Chennai Coastal Cleanup - Call for volunteers in Corporates/Apartments to implement waste segregation and recycling

$

As part of the #ChennaiCoastalCleanup we are engaging in a series of initiatives to create awareness and take concrete steps towards implementing waste segregation and recycling in Corporate buildings/workplaces and Apartments/Residential areas. Please take a moment to read through these and register your details in the form provided below if you are interested to take lead initiative of implementing this in your workplace or residential area or both.

Be the change, Lead the Change.

Our 'Singara Chennai' has had and continue to have many firsts to its credit. But the one that we wont be proud of is that beating Kolkata and Delhi to top the Indian Cities list in garbage creation. Around 6404 tonnes of garbage is generated every day by the city, with every household contributing 30 per cent recyclable, 60 per cent organic and 10 per cent hazardous waste. This is in addition to 9,898 kg of bio-medical waste from the 730 hospitals in the city. Kodambakkam, Adyar, Anna Nagar and Teynampet zones of the municipal corporation are the highest contributors. Not to mention about the huge amount of waste that is generated by us in our workplaces, things such as paper cups, tissue papers, etc.
The two crucial aspects that could bring this statistics down are waste segregation at source and proper waste disposal. The plan here is to get in touch with the corresponding people, CSR team in the case of Corporates and Apartment Board President/Team in the case of Residential areas, explain them about this process and setup a meeting with Earth Recyler team to implement proper waste management system.
If YOU wanna be the changemaker in your Workplace/Residential area and take initiatives to implement a proper waste management system please register your details in the links provided at the bottom.
Few of the Apartments have already came forward to implement waste segregation in their building, courtesy our active CTC volunteers. Tranquil acres is one such apartment, which is located in Thoraipakkam-Pallavaram main road.

Tranquil acres phase 1 residents association have aggressively taken a decision that they will take responsibility of waste segregation that is generated from each of their houses. CTC and Earth Recycler will jointly help them in gaining knowledge on

  • Identify the waste generated at home
  • What is a good waste, what to recycle.
  • Identify Inorganic waste and send it to Recycle as the first phase.
Tranquil acres phase 1 has 232 flats (approx. 4 people each house), 928 residents.
Tranquil acres phase 2 has 250 flats (approx. 4 people each house), 1000 residents.
1 super market. 1 Vegetable market, 1 swimming pool.
Amount of garbage produced  ~ 1 Tonne /day
Waste water                          ~ 1.5 lakh litres / month after used for STP

Stage 1 : In 3 months time they will have reached a state that where they wont be sending any recyclable inorganic waste to landfill. Inorganic waste will be stored for a short period of time in their apartment for Earth Recycler to pick it up and pay them based on weight.
Stage 2 - Once this is achieved no inorganic waste will go to landfill. Organic and sanitary waste will be separated. Earth Recycler will help them in finding a composite yard and get the Organic waste transported there. At this stage sanitary waste alone will be going to landfill, that too until we get some solution on that :)
Stage 3 - Water management. We are planning to clean the water and recharge the ground water. Unusable water alone will be transported out to industry where they have an option of using this water once.

This is the current stage of the garbage collection bin. Hope to see this better and non-smelly. And be a safe place for the next generation to grow up in. Buying home alone is not our responsibility, what we get out of that home is also our responsibility.

Let’s start saying no to the polythene covers offered generously in the supermarket and by vegetable vendors… anywhere and everywhere. I know it is not that easy to say NO when somebody is offering a less maintenance or a use and throw stuff. But its such a huge burden that we are giving to mother earth to digest. Mother Earth is suffering, in fact crying aloud unable to bare the plastic. Listen to her voice. Lets join hands to get our workplace and living place healthier and get our kids habituated for this waste management. If we can get our kids understand this, they will correct us when we are unconsciously doing something wrong and infact they in turn will teach more people as they grow.

Lets be proud to say that, WE GENERATE VERY LESS LANDFILL.
If you are working in a Corporate/MNC and wanna take the lead initiative in implementing such a waste segregation and recycling system in your workplace, please register your details here: http://goo.gl/forms/20tv3tyEbf

If you are residing in any Apartment or community living area in Chennai and wanna take the lead initiative in implementing such a waste segregation and recycling system in your residential area, please register your details here: http://goo.gl/forms/jqjZbnKj5z

Post Event Write-up: Bangalore Swimming Workshop May 2nd, 2015

We had great time organizing Bangalore Swimming Workshop by Mike Johnson. For those of you who missed it,

Attached is a set of videos for different aspects of the freestyle stroke.  We covered many of these points in the workshop and there's a lot more quality information here about the fundamentals.

Swimming requires strength and balance in the water, which can only be achieved by practicing consistently.  I suggest the following framework for your practices:

1) Stretching - Ensure that you back, shoulders and legs are loose before entering the water
2) Kicking - Start with some kicking with a kickboard or on your side, stomach or back
3) Drills - Run through some of the drills that are demonstrated in the videos attached.
4) Full stroke - practice putting the stroke and kick together.  Go slowly and ensure that your technique doesn't fall apart when swimming full freestyle

[If you're able to swim 2 laps of the pool without stopping]
5) Endurance Sets - online you will find workouts that you can follow to improve your strength and endurance.  Ensure that your technique is solid before training because it will be harder to correct bad habits later on.

As part of the #ChennaiCoastalCleanup we are engaging in a series of initiatives to create awareness and take concrete steps towards reducing the use of plastics in our day to day lives which are harmful for the environment and our health. Below are two initiatives for which we require your help. Please take a moment to read through these and participate if interested:

1. Recycle Shops

As part of our awareness campaign for this year Chennai Coastal Cleanup,
we would like introduce you Chennai's most service oriented people with
respect to waste management. The recycling shops in chennai plays
huge role in segregating, recycling the wastes which in turn reduces
the garbage being dumped in dump yards. Volunteers are required to
contact your nearby recycling shops/paper mart shops to be part of our
initiative. Let's connect the people who are in need and the people who serves.
Let's form a waste network smile emoticon Waste is not a waste until
it is wasted. #ChennaiCoastalCleanup

2. Plastic Free Shopping

Action Plan:

Identifying the Grocery Shops who packs the items in Eco Friendly Materials

Plan Description:

Unavoidably Polythene has become one part of our body in recent years. In our day today life, 75% of products/materials which we have been using contains the plastic. In olden days, our Parents and Grand Parents were not practiced to use the plastics

Our main plan is to reduce the plastics consumption while purchasing the groceries from shops. Probably more than 70% grocery items can be purchased without plastics from the local market. So we are planning to identify the local/nearby whole sale shops who sells the groceries in Eco-Friendly material.

Agenda:

1. Identify/Talk with a shop owner about the impacts of Polythene avoidance in our life.
2. Convey your interest on purchasing the grocery items along with the interested people
3. Ensure and give confident him that more people are interested to purchase the groceries without plastics/polythenes
4. Collect the necessary details like Name of the Shop, Contact Number, Land Mark, Address and list of grocery items he can pack in Eco-Friendly material.

General Questions and Answers:

Q: Will the grocery items be good, if we purchase from local shops?
A: Definitely we can get the good quality grocery items from local market.

Q: How can I purchase Oil from local shops?
A: You need to carry a reusable Oil can to purchase the Oil.

Q: How can I keep the items which are packed in paper after I opened?
A: Well. We can purchase reusable grocery containers to keep the items and Horlicks bottles to store the grocery Items.

Q: Can we buy all the grocery items without plastics?
A: No. It's not possible to purchase all the items without plastics. But we can reduce the amount of garbage which we are generating.

Interested people, please visit any of your nearby shops and collect the necessary details in the below Google Form. Once we collected the shop details across the City, we can share it with CTC members to make use of it.

Chennai Coastal Cleanup 2015 - Creating a Sustainable Future - Summary Update

6 years ago 150 CTC volunteers traveled to Tada, 2 hours from the city and went deep inside the forest to restore the scenic Tada falls to its original natural beauty. 500 big bags worth 2 tons of garbage including plastics and broken bottles were removed from this "eco tourism" spot. An environmental awareness movement was born. Soon after that we brought the movement closer to the city, to its own beautiful beaches covered by a layer of garbage through own from the city's rivers and shore. Over the years more and more people got sensitized and joined hands in the annual Chennai Coastal Cleanup. From a plain beach cleanup to segregation/recycling to long-term sustainable initiatives to reduce our garbage footprint. This year the passionate team behind Mission CCC has initiated many initiatives towards a greener and sustainable future.

The Recycle Wizard!

Chennai Trekking Club has teamed up with Earth Recycler to segregate and recycle maximum garbage collected from the Coastal Cleanup, apartment complexes and corporates. Last year Earth Recycler recycled 85% of the 50 tonnes of garbages collected by 5000 volunteers from 20km of Chennai beaches reducing significantly the amount of garbage going to Pallikarnai

Our Future

We are not inheriting this planet from our grandfathers, we are borrowing it from our children. Our volunteers have been engaging kids, families, schools and study groups indrawing competitions to create awareness on ocean pollution caused by our ever growing toxic garbage dump. If you know of any groups which would be interested to participate then please let us know.

Awareness through Performance

Our volunteers are now shying away from public performances to educate our fellow citizens on the harmful impact of plastics and garbage on the environment and our own health. Our members started rehearsing dance steps lead by professional choreographers through Flashmobs and Streetplays. Just like last year our colleagues from the Bharathi Scouts will perform a MIME. We are also calling out to Bloggers to help us spreading our message! Not part of the action yet? It's not too late yet to sign up!

Learning

Over the past several weeks hundreds of members have attended various green workshops to learn about many easy ways to live more sustainable. More workshops are in the pipeline....

Organic Farming by Kannan from ePagemaker
Sustainable Living by reStore and Ritambhara

Experience

There is no better way to learn then through hands-on experience. Hundreds of our members, families and kids have visited on CTC's Organic Farm near Arakkonam in the past two months to work, volunteer and learn about ways to grow our own green food. Visits will continue to be organized every 2-3 weeks throughout the year.

Awareness

To defeat your enemy you must know your enemy. Modern day society has packed us all up in plastic wrappers, polythene covers, paper cups and straws, many of these use-and-throw items have an average useful lifespan of a few seconds to a few minutes before they get disposed in the environment and poison our own health. Our CCC team has been busy visualizing many interesting facts about plastic and its impact through various Did You Know posters and Quiz questions.

Say NO to cups and bottles

To fight the battle against the never ending stream of millions of paper cups and use-and-throw water bottles which we use every day and directly throw away, polluting our environment CTC's creative team has made some beautiful mug and stainless steel bottle designs which you ll be able to order soon with your name and CCC/CTC logo and a strong visual message to create awareness among your colleagues and friends.

Motion Pictures

CTC's creative team has been busy shooting and editing a number of videos to create awareness:

Recycling & Plastic Free Shopping

Team CCC is creating an exhaustive list of local neighborhood recycle shops across the city to connect our members interested to reduce their garbage footprint at home through segregation. At the input side we are also preparing a list of plastic free stores where you can buy your groceries naturally without generating waste. Interested to go green at your own home? Join us here.

Be part of the change

Feeling excited about all the above? Wanna actively contribute towards a greener future and be part of the lead volunteer team which is driving mission CCC? You can join us every Wednesday 7:15pm at ePagemaker, Thirunvanmyur to drive the change!

Do you know how many trees have been cut down to produce the paper cups?

Do you know very minimal percentages of paper cups were recycled and rest of them are disposed in landfill due the contamination?

How many of us know about the wax medium which is used in paper cups to avoid the leakage of liquids?

How many of us aware that we are drinking the melted wax along with the hot tea/coffee while using paper cups?

In the name of Hygienic we are drinking liquids in a non healthier material and damaging our health

Why do you still drink water/tea/coffee in wax coated paper cups and plastic cups ? Be the change for the environment cause and also to care your health.

How many of us are ready to carry our own mug to drink Tea/Coffee?

Don’t we like to drink the Tea/Coffee in our own mug along with name?

We would also like to introduce CTC Tea,Coffee Mugs to promote #NoPlasticChallenge as part of the Chennai Coastal Clean-up awareness campaign. Say NO to Paper/Plastic Cups.

It will be amazing to see the environmental impact by using the reusable cups in the place of Paper cup for 1 year. Thanks Earth Recyler ( Official Recycling Partner of Chennai Coastal Clean-up team ) for deriving the values.

Stopped using 108 gallons of water -> 408 litres from processing for generating paper cups
1 lbs of air pollution prevented from being released
0.1 cubic yards of landfill space saved
63 kWh of electricity. That's enough to power the average home for 2 days

Cost of the Mug would come around 200 to 230 rupees.

It will be delivered to your Address.

The change is in your hands now. Let's decide.

Thanks

Chennai Coastal Cleanup 2015 - Role Models - Part 1

In this "Role Models" series of the #ChennaiCoastalCleanup we are sharing some mostinspirational stories with you from neighborhoods, companies, individuals with you who are the change:

The #CleanKotturpuramCampaign 2015

Over the past year, our frustration at the sight of the streets in our neighborhood has been feverishly increasing. We spent many months talking to the corporation sweeper, the supervisor, and so on. But the streets remained littered with paper cups, and plastic trash, the corporation bin overflowed with garbage every single day, and to top it all, piles and piles of construction debris and garden cuttings were spread all over our (otherwise lovely) neighborhood. Meenakshi visited Harrington Road and discovered that the residents in that area had taken matters into their own hands, and were ensuring that the household & other neighborhood waste was well managed. They assured us that the corporation of Chennai was largely supportive of Citizen’s efforts in this direction, as long as the involvement from the community was there.

So after many discussions, we launched our ‘Clean Kotturpuram Campaign’ on the auspicious occasion of Republic Day, Jan 26th, 2015. We created flyers to talk about waste segregation, and also planned that we would do some cleaning activity ourselves. We were pleasantly surprised to meet ~30 of our neighbors, many of who were unknown to us (and vice versa). We attacked a particularly egregious street corner that day, and were, to say the least, ‘over enthusiastic’ in our efforts. We unearthed years of debris that was causing much detriment to soil quality. We trimmed some wild growing plants. We cleared the area of trash. While the before and after pictures don’t show a stark difference, what we learnt about waste management, segregation, the centuries long impact poor practices can have on mother earth, not to mention the human angle related to our sweepers and Solid Waste Management workers, was HUGE!

Since that day, we have regularized a Sunday morning street cleaning schedule. It is understood that we will tackle various streets/street corners in our little neck of the city (6 roads; ~100 households, ~250 adults), in turn. We formed a whatsapp group of enthusiastic individuals that we use to make announcements and have discussions. We have trekked over the entire place, visiting every single household (taking turns of course), and spoken to anyone willing to listen, about waste management, segregation, and the importance of binding together as a community. We have now formed an informal resident’s association, and elected various office bearers to help in its functioning.  We have close contacts with the Corporation officials at all levels, and the supervisors just need a day’s notice to mobilise their workers and send their trucks to us to help us in our street cleaning activity. They are also open-minded in listening to the larger plans we have in mind – ultimately, we aspire to be a Zero Waste community, which contributes NOTHING to the municipal land-fill. Of course the first step towards this is clear and precise segregation of wet and dry waste, and further into recyclables, non-recyclable trash, sanitary & medical waste, and not to mention e-waste. We have on speed-dial the various agencies in Chennai involved in recycling, and are working out various solutions through them. Although many households are practicing composting now (using either large garden pits or the Terracota Pots), we also are in discussions to make this a community-wide effort to obtain maximum benefit. We hope to get this, and much more done in the coming months/years!

Much of this in the future. Right now, we are fondly referred to as the “Kuppai Ladies” though we have many men (and several children!) join us in our efforts. We have provided bags at convenient locations for the various people who choose our neighborhood for tea-drinking purposes, to dispose of the tea-cups (‘cause they WILL NOT walk to the trash can, how much ever we beseech them, they will fling them on the pavement – of course our next step will be convince them to move to steel tumblers!). We have allocated a day a week for Garden Waste collection (it requires a larger SWM truck to stop by), and requested households to indulge in their garden activity only on Thursdays. We have blisters and calluses on our palms to show for the various corners we have cleared of generations of trash and leveled out. Perhaps as a result, public urinators now by and large avoid our neighborhood! We have convinced the authorities to provide replacements for our horribly broken street corner garbage bins. We have nearly the entire community behind us, many of them (young and old), participating on Sundays despite the heat & humidity, in email discussions in our group, and in association meetings. The corporation workers, particularly the women, are our friends and work with us happily.

These pictures tell only part of the story, as most of us are wary of touching our  phones while in the midst of the cleaning! We invite all of you to come join us every Sunday at 7:30am – the exact venue is announced on facebook close to the date. Moreover, we hope that you feel encouraged to tackle the important matter of waste management, including source segregation!

Here are some photos from our neighborhood activity

The corner of Valliammai Achi  & Gandhi Mandapam Roads, is being dumped with all nature of trash – including a whole stack of tube-lights! (May, 2015).

This spot used to be among the worst in our neighborhood, with this solitary trash can receiving garbage from far and wide, seemingly. Arunachalam Road, Feb 2015

An earlier photo from the same offending corner. Arunachalam Road, Jan 2015

“Mooh Bandh, Kaam Chaalu’ we say! As we join forces to sweep, segregate, level and get the garbage carted away!

We were very excited to clear out this patch (which was really ugly before), and to plant Nochi Plants here. Arunachalam Road, May 2015

Another usually very offensive corner is on Ambadi Road. We strived hard to get the corner to this state one fine Sunday, by separating out all plastic and paper trash!  Ambadi Road, Apr 2015

CHENNAI COASTAL CLEANUP 2015 - ROLE MODELS - PART II

In this "Role Models" series of the #ChennaiCoastalCleanup we are sharing some most inspirational stories with you from neighborhoods, companies, individuals with you who are the change:

Single Email from an employee (CTCian) shut downed Paper Cup Usage

It’s all about the taking our first step towards the actions. Being a CTCians, we believe “98% of the people always speak and rest of the 2% act”. We never wait for someone to take the action and follow it. Here is the action/story taken by one of our proud CTCian Vignesh, who has taken an initiative in his workplace to avoid the Paper Cup usage.
He is one among the 10 participants who has taken the #NoPlasticChallenge. In turn started implementing lot in his personal life. Vignesh works in a small company where 30-40 employees are working.  Being aware of the impacts of drinking Coffee/Tea in Paper Cups and its Wax Coating, he initiated an Email conversation to his Senior Manager of his company. Within two days he got a positive response from his Manager and in another two days they have distributed the Ceramic reusable, ecofriendly cups to all the employees.

The small step made a huge impact. Think about the small math below.
No of Employees – 30
No of Tea/Coffee consumption by the employee per day – 3
No of cups used per day – 30 * 3 = 90
No of cups used per month – 90 * 20 = 1800
No of cups used per Year – 1800 * 12 = 21,600

Think about the environmental impact and how the small initiative has avoided paper cups being used. Be the change what we want to see in the world.

Are you ready to talk to your employer to stop using Paper cups? Be the change what do you want to see!

Composting in Velachery TCS office by “Aram Seiya Virumbu”

Group of families who found the same interest and spirit among themselves and stated involving in many social activities along with their kids. Here are the words from Mr.Damodharan, Founder of “Aram Seiya Virumbu” team. This all started with a small family walk to Nagalapuram. We found the energy among our kids and also to leave behind something for the next generation. Then we participated in the Beach cleaning activity organized by CTC. Our thought further strengthened. The kids are happy and at the same time completing the task with ease.
Then we thought of a monthly activity for the kids to know outside TV and films. Fault is not with them, we never exposed them to the beautiful outside world. This time we went for seed bed preparation for saplings at Velachery.

Then we thought about the oldest business models of mankind. Pot making, Harvesting and family food. Kids enjoyed like anything.
Now the team is inching towards nature, we are inspired by Ainthinai, Nizhal and wanted to do tree plantation. It’s new and with the help of Masanamuthu, Siva, Elancheyian, Team Magesh (CREW) and Shoba (Nizhal). We have done the tree plantation at Ponmar. We got the place from the Panchayat. We want to do the plantation with school kids. They are the front runners for the next generation.
When we heard close to 5000 tonnes of degradable waste generated each day in Chennai. Out of which major portion comes from individual homes. Visited Pammal and met Mr.Indrakumar and also Ms.Mangalam Balasubramanian. We have to take this to the public and only around 250 gms of kitchen waste they have to compost. Individually we are doing at home and as a next level we want to do more so we can use it for the trees and also prevent the waste from reaching the dumb yard. It is indeed a very small step. We started with the food supplier for our staff and collected around 25 kg of vegetable waste every day. Then we approached the small restaurants, tea shops and sugar cane vendors in MGR Salai and collected around 20 to 25 kg a day. With this now we collected close to 3000 kg of vegetable waste.

We thought of reaching the next level and approached the admin of TCS Velachery. He was more than happy to be part of it and informed their juice shop at the canteen to provide the fruit waste.

From Software engineer to Nammaboomi - Arul Priya

A wonderful initiative from a Ex-Software Engineer Arul Priya. Let’s hear the words from her.

I quit my job after my second boy born to come out of 9 hrs IT job. Sitting at home with 3 months baby, my mind went through several thoughts .One of the thoughts were "WHY MY WASTE IS GOING IN PLASTIC COVER". This thought paved the path to learn about composting and found "WASTE HAS ITS OWN VALUE"..I learnt that cow cant differentiate  between the smell of watermelon peels and Plastic covers which leads to ingestion of plastic covers .It’s really created an impact on me and made me to find alternative for Plastics..The first alternative I found was Areca palm plates, alternative for thermocole plates which were used in our community. The search of Palm Plate gave me an intro to Geetha who was running a Palm plate unit and our similar thoughts and Passion gave birth to Nammaboomi. I was able to explain the impact of thermocole on human health as well as the environment and successfully changed the plates from thermocole to Palm in our temple.

Nammaboomi's three step process to slowly bid adieu to plastics

  1. By kicking off used plastics to its quick dead zone (recycling units) i.e., by disposing plastics in a safe way so that they are recycled instead of adding up to landfills.
  2. By reducing usage of plastics.
  3. By using bio-degradable alternatives in place of plastics wherever possible, ultimately it will help us to lead a “Zero Waste” life.
The use of Plastics in our day to day life is indispensable. From cell phones to computers to artificial hearts to tooth brushes.  We are surrounded by it. Plastic is strong and durable and should be made for things that need to last a long time like tires, computers even Currency. But plastics Should NOT be for “disposable” things that are used for a minute or two and then thrown away-- Plastic carry bags, water bottles, Paper/Plastic cups, Styro-foam /paper plates.

This throw-away culture generates disgusting amounts of plastic waste which ends up in landfills. And this filling of land with plastics lead to air, water pollution resulting in various life threatening diseases such as cancer Plastics also endanger life of animals pollute environment and the complete eco-system.

Nammaboomi proposes
  • An alternative to non eco-friendly virgin paper products by promoting 100% environment friendly ,100% recycled paper stationary products, made from 100% post-consumer waste
  • An alternative to wooden pencils by promoting 100% recycled pencils made from 100% post consumer newspaper.
  • An alternative to Plastic bags by promoting and encouraging using and reusing cloth bags.
  • An alternative to thermocole plate and paper plate by promoting 100% biodegradable and healthy palm plates.
  • An alternative to Plastic spoons by promoting 100% biodegradable, healthy and edible Jowar spoons.
  • An alternative to Plastic water bottles by promoting 100% safe stainless steel water bottle. An alternative to sanitary napkins by promoting 100% healthy and environment friendly reusable cloth pads.

We would also like to introduce CTC Stainless Steel Bottles to promote #NoPlasticChallenge as part of the Chennai Coastal Clean-up awareness campaign. Say NO to Plastic bottles.

Do you want to carry your own Stainless Steel Water Bottle?

Do you want to carry water in a hygienic container?

Are you want to be part of this awareness campaign on #NoPlasticChallenge by purchasing CTC Stainless Steel Water Bottle?

Do you want to be one of the reasons of polluting the environment by purchasing use and throw type PET water bottles?

Do you know the chemicals used to manufacture the PET bottles?

Do you know the plastic material/Chemicals dissolves in water which we drink?

Do you know out of 5 PET bottles, only one is recycled and rest is thrown into landfill?

Sincere Thanks to Mr.Elanchezhiyan for his great interest on introducing Stainless Steel Water Bottles in CTC and his effort on identifying the vendor for bottles and designer.

The Human Impact:

Plastic bottles contain Bisphenol A (BPA), the chemical used to make the plastic hard and clear. BPA is an endocrine disruptor
which has been proven to be hazardous to human health. It has been strongly linked to a host of health problems including certain types of cancer, neurological difficulties, early puberty in girls, and reduced fertility in women, premature labor, and defects in newborn babies – to name a few examples. BPA enters the human body through exposure to plastics such as bottled drinks and cleaning products. It has been found in significant amounts in at-risk groups such as pregnant women’s placentas and growing foetuses.

Tons of Waste:

Only 1 out of 5 plastic water bottles are recycled contributing to the 3 billion pounds (1,500,000 tons) of plastic bottle waste per year (c’mon people. Who doesn’t recycle nowadays???). Further, the PET 1 bottles cannot be cleaned properly and over time can leech plastic components into the water so it is not recommended that they be reused. PET bottles never really biodegradable and if they are incinerated instead they release toxic fumes.

The change is in your hands now. Let's decide. Get urs soon and get rid of those use and throw PET Water bottles.

Five Things You Shouldn’t Be Missing Out In Chennai Coastal Cleanup 6

$
0
0
As we gear up for the 6th edition of the Chennai Coastal Cleanup, here are the top five initiatives from our team that you shouldn’t miss trying out this season.

Chennaiites have been restlessly checking out alternatives to reduce plastic in everyday life by taking up this 5 day challenge to stop dumping waste from their homes. An idea initiated by a few CTC volunteers, #NoPlasticChallenge highlights the need to reduce, reuse and recycle alongside source segregation and composting. The challenge encourages the use of traditional cloth bags, reusable bottles, explore alternatives for daily use disposables and opt for eco-friendly living. When exposed to heat, different kinds of plastics start releasing the toxic dioxins in our environment, depending on their thickness. If you’re one of those guilty of dumping plastics into your bin, here is your time to take up#NoPlasticChallenge. Every one minute, 1 million plastic bags are used, but less than 1% of that is recycled. Are you ready to take up #NoPlasticChallenge?

Inspiration – An Indian village, Mawlynnong  in East Khasi hills in Meghalaya is the cleanest village in Asia.  The entire village has been following a zero waste lifestyle for more than a decade. With the Asia’s cleanest village in our own country, what other inspiration do we require for a zero waste lifestyle?

It’s always easier to segregate waste at its source, than from a landfill. Source segregation is a well-known practice of separating your organic and inorganic waste. This also makes the work easier for recyclers. In a major step to spread awareness on the recycling of plastics, CCC6 Team has come up with Plastic Mela on 30-May, 31-May in Chennai. All you would need to do is to separate your thin plastics (wash the plastics used for food packaging), thick plastics and cardboard boxes/papers and fill this. Way ahead – CCC6 Team has been working on a recycler network/Kabadiwala connect based on your inputs and the details of the Kabadiwala near you can be filled by clicking here. The collected polythene and other recyclable materials would be recycled through Earth Recycler, CCC6's Official Recycling Partner.

Other options to reach out for online recycler support include:
For daily use plastics/other scrap - PapermanKuppathotti, Hand in Hand NGO
e-waste recycling – SIMS recycling solutionsPaperman

While Plastic Mela is just a weekend event to raise awareness on recycling, CCC6 Team is also inviting corporates and residential areas/colonies/apartments to work with recyclers and come up with a Long term Solid waste Management system of their own. Chennai has been rated as one of the top cities to reside in with respect to safety and the living conditions. However, waste Management is an issue with every other residential area in Chennai with the city generating 5000 tonnes of garbage every day. Change is in your hands, and if your apartment/residential colony/corporate office is interested to come up with a Solid Waste Management plan, do fill this form for partnering with recyclers. In a major step to avoid plastics in daily use, CCC6 team has also identified a few stores who offer plastic free packaging on groceries.
Collaboration with Clean Chennai - Clean Chennai is an anti-litter campaign by the Corporation of Chennai and collaborates with various groups to pass on the message to stop littering and come up with a Waste management solution.
Few other role models – Exnora Green PammalClean Kotturpuram CampaignNizhal
The only way to conserve our environment is to stop thinking that someone else will do it for us.  It’s our world that we are a part of; let’s do our every bit to keep it clean. Start with your own colony!

4. Go Plastic free with CCC Coffee Mugs and Stainless Steel Bottles

While you read this post, approximately 1,50,000 disposable are making their way towards a landfill every second. In a country with a population of a few billions, each one of the billion seems to think  what difference usage of a single plastic/paper cup would make, and so billions of cups make their way to landfills. Paper cups are often misunderstood to be a bio-degradable and an environmentally friendly option for plastics. But, what many people do not know is that these cups are coated with wax/plastic to prevent leakage will slow down the decomposition process. Are you still one of those drinking teas in paper cups, juices in plastic cups? Here ‘s your chance to upgrade to a ceramic Coffee Mug with your name on it by filling out this form
Over 842 crore passengers use Indian Railways every year and a statistics suggests that a staggering 342 crore plastic bottles are sold every year in IRCTC travel alone. Bihar is the first Indian state to stop usage of bottled water in government offices. It takes just 3 minutes to drink bottled water but it takes 600 years for the bottle to decompose. When there is an alternative to use a reusable water bottle and opt for a refill, why can’t we go with that? If you are willing to upgrade to a stainless steel bottle, all you will need to do is to fill this form and wait for the bottle to arrive after payment.
An Alternative for bottled water – AmrutDhara is a social enterprise that has been working on installation of water refill stations/vending machines in public places to improve access to safe drinking water. They operate in multiple public places and sell water at Rs. 3 per litre for refill in Pondicherry. Talks are on set up mobile kiosks in Tamil Nadu and Karanataka in many public places.

5. Awareness drive and Younger generation Connect

Like our Facebook page Chennai Coastal Cleanup and watch out for our daily quiz, Did you Know series, Promo videos and much more. That’s not all of it, a huge number of volunteers have put on their dancing shoes for the Flash mobs, artists are out in streets for Mimes and Street plays. Watch out for them as convey the harmful impacts of plastics through their performances.

CCC6 team is also actively engaging with children through Drawing competitions and Story-telling sessions to make them aware of the need to conserve the marine life and keep the environment clean. Children are born with a sense of wonder and an affinity for Nature. Properly cultivated, these values can mature into ecological literacy and eventually into sustainable patterns of living. What’s more fun than volunteering with the younger generation and getting amazed by their creativity. If interested to volunteer, please register here and be prepared to face the inquisitive minds as they shoot out the questions J
Way ahead – CTC Ainthinai (Green wing of CTC) organizes Family camping cum Tree Plantation and Maintenance events in Thenneri, Arakonam and few other areas. Interested could register & volunteer in the green events by checking the events posted in FB group Lets Grow Our own Oxygen.

Nizhal also organizes tree walks for students in order to create awareness of the role of trees, planting the right kind of trees and maintaining them. Thanks to the Nizhal volunteers, a dump-yard in Kottupuram is now a beautiful tree park, where tree walks happen very frequently.

The previous two editions of Chennai Coastal Cleanup saw collection and recycling of over 3.3 tonnes of plastics, 4.3tonnes of Shoes/Slippers, 2.5 tonnes of liquors bottles, 476 Kg of Thermocole and 98 Kgs of metal cans, thus saving 27.8 MWh of energy and over 3, 00,000 liters of water. Also, the plastics collected in Chennai Coastal Cleanup 5 were used for laying Plastic roads in Madambakkam. This year, we have an ambitious target to collect 50+ tons of waste along the 20km stretch of Chennai Coastline. Do join us on 7-Jun to clean up the Chennai Coastline by registering here - individuals & group registrations. As a part of India Clean Sweep, few NGOs have teamed up with us for a cleanup drive on the same date in 12 other cities/towns.

We clean up the beaches every year, however the one day cleanup activity is not a magic wand to clear up the 50 tonnes of waste that Chennai generates every day. We appeal to everyone to understand their responsibility towards environment and take a conscious effort in segregating and managing their waste for a better tomorrow. This is not just a one day event but the beginning of a lifestyle change.

Hoping to see you on 7-Jun-2015 to be a part of our history.

Thanks,
Bloggers Team,

News & Media

Chennai Coastal Cleanup and our initiative #NoPlasticChallenge have been featured in various blogs and other news and media articles over the past weeks. An wonderful article published by folomojo staff Ryan Frantz have gone viral over facebook in the past 4 days. Within 4 days of publishing it has been shared by a whooping 20k people and by the time the number is still increasing. Read the full article here.

Another thoughtful article written by Sandhya Sourirajan on #NoPlasticChallenge has been published in TheAlternative.in - India's largest magazine on promoting sustainable living. Read the full article here.

Awareness thro Wall Painting

Our creative team volunteers from CTC have been indulged in putting their creative brain to work by painting arts on the walls around Chennai Beaches. Thanks to our CTC volunteer Karmuhilan Chellakkannu who has pulled off this wonderful wall painting at Thiruvanmiyur beach. Dont forget to have a look at this masterpiece when you pass by thiruvanmiyur beach. Over the next few days our volunteers in coordination with The Paint Box team will be filling up several other walls around Chennai beaches with their creative ideas, on spreading awareness about keeping our shores clean.

#NoPlasticChallenge

After several weeks of spreading awareness in social media about over usage of plastics in our daily life, its time to take #NoPlasticChallenge to the next level. Our volunteers have involved in educating local street vendors about how plastics affect our environment. Most of the vendors have been open minded and receptive about our thoughts and agreed to put up awareness poster in their shops, which urges their customers to use glass/steel tumblers instead of use & throw plastic items.

Awareness to Kids

"As a child, one has that magical capacity to move among the many eras of the earth; to see the land as an animal does; to experience the sky from the perspective of a flower or a bee; to feel the earth quiver and breathe beneath us; to know a hundred different smells of mud and listen unself- consciously to the soughing of the trees." - Valerie Andrews, A Passion for this Earth.

Our volunteers have actively engaged in spreading awareness about our eco-system and the need to maintain it through various events for kids in and around chennai. Last week our volunteers did a painting event for kids in Nochikuppam with the theme of sea and the animals that live in and how we humans are actively endangering their livelihood by polluting our shores. Several others events are in plan for the coming week, do watch out our ChennaiCoastalCleanup page for more updates.

Clean Chennai

As a major boost for Chennai Coastal Cleanup team, Clean Chennai has came forward to work together with us in order to spread the message about solid waste management to a wider range of audience. Clean Chennai is an initiative of Chennai corporation to catalyse a city-wide shift in chennai citizens attitude towards solid waste segregation and management. CCC6 is now part of the event calendar of Clean Chennai. The Chennai Trekking Club and Corporation of Chennai will be collaborating together to make the 6th edition of Chennai Coastal Cleanupmore impactful than ever before.

Segregation/Recycling at Source Level

This year as part of CCC6 we are taking an step forward in spreading the message across. We have teamed up with Earth Recyler Pvt. Ltd. in order to implement a proper waste management cum recycling system in place at your office premises.

Please get in touch with us if you are interested to implement the same. We will fix up an appointment to discuss on this further.

Already some of the registered organizations have came forward to implement this and talks are on with them regarding logistics and infrastructure availabilities. Join the elite group of companies who are soon gonna be 'Zero Waste Organizations' who send nothing to the garbage dumpyards in and around Chennai.

Plastic Mela

Even though we try to avoid single use plastics in our daily life, there are certain items which we cant (soap wrapper, oil packets and other masala items to name a few). These are thin plastics which cant even be sent to recycling shops. So, why not collect them and send them to lay tar roads instead of sending them to dumpyards and spoiling our environment.

Plastic mela is an initiative by CCC team, which is intended to bring a huge awareness among common people towards recycling
plastics. Most of us aren't really aware of what thin plastic and thick plastic is. It's really high time to spread the awareness about plastics and importantly recycling the plastic wastes ( Thin and Thick ).
Refer this post for more details on this initiative and how you can effectively contribute towards this.

#NoPlasticChallenge

What started of as a small initiative by CCC team with 5 people has now became viral over facebook with more and more people completing the challenge everyday and nominating 5 of their friends to take it up. So far more then 750 members have completed the #NoPlasticChallenge, a 5 day challenge to eliminate the use of every-day plastics and adapt a more sustainable lifestyle. Deccan chronicle has published an article on our #NoPlasticChallenge initiative and how college students have actively and very passionately taken this challenge in spreading the awareness among their friends.

Are you ready to take up the challenge ? Register your details here.

CCC6 Initiative - CTC Stainless Steel Water Bottles

To fight the battle against the never ending stream of millions of plastic water bottles which we use every day and directly throw away, polluting our environment CTC's creative team has made some beautiful Stainless Steel Bottles designs which you will be able to order soon with CCC/CTC logo and a strong visual message to create awareness among your colleagues and friends.

We would also like to introduce CTC Stainless Steel Bottles to promote #NoPlasticChallenge as part of the ChennaiCoastal Clean-up awareness campaign. Say NO to Plastic bottles.

Cost: Rs.250-270/- (Exact amount will be shared with the registered volunteers)

Role Models

"Role Models" is an initiative by CCC team in order to spread awareness to public about being the change themselves instead of waiting for a change. In this series of posts we will be writing about inspiring individuals/communities whom instead of complaining on government and other factors, for the state of our surroundings, believed in being the change themselves and are following it. First post of this series was shared this week, which is on the famous#CleanKotturpuramCampaign

#CleanKotturpuramCampaign is an initiative by people living the neighbourhood area of Kotturpuram in order to become a zero waste community. They launched their campaign on 26th of Jan 2015. Every sunday morning they schedule to clean up an area in their neighborhood. An area which has been accumulated with much of garbage over several years.

Their aspiration is to become a zero waste community which will contribute nothing to the dump yards in and around Chennai.

Complete post on this campaign can be found here and they can be followed over facebook facebook.com/CleanKotturpuramCampaign.

More posts will follow in the coming weeks on role models who are living amongst us.

Spreading Awareness through Performance

Our volunteers are spending their weekends practicing dance steps to use public performances as a medium to educate our fellow citizens on the harmful impact of plastics and garbage on our environment and our own health.

Spreading Awareness to Our Future :

"A Child more than anyone is a spontaneous observer of nature" - Maria Montessori.

Children are born with a sense of wonder and an affinity for Nature. Properly cultivated, these values can mature into ecological literacy and eventually into sustainable patterns of living. CCC team is actively engaging kids in awareness events in and around Chennai, educating them about how us humans are spoiling the environment, marine life, etc.

If interested to join our volunteers in the upcoming kids awareness event, please do register here. A word of caution, register only if you have the dare to face the questions that you will receive from these kids :)
