To recycle and reuse maximum garbage collected we will be segregating garbage in three main categories. Familiarize yourself with each of these:

  • 1. Glass Bottles : (Alcohol Bottles, Broken Glass pieces, Broken Glass bottles, Glass Medicinal Bottles and other Glass Items)
  • 2. Recyclables   : (All polythene wrappers, Carry Bags, PET Bottles, Plastic Containers, Water Pockets, Thermocol, Milk Covers, Shoes, Slippers, Papers, Card-boards and all kind of Plastic materials)
  • 3. Others          : (Fishing Nets, Styrofoam, flowers, Co-count shells, Organic Wastes, Cloths, wooden scraps, ropes and anything not covered in the above two categories)

FAQ
1. Why do we have this classification of garbage into three categories

There is one and only one reason -To recycle and reuse the garbage collected.
To enable recycling to the maximum extent, source segregation is the key and hence the classification.

2. Do I pick the garbage with my bare hands?

No way will we let you do that. You will be given one glove (Not a pair. Optimum utilization you see! ). Wear it before you pick up anything.

3. How do I collect the garbage I pick?

Step 1: Choose a partner

Step 2: Collect a re-usable collecting bag from your coordinator

Step 3: Share the bag with your partner and start picking garbage. Teamwork :)

4. Do I collect glass bottles with the same gloves? Won’t it hurt?

You have a valid point! You cannot collect glass bottles with the thin gloves. So if you are assigned the category one, then ensure that you get the separate thick gloves to pick glass and a separate jute bag to collect.

5. What do I do when my bag is full?

Collection points will be assigned for your zone of which your coordinator will inform you about. A volunteer will be stationed at the point to guide you.
If you are collecting glass, just leave the filled up bag at the collection point and get a new bag.
If you are collecting plastics or others, dump them into the big bags kept at the collection points and resume your work with the emptied bag.

6. What happens to the collected garbage?

Ok now you are getting to the point! This is the question we love to answer.
As we already said, our mission is to recycle the maximum (We recycled 80% of the 50 ton garbage that we picked up last year). So all the piles of garbage mounted at the collection points will be loaded onto trucks.  The recyclables – glass and plastics – will be taken to the recycling yard of our official recycling partner EARTH RECYCLER, where it would be recycled. ( We have been contributing to the Madambakkam panchayat to lay plastic roads)
The others category waste will be sent to the dump yard of the Chennai Corporation where it will be let to decompose.

7. Do you guys sell the garbage? Are you guys earning money from our efforts?

We wish we could make some money (Just kidding). The truth is No. We are not selling the garbage.
It costs us way too much to arrange for the event, the transportation and all other necessary items. We make hardly anything to cover-up these expenses. All these years we have managed the show only with the support of our sponsors and patrons. As we would like to put it, this is not a business; it’s a team effort to bring about some self-realization to the people.

8. What will you guys do if you get money out of the garbage this year?

Party?!?! Ha ha.. Without any doubt, the collections would be directed towards next year’s cleanup.

9. Seriously! What do you guys get out of this event?

The satisfaction that we tried. That we made a difference. That we were able to start a change.

Catch The Wave As The Countdown Begins For One Of The Biggest Cleanup Activities In Chennai Coastline

$
0
0

What began as a movement to clean up Tada with 150 CTC volunteers in 2009 to promote ‘Eco-tourism’, has now taken the shape of one of the biggest volunteer-driven cleanup activities in the Chennai Coastline. As more hands joined this initiative, these cleanup activities made their way to the beautiful beaches of Chennai along a 15km coastal stretch from Marina till Injambakkam, markingthe first edition of Chennai Coastal Cleanup (CCC) in 2010.

From then on, with every passing year, the movement has gained momentum, with volunteers covering the entire stretch of Chennai coastline, segregating, recycling the waste, exploring alternatives for plastics and taking a conscious effort to reducing the garbage footprint.

There are plastics everywhere from the landfill in your own street to the beautiful blue beaches. There are continents of floating garbage in the massive oceans. A whopping 6 million straws were collected in CCC5 in just few hours of cleaning up.These plastics are polluting the deep seas, killing the turtles and fishes, poisoning the birds and messing up our environment. One of the first of a kind initiatives of CCC - ‘#NoPlasticChallenge’ challenged Chennaiites to avoid plastic usage and to encourage reduce, re-use and recycle.

With a huge response to the #NoPlasticChallenge this year, next proposal was to invite interested residential colonies, apartments and corporates to set up their own long term Solid waste Management system by partnering with recyclers. To limit the waste landing into sewers and landfills, a Kabadiwala connect was needed, and an online form was shared in Social media for gathering information to create a local recycle shop network. The team also organized a weekend event to arrange doorstep collection of segregated thin/thick plastics and cardboards on 30-May, 31-May.

Every year has been a new learning experience for the team, starting from mere collection of waste in 2009 to progress to a stage where they perform waste segregation at the time of collection followed by recycling of the waste.

There have been some trend-setting collaborations with recyclers in the recent editions of the cleanup. The previous two editions of Chennai Coastal Cleanup saw collection and recycling of over 3.3 tonnes of plastics, 4.3 tonnes of Shoes/Slippers, 2.5 tonnes of liquors bottles, 476 Kg of Thermocole and 98 Kgs of metal cans, thus saving 27.8 MWh of energy and over 3, 00,000 liters of water. That’s not all of it, the thin plastics collected in CCC5 were used for laying plastic roads in Madambakkam, a locality in Chennai.

A number of volunteers from Chennai Dive Club, Temple Adventures (Pondicherry) and Coastal Security group scuba-dived for an underwater cleanup in CCC4 and CCC5 to remove the nylon fishing nets and the marine debris.

In 2012, the group made it to the Limca book of Records with a National record of fastest garbage cleaning with a collection of 17.6 tonnes of garbage in a 15km stretch of Chennai coast.
Chennai Trekking Club is the brains behind this massive cleanup effort every year. This movement has seen a spontaneous splurge in the volunteer count with more people joining up to assist with the logistics and event planning in the last 6 years. Many corporates and NGOs have joined hands have supported this movement with each edition of the cleanup. Last year, this movement spread its wings with 10 other Indian cities joining this movement under the name ‘India Clean Sweep’. 2014 edition of CCC5 & India Clean Sweep involved 6200 volunteers from 150 Corporates, NGOs, colleges, schools and individuals and the total garbage collected was 50 tonnes.  The 2015 edition of India Clean Sweep will be carried out in 12 Indian cities.
CCC6 Team has gone an extra mile this year to generate awareness about harmful effects of plastic disposal this year to prevent them making their way to landfills and beaches. From street plays, wall paintings, story-telling sessions, flash-mobs, posters, drawing competition for kids and younger generation connect, the team has put in every possible effort to generate awareness on plastics and the need for waste management.

Many volunteers have worked behind the screens in poster design, putting in every possible information in the form of daily quiz, ‘Did you know’ posts, promotional videos and much more on the Chennai Coastal Clean Facebook page. The organizing team has designed a stainless steel reusable water bottle and ceramic coffee mug as a move to prevent a huge number of disposable plastic bottles, cups and wax coated paper cups making their way to landfills. The group has also identified mobile kiosks/water vending machines in public places as an alternative for bottled water.

Few volunteers have also interacted with juice shop and food stall owners, by suggesting them a few alternatives for disposables to go litter-free in their business. Some juice stall owners now have CCC6 posters on their stall to raise awareness to avoid disposables.

Chennai generates 50 tonnes of garbage every day. From the first coastal cleanup in 2010 with 880 volunteers and collection of 8.9 tons of garbage, the team has marched on in the fight against plastics by amassing 50 tonnes in 2014 edition of India Clean Sweep/CCC5. There is yet another ambitious target this year to meet. Wish our team all the luck and do share the post to send a strong message of environmental awareness to our society to preserve our natural inheritances in and around our polluted metros.

An anti-littering revolution has begun. Catch the wave as the countdown begins for one of the biggest Clean up activities along the coastline.

CHENNAI COASTAL CLEANUP 2015 - ROLE MODELS - PART III

In this "Role Models" series of the #ChennaiCoastalCleanup we are sharing some most inspirational stories with you from neighborhoods, companies, individuals with you who are the change:

Ever wondered where “FOOD” comes from?
The origin of food?
The travel it made to reach us?
The people involved in production?
Food shapes cities, and through them, it molds us – along with the countryside that feeds us.
Our ancestors never took food for granted. The bond between man and grain dominated life in the ancient city, with festivals that mirrored the agricultural calendar.

“We are what we eat” said and done by great men. But do we eat what we really need to?
As civilization is city centric it is hardly surprising that we have inherited a lopsided view of urban- rural relationship.
The need for the hour is to REFRESH ourselves. To go back to past and to reconnect with what we were years back. F5 Green is an organization which makes us to refresh, reconnect and revive the urban – rural relationship. A relationship which needs to be re-looked and to be understood to realize what molds us.
We find “ORGANIC here …and ORGANIC there…” but have we ever wondered what it really means? Why organic?

The mission of F5 green answers to all the questions that run in our minds.
Mission of F5 Green:
1.     5 R’s Strategy: Refresh, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Reconnect
2.     Farm to farm concept
3.     Bring-in cost effective, new technologies in farming methods
4.     Promote Public Participation and emphasis on Women Empowerment
5.     Sustainable Farming Solution ,Training and on-farm consultancy services
6.     Unite & motivate the farmers to switch-over to Organic Farming
7.     Identifying potential lands for organic cultivation
8.     Create Seed Banks & Farmers Network to share the seeds & knowledge
9.     Create water sheds in rain-fed/arid farming regions
10.   Promotes locally produced and seasonal food

F5 Green develops a platform to create a Sustainable Farming Solution that Connects Farm & Home in order to provide a balanced opening for improving the livelihood of farmers and easy reach to healthy food for consumers. Sustainable Farming is a timely solution and a major contributor to maintain the beautiful chain of Bio-diversity. It is a wonderful way to reduce the usage of water resources in agriculture, to improve the soil nutrition, to create a sustainable livelihood for farmers, healthy nutritive food, a green planet, reduced risk of chronic life-style prone diseases and creating real wealth to future generation. We being “THE CONSUMERS” need to take a stand in the role we play in building our society and not just exist but CO-EXIST.
Some of the initiatives taken by F5 green are as follows:
The Vision of Green café to is to be a part of the Farm to Farm Concept that brings a Healthy Diet to the Humankind & the Planet and to present Healthy Organic Food to the public under hygienic & aesthetic atmosphere that brings peace & happiness both to the body and mind.
The Vision of organic mudra is to serve as an interface to promote organic products.

After the cleanup on Sunday morning don't miss out to collect your terracotta CCC6 cup with your beach zone coordinator. The mug is sponsored by Organic Green Cafe T Nagar.

Thanks,

Chennai Coastal Cleanup - Be the Change you Wish to See!

Sunday was a day to remember in the history of Chennai!

Together We collected and Segregated 29 tonnes of garbage from our beaches out of which 16 tonnes (55%) will beRecycled.

Every single day 6400 tonnes of non-segregated garbage leaves the city (our homes, companies, apartments) to be dumped and burned in our beautiful Pallikarnai marshland, a place which is unique attracting migratory birds from across the world. In one community nearby one of the city's garbage dumps 30% of young women is suffering from breast cancer linked in all probability linked to the contamination of air and groundwater. And we all know that our modern consumption lifestyle started only recently in the last decade. It's gonna take much less time for the situation to get much worse. Statistics show that our city is one of the most polluted in India!

The only way we can change our own fate is by being the change - if we can segregate 29 tonnes of garbage from 20km of our beaches then why can't we find the motivation to segregate our own garbage at home? Once our home waste segregated our job is done - non-profit organizations like Paperman.in and Dailydump.org are ready to collect and recycle dry waste at our doorstep or help us in composting wet waste. Let us start now to work towards a more sustainable green planet for planet, ourselves and our children.

Do share your thoughts with us on the Chennai Coastal Cleanup, our ever growing garbage footprint and possible solutions towards a greener more sustainable planet, etc.

Happy Birthday CTC Ainthinai - Ainthinai turns 3 !!!

What is Ainthinai ?

Per Ancient Tamil Sangam Literature our landscape has been divided into 5 categories which are Kurinji, Mullai, Marutham, Neithal and Paalai. Each of these five geographic thinai's are named for a flower that is characteristic of that landscape.

  • மருதம் / Marutham - வயலும் வயல்சார்ந்த இடமும் / Crop land or Agricultural Region

How is Ainthinai related to CTC ?

Ainthinai is the active Green Wing of The Chennai Trekking Club. It consists of a large group of volunteers, from the 25k member CTC group, who actively engage themselves towards the conservation of Mother Nature. Over the past 3 years our Ainthinai team has been involved in various social and environmental conservation activities including but not limited to Tree Plantations, Sapling maintenance drives, Tree walk programs (to know about our native trees), Organic Farm Visits & Volunteering, Cleanup Programs in beaches, lakes and forests, Organizing Terrace Garden Workshops. In short people who are concerned about Mother Nature are part of Team - Ainthinai.

How it all started?

There is a start to everything. Few years ago, our CTCian Sridhar and his friends(from outside Chennai) were involved in a casual discussion about Chennai. It was during this discussion his friends started complaining about how hot Chennai is. That made him realize the reality that people from other cities/states are facing in Chennai due to hot weather. He joined with other CTCians and started discussing about the reason behind Chennai's hot climate, reducing green cover inside the city, no. of trees that are being cut down for infrastructure improvement, etc. That kickstarted our first Tree Plantation activity on June 16th 2012. After that over the course of time it got support from many CTC volunteers and now we have a dedicated group of volunteers team which is what we proudly call as "Ainthinai".

(img source : http://s3.amazonaws.com)

What is the Objective of CTC Ainthinai Team?

The main objective of CTC Ainthinai Team is to increase the green cover in our city and conserve the above mentioned five types of lands in all possible ways, be it planting as many trees as possible or promoting organic farming, . We are constantly involved in conducting various events to make sure our Planet Earth remains a better place to live in for us and our future generations. We try and spread awareness to as much individuals as possible about the importance of conserving our Mother Earth.

(img source : i1.trekearth.com)

What Ainthinai has done so far?

  • Tree Plantations - As mentioned earlier, Ainthinai Team was formed with the motive of increasing the green cover in our city. But as we progressed we spread outside of our city and presently we have planted over 6100 saplingsaltogether in Chennai, Thiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Thiruvannamalai, Karur, Cuddalore, Pondicherry, Tindivanam and few other locations. We always make sure that we plant indigenous saplings instead of any hybrid or non native trees.

  • Saplings Maintenance Drives - Ainthinai strongly believes that planting a sapling is not just enough, we also need to make sure that they are maintained well and it grows out into a tree. To ensure that we conduct regular maintenance drives at our plantation locations. Typically we carry out tree plantation activities during monsoon season (June-December) and follow it up with maintenance drives at the same locations during January - May months. Our maintenance activities usually involves removing weeds around the saplings, adding mulching to the saplings, watering, adding manure, fixing/removing tree guards and installing water management techniques (drip irrigation).

  • Tree Walk Programs - In our daily life we go in search of a shady tree to rest, stand or park out vehicle safely away from the sunlight. These are the trees that provide us the much needed protection from sunlight, yet standing silently and producing Oxygen for us to breathe in. But have you ever wondered about what is the kind of tree that we are standing under or we have parked our car under ? Tree Walk programs are conducted to address this and promote awareness about the kind of trees that we come across in our daily life, learn about the benefits they provide us, etc. We conduct periodic Tree Walk programs for volunteers with the help of experts. As of now we have conducted multiple Tree Walk programs in MCC (with the help of Prof. Narashimman), Kotturpuram Tree Park (with the help of Nizhal team) and Yerankadu Arboretum.

  • Volunteering Lake Cleanups - Lakes are nature's way of harvesting rain water and the current polluted status of our lakes are something to be really worried of. In collaboration with Environmentalist Foundation of India (EFI)we are involved in clean-up drives across various lakes of Chennai in the hopes of reviving them.

  • Organic Farm Visits - Ainthinai strongly believes that “Agriculture is our Culture”. We conduct volunteering activities in various organic farms in and outside the city. This is done with the motive of educating our current generation about our Roots, hence these events are named as "Back to our Roots". This initiative provides wonderful platform to volunteers to learn more about agriculture, organic way of doing it, etc. Our typical volunteering activities in farms includes Paddy Transplantation, De-weeding, Harvesting, Ploughing, Preparing Organic manures, etc. We take this chance to thank Organic Ville (located near Camp road) and Mr. Kannan for providing a opportunity for our volunteers to learn more about agriculture.

  • Waste Segregation in CCC - Chennai Coastal Cleanup - India's biggest yearly cleanup activity conducted by The Chennai Trekking Club for the past 6 years. More than 5000 volunteers participate in this cleanup and collect garbage spread across from Marina to Uthandi. An approx of 50 tonnes of garbage is being collected as part of CCC every year. In this initial two years of CCC the collected garbage was being sent to our corporation dump yards, until the third edition of CCC which is when our Ainthinai team came up with the idea of segregation of our garbage and recycling as much as possible. Our lead volunteers during the cleanup make sure that the garbage is collected on a segregated basis, so that it can be recycled as much as possible and help reduce the overhead on our recycling partner. Last year more than 80% of the garbage that was collected as part of CCC was recycled with the help of our recycling partner Earth Recycler and only the remaining 20% was sent to dump yards.

  • Terrace Garden Workshops - With the motive of "Lets grow our own food", Ainthinai team conducts regular workshops, events and provides opportunities for volunteers to learn about Terrace/Kitchen Gardening. With the help of these workshops many of our volunteers have started setting up their own terrace gardens and grew their own vegetables thus ensuring a healthier life by consuming vegetables that are grown free of artificial chemicals and other pesticides.

  • Nursery Maintenance Drives - Ainthinai grows its own saplings in its Nursery. Nurseries are the birth place of every sapling, which will eventually grow into a tree one-day. In order to provide our volunteers the knowledge about relationship between a sapling & soil and how a sapling is being grown, we let them work in our nursery, where they get hands on experience on how a sapling is being grown. We conduct such periodic nursery maintenance drives to provide a platform to our volunteers for understanding soil, mother bed, sowing, packing the sapling along with the soil, transplanting them, etc.

  • Volunteering - Being a member of Volunteering Club, Ainthinai believes that volunteering is fun :). So we as a team never hesitate to lend our hands and extend support for those who are working on conserving Mother Nature. During one of our visit last year to Coop Forest (Salem) our volunteers planted around 1000 saplings inside Coop Forest and Puvitham. Similarly we conduct volunteering events to Sadhana Forest (Auroville) to learn techniques which have been successfully implemented there and also lend our volunteering support in their daily community activities and constructing water conservation bunds along the stream, etc.

  • Green Treks - 'Practice what you preach'. We believe in this. Thats why Ainthinai initiated the concept of Green treks in CTC. Apart from the regularly followed principles of CTC, which includes no littering, we also started procuring supplies that are needed for the trek with no plastic wrapping and chose to carry them in paper/cloth bags. To eliminate the ill effects of using PET bottles we introduced Stainless Steel bottles for trek volunteers and participants.

Milestones of Ainthinai
Over the past 3 years, Ainthinai has involved in so many activities. Among those few important and major ones are listed below.
  • Ayyangarkulam, Kanchipuram

Ayyangarkulam is a village in Kanchipuram district. CTC Ainthinai identified a suitable location to conduct tree plantation drive there and executed the plan on March 24, 2013 wherein our team planted 50 saplings around the lake bund. With the continuous support from locals and maintenance drives by our volunteers during that summer, most of the saplings have grown well. Ainthinai conducted another Anniversary Tree Plantation drive on June 29, 2013 at the same village and planted 250+ saplings with the help of around 200 selfless volunteers. An major corporate company have lend their support on planting another 750 saplings at the lake bund. With the continuous effort of CTC Ainthinai, Ayyangarkulam is in the process of becoming a perfect eco spot with lots of green cover.

  • Green Day at Thenneri

This is one of the recently initiated signature event of CTC Ainthinai. We are in the progress of creating a eco-forest in Thenneri. This village is one of the anciently significant and culturally important village. Its believed that the name “Thenneri” drives from one of the early Cholas named “Thirayan” who constructed a huge lake in this village. Ainthinai was so blessed to execute its project of  “Forest in Making” at this same lake. With the help of Forest Department and selfless volunteering effort from 200+ CTC volunteers we planted over 1000+ saplings in the lake bund of Thenneri. We took much care on choosing the saplings that are suitable to the soil and in turn increasing the Bio-Diversity of this place. Till date we have conducted 10+ regular maintenance drives over the summer to ensure maximum survival rate of total saplings planted. Hard work always pays. As a result of these constant maintenance activities, over 80% of the saplings have survived this hot summer and are waiting to witness their first monsoon. A forest is getting created. J

  • Tree Plantation at Gangai Konda Cholapuram
Chola Dynasty is one of the ancient kingdoms which ruled Ancient Tamil Nadu. As a celebration to mark 1000 years of King Rajendra Cholar, CTC Ainthinai got the golden opportunity to conduct a Tree Plantation drive at the ancient Capital of Chola Kingdom, which is Gangai Konda Cholapuram. With the help of Mr.Gomakhan, CTC Ainthinai Team planted 87 saplings in the Memorial Park of King Rajendra Cholar which is being constructed to mark the occasion of King Rajendra Cholar’s 1000 Years Festival.

Hai don’t call me akka akka , Just call me priya OK”ன்னு சொல்ல அதையும் நாங்கள் ஏற்றுக்கொண்டோம்.

India Clean Sweep II - Dharmapuri

Dharmapuri

It all started on a full moon day during the course of a casual conversation when we were on a trek to Velliangiri hills. Siva was talking about CCC with lots of enthusiasm and he was way too excited and committed on making CCC 6 a great success and reaching out to more people. He then asked me why don't i do it in my hometown and mentioned that we can cover it under India Clean Sweep which is an initiative by Team CCC to spread the awareness to more cities. The very idea of doing such an event in my home town excited me and to add with it the fact that am gonna work with like minded people. "Sure machi, Kalakidalam (definitely will do it pal)" said I. Siva then handed me over the SPOC contact which is Aravindh who is taking care of ICS.

Being a strict officer that he is, he regularly followed up with us on the arrangements and other progress, up until i completed this write up and sent it to him :)

Even though we gave the commitment to Siva that we will do the cleanup, we were just 2 people, myself (Vijayakumar) and my buddy Vijay Anand. Then Vijay Anand brought Sharath - an energetic engineering student into this planning activity. Initially we had planned to do a clean up at Ramakkal Lake which is one of the main lakes in Dharmapuri. We started putting up event in facebook and invited our friends and foes to join hands with us. Sharath was the man behind all this which he did with the guidance of Aravindh.

In the meantime, I had the opportunity to discuss about this with one of my facebook friend - Niyas, who is a reporter in Indian Express. I was and am a regular follower of his posts in facebook. Most of his posts really made me think out of box giving varied views. As i went on explaining about this cleanup to him, he appreciated our efforts and gave some suggestions and inputs as well.

"Vijay we already started working in Lakkiyampatti lake. We are doing it on a regular basis there, it would be helpful if you guys join with us and help us in finishing this lake cleanup. It will be a ongoing process instead of one day cleanup, since this lake is getting polluted continuously" said Niyas. It made sense to us and so we started working with him.

On the day of the cleanup we reached Lakkiyampatti lake. Niyas welcomed us and showed us the work they have done till date and explained how we are going to progress on the cleanup. He is doing the cleanup of this lake in association with Thalirgal team. The ideas and plans that he is having for the lake was very inspiring, from building a yoga center, a walking lane, a children library, etc. With his speech he almost visually brought up a cleaned lake in front of my eyes.

We were around 20 people in the lake at 6.30 and we got started with the cleanup. We collected around 50 bags full of plastics and papers around lake. Most of us met each other for the very first time and we never felt like we were strangers. Since it was our very first cleanup in our home town, we were not able to bring in big attention or awareness to the people. But  ...................

It was a gathering for a better, cleaner India. People from all age participated with lots of enthusiasm. Especially kids, who continuously popped out many interesting questions to our volunteers. Questions like "Why are we cleaning?""Whats the use of Cleaning?""What will happen if animals eat the plastics and other garbage that we throw ?". All in all it was a great awareness event among the children who were explained clearly on the ill effects of Plastics that we throw in our daily life. Most of the volunteers were first timers, but despite they all very actively participated in the cleanup. At the end of the day the entire pond area was much cleaner than before and all our volunteers left with a satisfied heart filled with happiness.
