts, shyness and what not! We should learn from them how to live happy and joyous rather than from elders. In turn, Kids too learned lot of things practically that gave them a break from our mundane Indian mug up education system. The time spent for one hour of practical learning was worthier than five hours of theoretical mugging up. Special thanks to Nambi and Mani who took special interest in showing those kids how to plant a sapling and maintain it. We saw that few saplings were eaten by Cows and Goats. Nevertheless, it was not fully dead. We advised kids to take care of them by having a close watch of animals that eat saplings and watering the saplings daily, especially with the summer setting off or all our efforts would be futile in no time. I hope they maintain it regularly.

Mr. Arun and Nambi please visit the school frequently so as to remind the school children of our work, which will be a morale booster for them, and to watch the growth of the saplings. Also please make sure that the way does not become easier for animals to enter the school. We had put little thorns on the way they enter; still I feel those animals would make their way in one way or the other. Sorry Cows and Goats, we too want you to eat good food but not inside that school.
We along with kids not only planted and maintained saplings but also cleaned the campus of plastic and other wastes as much as we could. We collected 3 big sack of wastage. Pity, we could not dispose of them manually. So much were the garbage. Overall it was a pleasant day. Hope we all continue this work with same vigor forever. Thank you.

Write-Up from Anjali:

Ainthinai!! Google said it meant the poems categorized into five landforms typically called as five "Thinai's" namely Kurinji, Mullai, Marutham, Neithal and Palai. I just don't have much clue about the lines above. The term excited me and I decided to venture out and see what it was about. This was the second time I was participating in an event conducted by CTC. The motive was to understand what Ainthinai program is; I initially thought it might be planting of trees but later I saw the invite mention it as the maintenance of trees planted. It sounded great than planting a tree. The thought that many of us are not aware of how to maintain and protect nature and even themselves triggered in me the need to get educated about those and to share my knowledge with others.

Early in the morning with a fresh mind and soul, we started to Government Girl's School, Kovur. The school had thirty five saplings which were planted six months back by our group,a few  of which stood as energetic young plants while few other saplings were eaten up by animals. We were given instructions by the coordinators, Nambi and Manikandan before starting the event. The knowledge they shared, developed in us a newly found spirit to work for the cause. A process called ' Mulching' was taught to us which was an interesting topic. We were asked to bring the requirements for the mulching process such as sugarcane waste, tender coconut shell, wood particles etc and the process was really interesting one practically. We also cleared the plastic waste and cleaned up the surroundings.

How can I miss the lovely girls who enthusiastically worked with us and entertained us with their giggles and sweet talks throughout the event? The headmaster of the school encouraged and supported the students to actively participate in the event. The girls gained knowledge from us as well as implemented it which gave us a feeling of satisfaction and they even promised us that it’s now their responsibility to safeguard the plants and the saplings. The inspirational talk by Dr.Abirami with an example made a good impact on the students mind.

> Her quote was"Small plants are like small babies".
> She then asked do babies know to take care of themselves.
> The girls chorused a loud 'Nooo'
> She said, likewise we have to take care of the saplings and grow them into big trees the same way a baby is nurtured and nourished into an adult.
> The girls cheered with a big round of applause.
> Altogether, it was a wonderful work guys and should continue to do such activities to protect our mother "EARTH".
> Hope to see you all soon.

1. When history is being made, better be a part of it!!

We made it to the Limca book of Records in 2013 & who knows, with your help, we might end up in the Guinness soon! And no, we aren’t obsessed with stats & records- it is the symbolism that matters .

2. Worried about your calories?? Try volunteering. And let this be the beginning :-)

3. Age, often, is just a number & not an excuse !

4. Forget turtles…. We Humans need the beach too !!

Ever experienced that moment of solace when the sea ,along with the sand under your feet , washes off loads of ‘not-so pleasant memories’ ?? Well, thats under threat now & WE need to act!5. Hands-down lessons on management, team-building skills??For free, with a smile ;)

5. Hands-down lessons on management, team-building skills??For free, with a smile ;)

Even if you think planning & organizing for 5000 + volunteers is no big deal, just hop on- we are sure our volunteers would amaze you with their on-field innovations, coordination & team-work!

6. Believe us - Trash picking is indeed fun !

Why else would they smile, spending a sunday morning under the hot sun, amidst heaps of garbage?

7. Its time for our kids to learn their environment lessons in practice !

You would have probably Reduced and Reused at your homes. It’s time to Recycle -And CCC provides you the right platform! Our last two versions saw trend-setting collaborations with recycling agents- Over 3.3 tonnes of plastics, 4.3 tonnes of Shoes/Slippers, 2.5 tonnes of liquors bottles, 476 Kg of Thermocoil and 98 Kgs of metal cans were recycled , thus saving 27.8 MWh of energy and over 3, 00,000 liters of water.

8. CCC is not just a one day activity- It is more of a lifestyle change!

We understand that CCC isn’t a magic wand to gobble up the million tonnes of trash accumulated all over. It is the change in the thought process that matters & thats where we strike the chord.

9. Ready for some early morning goosebumps, Anyone???

Comfort zones exist only in the mind & its high time you breach them!

10. Finally, It’s OUR trash, and WE ought to pick up!! Its an obligation & not an option!

Honestly, we couldn’t find any reason more convincing than this. The quest for a change has been omnipresent . Its time to be the change instead.
Spread the word !!

Chennai Coastal Cleanup - Killing is My Business and business is Good - Say NO to Plastics - June 7th, 2015

Plastic are everywhere. Landfills, drains, rivers, oceans. It messes badly with us humans and especially the young ones. Some say plastics live 1000 years while others believe plastics only break down to microscopic synthetic granules that last millions of years. Plastics are killing wildlife. An estimated one million sea creatures die every year: entanglement, swallowing of plastics. Birds are known to mistake plastics for food and fatally consume them. 10 million tonnes of plastic enter our oceans every year. Plastics have entered our food chain. Chemical additives used in plastics adversely impact our health. We are using plastics more then ever before. In the next decade there will be 1kg of plastic for every 3 kg of fish in our oceans.

When will we ever stop? It's time for us to act before it's too late! #ChennaiCoastalCleanup#SayNoToPlastic June 7th, 2015

Into the Green Meadows - Emperors Trek to Munnar

Write up by Sandhya

It was 13th of Feb and as I received an email from the organizer announcing the shortlist for the trip, however to my surprise, the Sub of the mail read Munnar trip and the body of the mail announced it was a Kodai trip. Not sure what Emperors were up to and if they were taking us to Kodai in place of Munnar, so with all my inquisitiveness, I called up the organizer to confirm the place. Apparently, it turned out to be a typo from our organizer, who had missed editing mail content after copy-paste from the previous trek email :P. So after checking the travels, I scanned through the going list and it was a co-incidence to see 2 known names, and I quickly booked tickets for 3 of us and confirmed back. As the trip date was approaching, preparatory emails /trip volunteering mails started flowing in, and then Nigam announced that co-ordination of activities was getting out of hands over emails and created a whatsapp group… So, it was the perhaps first time ever for many many of us in the group with many unknown faces, that a whatsapp group was created 3 days ahead of the trek and by the time I had switched on the mobile data, 300+ messages and 30 mails had already been exchanged. The hot topic that was on at that time was sleeping bags, as Malan had just made an akashavani update about the temperature in Munnar. Just then Vibin had announced that he could help out with a visit to Decathlon Coimbatore. Within few seconds, there was a stream of messages, and it was evident that he was possibly going to empty out the Decathlon outlet, having dug a hole of his own pit. The group was abuzz all the time until Friday night about sleeping bags, food (one point it appeared as if it might be a foodie trek after all ;)), DSLRs.. photographs and many other things – A spl mention to Siva who wanted his pictures taken for many other purposes (Anyone can guess what it is for :D). Since we had booked tickets in different buses, we just got a chance to meet each other only in smaller groups on Fri night. By the time I had boarded the bus from Perungalathur, I could see that people in my bus had already had a great time pulling legs of Nigam. It was evident that Sankar had got his companion for the trip as he was elaborately explaining how 5D in DLSR stands for 5 Devis to Nigam. Looks like I had missed a lot of this, all the way from Koyambedu to Perungalathur. There was no need for an introduction having become familiar with many names from the whatsapp conversations. After some chit chats, we decided to settle down for the day as the next day was a probable Sivarathri owing to lack of sleeping bags and the sounds from the teeth chattering and shivering and god only knows who all would be snoring. As we arrived around 6 in Theni, we met up with the other group there and thanks to Vibin, our sleeping bags had made their way to Theni. And hopefully he hadn’t encountered any known face all the way from Coimbatore to Theni who would have possibly inquired his intentions to start a new business ;)

Almost everyone had assembled in Theni except for Amar, who had booked the superfast Papps travels :P. So, we boarded the bus to Bodi and Amar joined us there as we were having our breakfast. It was breakfast time, and we could not have asked more as the food made it’s way to Malan’s table. With the funny faces that Malan and Siva gave althrough their breakfast, I wonder how neither of the two got stomach aches in the trip. After pitying our state, the waiter finally made the way to our table, and two swift hands (Who else.. Siva and Malan) had already scooped half of the idlis even before we could start our breakfast. So, after breakfast, we took a groupie in van and made our way to Kurangani. The organizers had announced in the van to start moving as soon as we had got down and so we made our move. We started our ascent, just stopped by at times for a minute or until we came across two trails, one in the uphill and the other one leading to a bridge. The rest of the group was nowhere in sight, and five if us - Dinesh, Nigam, Prakash, Brinda and I decided to go a little further and relax in the small stream. Though the sun was out, the water was refreshingly cold enough that we didn’t feel like moving out of it for the next 20 minutes and then as we sensed there was no sign of the other group, we went back to the point where we had seen the other trail. Someone had just climbed up and confirmed that we had to take that path, however the rest of the group wanted to refresh for some time in chilling running waters and instructed us to wait near a big rock in the other trail. So, that’s when five of us relaxed for some more time, then stretched out our muscles once again and then after a long wait, we had some juicy small amlas (a last minute add to my backpack) and then some chit chats until the group arrived. Meanwhile, Nigam had made his way back to the stream to refill a couple of bottles, while Nigam had got back, there was no sign of the other bottle that he carried. However, one bottle less had made my backpack lighter. Malan started on a different trail with a set of people and just as we were resuming back after our extended break, Vibin called out to the rest of the group and expressed his view that the slowest person in the group lead the rest of the trail so that we could all stick together motivating the freshers and other folks who had started becoming a little tired now.

A few more words on team work and motivation and what happened for the next few minutes after that was definitely a moment worth reliving as the slowest person was leading and was trying not to stop anywhere in an attempt not to slow down the rest of the group, and a few others behind shared the backpacks, and we were slowly moving on together as one group until we encountered some thorny bushes which played a major spoiler. We couldn’t keep up the momentum going amidst the bushes which were 6 feet high and we had to push the grass and thorns to catch a glimpse of the person leading us. Sensible people who covered their hands with atleast a ¾ sleeves were lucky enough to escape the thorns, however the trail was getting more bizarre with the bushes hiding our view as we kept on moving. We tried to keep watch of few people following us and directing them then and there on some bigger stones, gap in the path etc to ensure that no one is getting hurt/lost. No matter even if thorns lay in the path, it would still not deter a few of us from posing to the pics and flashing our best possible colgate smiles to the shutterbugs. After crossing the first part of the bushes, we waited for the group to assemble, however as Kannan and Vibin started their swift ascent, people started getting a little tired. What followed next was perhaps the most challenging part of the trek, we tried to ascend randomly in zig zag patterns in a non-existent trail covered with thorns as high as 6 feet, the person in front was hardly visible, we could hear sounds of shoes slipping behind us and some sounds from behind asking us to slow down, however none of us were helpless as the person leading us was hardly visible and could not even hear us.

The best part of a trek is that we tend to transfer our energies among each other, and an energetic person can keep a tired group active, however even a shrill cry and someone gasping for breath from behind can greatly bring down the energy of the group during an ascent. As I was trying to find my way out, someone was shouting out directions from top which was somewhat motivating, while the person was nowhere to be seen. I grabbed and pushed the high bushes and made my way and suddenly I felt my legs slipping for the first time. It was time to remember all the gods now, and then some wild imagination and self-motivation did some wonders and finally after some really quick moves and a fast paced ascent, I was on a flat surface. I could see no sign of the person following me, and beyond a point of time, I had unknowingly left behind a tired person who was following me, as I was in the last leg of the ascent to the flat surface. Ram, Gokul and Prakash were relaxing there and I put down my backpack as well and opened up some amalas. I could see a tree full of bigger amalas a little bit away from the flat surface, and Dinesh helped out in plucking them and then as more people started joining us, we shared the amlas with the rest of the group. While we had to do a lot of zig zag climbing in a non-existent trail, Malan had led a group on a vertical trail and we slowly started assembling. Meanwhile, Naju and Gokul been lucky enough to grab hold of the amla bag and take out the much juicy and tastier smaller amlas ;) however it was important to preserve the resources for the rest of the ascent and not exhaust them and they had to be satisfied with very few for now.  After sometime, Vibin who had gone back to check on the person following me appeared with a backpack and finally group was relaxing and gaining back some energy – It was rest time. Vibin’s bandage (from an earlier injury) had come off and Sindhu, our group’s doc was up in action dressing it up and then we decided to move on further and stop next only at a Solo tree for lunch. As we kept on moving, Malan and Sankar were pointing to a tree as a Solo tree. Whenever there are rats running in our stomach, even a group of trees appeared to be like a single tree, however the climbing went on and on, and on and on… and finally the Solo tree arrived, which was one-third of the path covered. Some of us had a power nap until the rest of the group assembled. Then, it was lunch time and we started having the chappatis from the parcel, not everyone can be as lucky as Ram who carried his own set of homemade soft rotis. It was perhaps my first lunch with the dirtiest ever hands, of course we had to preserve the water until we reached the tea estate and someone passed on a wet wipe for cleaning hands after lunch.

After lunch, Solo tree point appeared to be one of the quietest moment of the trip and Nigam was pointing out this how this point was apt enough to be called a ‘zero decibel’ point in the entire ascent. However, as soon as Sankar started singing, zero decibel atmosphere was gone, and folks who were sleeping and reluctant to move, were more than ready to move now. After some more stretching for the people who had got cramps, we moved on and often stopped by to catch a glimpse of the view from top and to wait for a part of the group to assemble. The ascent was pretty much manageable even after we were walking through the dense forest. We were walking through a clear trail and there was hardly a chance of anyone getting lost. After two-third of the ascent was over, around 9 of us grouped up again and then after some photographs, we resumed back. The forest walk was really good when it started, we were chatting as a group and enjoying the cool breeze. I had gotten into a different world in between observing a flycatcher pair as they were shuttling between two three trees. For the first time perhaps I regretted for leaving behind my binoculars to keep my backpack light, and then the scene of three of us falling down (who else .. me, my backpack and binoculars) esp while going through those bushes flashed through mind J and then there was no more second thought of carrying the binoculars as it was not something essential for a trek :P. As a part of me realized that I was still walking on the dense forest, I turned around and I could see no one ahead of me and behind me, and singled out as I was started moving ahead cursing the group that had left me behind. It was then that I realized that in spite of a cool breeze, my hands, neck and even few parts of my face were full of scratches and the sweat dropping down and the salt content had started giving me a burning sensation. All this time, I had been chatting with a group and had never realized that the scratches all around me. I called out to a few guys, and Ram who answered back in return ‘Aao ji Aao’ chose to move on forward. However, within a few minutes, I could see someone walking behind with a DSLR on the neck. Prakash was in the same shape as me, sweating all over and looking a little tired experiencing the same kind of burning sensation. A shutterbug could do wonders and no matter how much tired one looks, that would never stop someone from flashing the biggest ever smile in front of the cam.

It was a little slower ascent for next few minutes though we were closer to the tea estate and we required sight of some cold water/some highly energetic person to cheer up and be back to form. We decided to relax at a point and as we were lying down and enjoying the view and the forest listening to the tweets of the squirrels/bird sounds, and suddenly from nowhere we also heard a tamil song from nowhere. We were not sure if it was a hallucination though both of us had heard it, and the very thought of Sankar giving us company till the tea estate with his songs gave us instant energy that we immediately started walking and didn’t stop until we reached the tea shop. After all, the trek was all for a cup of tea from the world’s highest orthodox tea gardens, so as soon as we reached Prakash and I ordered the tea. We washed off our hands and face and it was such a heavenly feeling to wash off the sweat and could have even taken bath there had there been a waterfall nearby. I was re-energized and recharged after a splash of water on my face followed by two cups of strong tea. Prakash had moved a little ahead and after my tea, Naju and I climbed up and caught up with the rest of the group. The view of the tea gardens from the top was incredible and as it was photo time after reaching the top. After a tireless round of selfies, groupfies, jumping snaps and solo pics, we waited for the Sunset and Vibin suggested we go to a little forward to catch a better view of the Sunset. It was indeed an ‘out of the world’ feeling, watching the last rays of the sun hit the green meadows and enjoying the cool breeze as the temperature dropped down. We were joined by Malan and Co in sometime and every one of us got into the jeep, all set to reach Munnar.

Our jeep started and initially it was a roller coaster ride, though after a point of time, it really didn’t matter. While the heftier and the luckier ones in the jeep were dozing off, the unlucky me had to contend with seeing others’ face as they were sleeping peacefully, and I was busy all through the jeep ride trying to hang on to one position as I was sliding from left to right and right to left in each and every bend. After realizing my weightlessness during the trip, I thought it was perhaps some time for a nice good dinner and atleast the drive back to the camping point would perhaps become somewhat manageable. But the problems of thin and lean people are countless, and this time, the hot dosas were gone with the same speed as they had arrived into my plate – thanks to set of people sitting with me. The next set of roast had arrived but then again hands pounced into my plate from nowhere and everything was gone within matter of a minute. Somehow, I too could get my hands onto a few bits of dosas and idlis from some plates and finish off the dinner. Then after another round of tea with Dinesh and Amar, we again went back to Jeep and finally settled down in a place in Marayoor for that night.
Snoring sounds in different voice modulations could be heard all through the night and somehow we had managed to sleep comfortably in our sleeping bags. Then we woke up around 6:30 the next day and packed up all stuff. While the S15’s were comfortably folded and into their respective bags, Brinda’s wildcraft sleeping bag almost gave a scare. I had folded even the S20’s and S15’s comfortably before, but not matter how much effort was put on in folding this Wildcraft bag, it refused to go into the bag. It seemed as if all the last night dinner would get exploited in just folding one sleeping bag. Then, it was handed over to the guys, and somehow thanks to them, all was packed in the bag. Then as we went to refresh, I could see a few people applying huge amount of paste and brushing their teeth as they were brushing their teeth after many many days, while 2-3 people were hunting for neem sticks and settled down with Mango leaves as their equivalent. Then we had some apples and after filling our bottles, we were back into the Jeep, off to Chinnar to visit the Thoovanam waterfalls. The sun god was all beaming on Sunday morning as we arrived at Chinnar and waiting for the clearance from Forest dept since we had to pass through a zone with dense elephant population. The itching and burning sensation again returned as the sun shown up brightly that day, just then, Dinesh, our Sheikh Abdullah of the group suggested to cover up with a coat or another shirt to bring down the intensity over the sun and I started feeling okay after shielding the scratches to a certain extent from the sun though it was still a little hard as sweat kept dripping on. Then, we had another round of photo session there and no idea how many people actually got their dream matrimony pics from our Star photographer of the trip, Srini as they had planned to, as per the whatsapp conversations ;).

Then, as the forest guide arrived, we walked further for the next 3 kms accompanied by some real monkeys too on the way, until we arrived at the spectacular Thoovanam waterfalls. While few of us settled down for breakfast spreading jam over the bread slices, some could not control their excitement and went for a dip in the waterfalls. The water was extremely cool and it was a heavenly feeling to sit under it for some time. However after sometime, I started feeling very cold and moved on for next round of bread slices, after all that’s the only thing no one would want to snatch from you during a trek ;). After a nice waterfall massage which was refreshing enough to forget about the itching and the marks for the rest of the trip, some of us settled down for another round of photographs. People were having great fun in the waterfalls, some of them were freezing and shivering all over as they came out after the dip esp Gokul who went for a matter of few seconds and then settled down for a sun bath. Then after a group pic in the falls, we started back, this time again Nigam, Dinesh, Ram, Prakash, and Brinda giving me company, we started moving on, stopped in between for a couple of breaks and then resumed back. Then after a point, we could see the road, so we decided to climb up to the road instead of the rocky path and as we were in the flat surface, Nigam, Dinesh and Ram exclaimed that jogging was good for health and jogging saves up 10% of energy over walking and then they started jogging on the road up till the jeep (it was perhaps another half a km to one km distance). We obviously didn’t want to comment about them opting to jog at 1 PM. I was feeling greatly refreshed after the short and sweet waterfall bath and I didn’t want spoil that with a run and we both just moved on talking about few other things as we reached near our Jeep. After sometime Naju and Siva too joined them, then we three had a strong black tea while Dinesh bought some watermelons which were over in quick time. And soon as everyone had assembled, we filled up our water bottles and were back to top station. We had our lunch there, one group esp enjoyed the fish kolambu too much I guess that they were talking about it even during the dinner.

You cannot stop thanking Newton for all his contribution in the discovery of gravitational force as we started the fast paced descent. Nigam and Dinesh went first and then Malan, Dheebika and I followed and here and there, we stopped to catch a glimpse of the path that we had taken during ascent – the path through thorny bushes, the Solo tree, then the dense forest that we had passed through. We were mostly discussing about the path that we had taken the previous day as we were descending down, mostly through the alternative easier paths in between in place of the curled zig zag trails and we stopped in between for a wonderful sharbat. Most of us had two galsses of it and then ten of us started down and in between we stopped for a minute in the falls to wash our faces and once we reached the base point, we ordered another round of tea.

Then we were generally talking anout the trip and few other things and warmed down and the rest of the people started joining us one by one. We started with an introduction session after a groupie, however it was interrupted as the bus started to move and we had to rush into the bus. We reached Theni around 8 as Dinesh bid goodbye and left. It was dinner time and treat time for the freshers ;) as discussed on the way to Theni and Dilip was in action trying to sponsors for the dinner. After a good dinner, it was time to say goodbye to everyone as we had all booked different buses way back to Chennai. Then 5-6 of us again took a mini bus from a bus stop near the hotel and reached the boarding point.

It was a wonderful feeling that night as the pangs of pain had been overwhelmed by the cool breeze, the wonderful moments of the trip and the new friends made over the weekend. A huge huge thanks to the organizers for the great trip and that this wasn’t called off though Vibin had had a leg injury, thanks to our self-proclaimed super singer accountant Sankar for staying on top of accounts and finally to Parakash, Srini and Sudarshan for capturing the wonderful moments of the trips. It was a super awesome trip where we had a lot of observe and learn, while someone was slowly and steadily ascending up without a break, a lot of them was wanting to share as much information as they could with freshers trying to give them a best possible weekend, freshers trying to push them as much as they in an attempt not to slow down the entire group. It might have been the end of the Munnar trip.. never mind, conversation continues on whatsapp for many many treks to come ;)

Wonderful Write-up from the volunteer Anup

My Day couldn't start on a more positive note,i was all set to do sapling maintenance for a bunch of saplings planted at the Egmore Women's and Children hospital by Team CTC a few months back. I thought it’s a great way to serve and give back to society. But wait there was more to it and heres why.
If you give it a thought ,watering the saplings which would one day grow to be majestic trees and give us plenty of free oxygen and shade cannot be called a service,it is much more than that ,it should be called insurance ,life insurance to be precise for both you and your loved ones. The Best Part is unlike the conventional insurance you don't need to pay in cash ,that too for years together.Just watering and maintenance for 1 or 2 years is more than enough.

So how many of you are ready to sign up for this insurance??
Coming to the event details,a bunch of enthusiastic volunteers gathered at the premises early morning and began with the task.We had to do mulching and watering for around 37 saplings planted by CTC volunteers a few months back.some of the volunteers had taken the trouble to get sugarcane bagasse which was later used as a mulching material.
Mulching by the way is a process of using plant waste, dried leaves, sugarcane bagasse etc around a  saplings base, so that moisture is retained and the water doesn't evaporate easily in this heat,we would like to thank Mr Mani aka BloodMani for telling us about the process in details.

We were done with all the mulching activity by 8:00 am and took a small break to relax ,during the break Mani took feedback for the event and asked for suggestions to make it even better in coming times.
all done??
Well No, watering was the next thing on our minds, which we finished around 9:00 am.
The entire experience as usual was very good, there is always a feel good factor associated with such tasks and the high that it gives.

Nowadays With our city temperature rising, just like we humans ,plants also find it hard to quench their thrust, especially because they have not yet grown into full blown trees,so why not help them?
I would like to use this platform to request everyone to be a part of such events in the future and see for yourself the immense satisfaction it gives
In the end i would say "There are some things money can buy ,for everything else theirs Chennai Trekking Club"

Wonderful Write-up from Sandhya

Around 18 of us gathered in Egmore hospital on Friday morning 3rd of April for the Sapling maintenance activity to assess the condition of the 37 saplings planted in the hospital in Jan this year. By the time I had reached, the Sun god had just shown his gracious presence, and most of them had started with mulching, watering of saplings with their caps on. The garden hoe was put to use and the soil bed near the root was covered with some cane husk waste. This process is called Mulching and it is done for the plant root to remain moist and survive the heat from scorching sun - Thanks to the volunteer who has preserved the cane husk for this maintenance and had brought sufficient quantity for all the plants in the Egmore hospital.

From the earlier events, it was noticed that the coconut husk gets shrunk once it dries up and hence sugar cane husk was the primary mulching material for this event. The hospital had its own bag of non-biodegradable waste and it was essential to keep off the plants from this, hence some of Ainthinai volunteers set out to pick them up. Then, we had an introduction session where we came across interesting people and interesting names :P – Heaven guy, Delhi Babu topped this list of course ;). This was followed by a short meet with Mr. Dilli Babu, the gardener in Egmore hospital and Mr. Rajkumar of Ekam Foundation, who played a key role in providing an opportunity for CTC Ainthinai to plant saplings in this hospital earlier this year.

Then Mani started explaining about the blood cancer patients in that hospital and how often the requirement of blood would arise for these. It was disturbing to hear that an active child in the same hospital had passed away last week due to lack of AB+ blood. It was unfortunate that this child couldn't get the required blood when the need arose, though 50 units of same blood group was collected 10 days before this requirement. We realized how a life could have been saved had the news of blood requirement reached the person who would have been eligible and interested for donating blood at the right time– every share in social media does matter in these situations and could make a huge difference.

Since it was a working day for most of us, some of them left while Anup, Barani sir and Manoj completed the watering of plants, sapling count in Egmore hospital. Meanwhile, four of us including Preethi, Prabhu sir and Mani made our way to Nurse hostel – the path was fully decked with huge tall trees, it definitely didn’t appear to be like a part of Egmore. A special mention to the organizer, who was so eager to make his way to this hostel with an excuse of sapling maintenance, not sure whom he had come across here during the plantation event :P. As we reached the spot, there was no need to search for a mulching material, we were greeted with huge amounts of dried soft flowers from the trees there, and 4 of us completed the work in quick time with this soft mulching material.

There were many more sapling planted by the hospital gardener and we spent some time there watering plants and clearing off the plastic waste. Thanks to the efforts of Mr. Dilli Babu, the gardener who had done the frequent watering of all the plants, we had 100% survival of the saplings planted in the previous event. It is well said that “Save the trees and the trees will save you” – It was our time to make our hands a little dirty for them and one day, they would be re-paying them back with lot of fresh air and respite from hot sun, few more summers down the line.

Wonderful write-up from P.S.Sridharan Sir.

I am trying my hand in a write up.

I got a call on Sat  from one of the participant to confirm about participating and mode of transport. Good start as the volunteer had fulfilled his assignment. On Sun morning all assembled before Trade Center as scheduled many in bikes and one with his car. The car was handy for making couple of trips during the maintenance work as well for safe custody of all the shoulder bags. The cute girl of 8th. Std. was all the time  quenching the thirst of the participants apart from her self doing and learning about the mulching. Mr. Irrulandi sir talked about  the benefit of mulching,

Since we have located two coconut OLAI bundles in the vicinity it came handy.  Lot of dry grass and material adjacent to the work place made it easy. It was fulfilling job and most of the time sun god was showing his mercy and wind god also kept a cool breeze,

Hero of the day:

In my opinion it was none other than Mr. Irulandi Sir himself.

He was there at the start of the job till the last batch left the area. He could have spend his week end with his family after organizing and getting the work progress through cell from Ela  but he has also put his hand and worked with us which is abnormal. He had hosted a quality and quantity breakfast personally bringing from the hotel. Here only he used his position to get the breakfast in the containers as our aim is no to plastics and he said now on he will direct the visitors to the area under his control not to bring plastic.

Normally we always give the maid servant the left out after filling our belly. But here is a person who called the maid servant as soon as the food arrived and given to her first. When lot of food was left out he went to nearby building called the watchman and shared with him. You just can not imagine in India a senior officer sitting next to a watchman and eating. These things made me to call him as hero of the day. there was one more gentle man came along with him at the start up.   Dear friends, the residents of the River view is fortunate to have him in their locality. He has hosted us the breakfast though it is customary we normally have contributed breakfast.

It is good our team leaders had developed a good relation ship with him and he will be source for our tree plantation programs.
I wish every one will join me in calling him as hero the day.
When we were waiting for the breakfast it was a great treat by the very young girl by singing couple of songs. We enjoyed it. One of team leader Blood Mani also sang a beautiful song Thodudayan.

At the end we after our good by drinks came to know the Birth day another young participants. Instead of spending the day with his near and dears in hotel or elsewhere he opted for a great work. I congratulate him for his decision. He is our second hero.
To end up let us not follow some of the residents who were on their morning walk. They are elite people holding good position in Govt. but not even one smiled us and talked to us or inquired about the work. Though you are 24 hr Govt. servant once we come out we should mingle with others and for this reason alone I choose Mr. Irulandi sir as hero of the day. God bless him.
Couple of person were on their mobile directing their staff what to do which means they have given importance to the tree maintaining program.
At the end it was very much satisfying day meticulously planned by ELA, Blood Mani.
Thank you all and have a good day.

Wonderful Write-Up from Rathi Anbusatchi.

A small recap of the event,

The greatest invention comes from an idea and so is this organization. An idea was born, discussed, planned, and executed. It’s never as easy as it sounds to organize an event to plant 50 saplings; with 50 members in a governmental institution. It is a great hardship. No one would have even thought of executing, but in CTC, it’s nothing more than a piece of cake.

Ainthinai, green wing of CTC has done a lot of remarkable events previously and this was another feather in the cap.

The event started for me just a week back on receiving a mail, but for the organizer it would have started a month back probably. With all the background work on getting permission in a Government Hospital in Egmore, arranging for the saplings, tools for digging pits and checking the area for planting with respect to sunlight, water facility and soil was all done and ready when we received the mail. All participants had to do was to dig a pit, plant and water it, more importantly to spread the awareness- the main focus of the green events.

Generally planting saplings are done in out skirts of Chennai, this time it was carried within the city in close proximity. Of any other times, this gave an opportunity for many to participate. We had more number of volunteers than expected. It was encouraging knowing many had the desire to change the world and in preserving the depleting environment. This clearly marks the success of Ainthinai’s goal.

All participants gathered in front of Government Hospital for Women & Children in Egmore by 6:30 a.m. There were challenges as certain location chosen for plantation wasn’t available. More number of volunteers came forward and we made the maximum usage of available space. A brief lecture on the saplings to be planted, its usage and importance were clearly explained.  A demo was also given by Mr.Mani on the method of planting the sapling and reason behind every step.

All participant started the work by 7 30 a.m. Work was divided among everyone and they started off. Loosening the soil with the crow bar, digging the pit with hoe/spade, planting the sapling, covering the pit with manure mixed in the soil, tightening the soil by applying pressure and mulching to avoid evaporation of water was done. This process continued for 3 full hours.

Apart from this, Eeyakam, an organization working on social welfare in regard to hospitals also joined hands with us.
There was also a brief session on importance of blood donation, stem cell donation and the importance in spreading their awareness.

By 10 a.m. we took a short break for breakfast, had an energetic diet and started the work again. The remaining saplings were planted in the nursing hostel. All planted sapling were properly watered with good mulching.  We let few saplings to be planted by students in the hostel. This would help them in creating a close bond with nature and drive them in maintaining the environment.
By 12:30p.m., started work was completed with full satisfaction and we headed to our homes with a broad smile and a greener future. A special thanks to Mani, Ela, Abirami, Prabhakaran for their efforts to make this event happen and to Ravi and Rajasekr for capturing the event in colorful ways possible which holds the memory forever. A very special thanks to all the participants who made it to the event and made it fruitful in the best way possible.

Little drops of water make a mighty ocean; every small sapling makes an oxygen filled world tomorrow.

CHOOSE TO BE STRAW FREE

Over 500,000,000 plastic straws are produced every day and been consumed all over the world. Unfortunately, a vast majority of these straws end up in our oceans, contributing to millions of tons of trash and over 1,000,000 seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals ingesting plastic.

It’s time to say “no” to plastic straws.

Straws its an use and throw products, before using that straw think for 5 secs without using that also we can drink any kind of liquids....

moreover using a PLASTIC STRAW BETWEEN YOUR JUICE AND MOUTH IS LIKE HAVING A MEDIATOR BETWEEN YOU AND YOUR GIRLFRIEND/WIFE....

Special Thanks to Mani Kandan for pushing all limits to get the Blood for needy patients and saving lives.
