Cause

"Due to recent cyclone Vardah, Chennai has lost significant part of its green cover. Ainthinai, CTC's green wing, is actively working with Forest Department and other NGOs in greening the city through tree plantations and maintenance drives throughout the year. Our volunteers planted 7000+ trees in the last 4 years in and around the city. We need your support to cover related expenses tools for planting, manure for saplings, including tree guards, irrigation, transportation, etc. Your help will go a long way in supporting the ongoing green momentum to make our city a greener and more beautiful place to live in.

CTC Turns 9 - How Fitness test have shaped people's lifestyle

Over the past 6 months, the bi-weekly fitness tests in Chennai trekking Club have played a major role in shaping normal humans into fit individuals, sports enthusiasts into ultra-athletes, budding runners into trail runners. CTC Turns 9 this february, and it is very important to carry on this momentum to continue the fitness revolution that has hit Chennai few years ago. We see triathletes, runners, cyclists, swimmers everyday and everywhere which was not the case few years ago. All this is because of the people's never ending enthusiasm for becoming fit and to be fit and have a healthy lifestyle, regular activity and sport is very important. So do join our CTC's biweekly fitness test to check your level and keep training to improve. There are people who have regularly attended the tests,  trained and became into marathoners, so the result is not important whereas the attitude and consistency is. What are you waiting for?
Over the past 6 months, the fitness test data of number of registrations per week, attendance per week and fit individual count is given below. This is just the beginning.

Fitness
 test records:
Monit(Age 3): Barefoot climber and Divyesh(Age 5): Runner just ruled the 142 m Panchapandava hills today along with their father, climbed in 6 and 7 min respectively. What are you guys waiting for, these kids are just full of energy and proper climbing techniques

Fitness test stories:

Meet Brahadeesh Chandran who just joined the CTC Ultra running gang! He joined the fitness test 3 months ago and was into treks and now have transformed himself into an ultra-runner. He was new to running just 2 months ago but consistently practiced and completed 3 of our 10x10 series in the city. This weekend he successfully completed the Shevaroy 92K ultra trail hill run! Here is an interview about him :

Meet Paandiyank new rising star in the CTC Ultra sky. New to running 2 months ago, he consistently participated in our ongoing 10x10 series and recently completed our Shevaroy 90K Ultra! He also attended the fitness test as a fresher and is now into endurance sports. Here is an interview  :

Nagarajan AS, a newbie few months ago starting from fitness test. He has evovled into a trekker and regular runner. He consistently participated in our ongoing 10x10 series

Timings to reach the peak generally vary between 5 minutes to 15+ minutes depending on the fitness level of participants:
  • 10 min and below - fit to participate in CTC moderate treks
  • 11-15 min - need to become more active to improve fitness (read: health)
  • 16+ min - out of shape! Urgent action required to get out of unhealthy shape
Members taking 11+ minutes to scale the peak should engage in regular physical activity (e.g. trice a week, 30-60min each) - any sport will do:
  • Trekking - join for any of our ongoing easy weekday morning treks
  • Swimming - join our twice a week open water swimming camp
  • Cycling - cycle near your neighborhood or join our frequent cycle rides. Cycles can be rented in many stores in the city
  • Running - go for a solo run near your house or join one of the many running groups across the city
  • Others - any regular sport activity will get you quickly in shape: play badminton, volleyball, soccer, etc.
We have all become stagnant in our modern day lifestyles (sitting at office, commute, home) disconnected from the active lifestyle of our forefathers. Unless you engage in a regular physical activity to offset our stagnant lifestyle your health will quickly dwindle down. A regular sports routine will make you feel more active & alive, sleep better, eat healthier, you ll make better use of early mornings, ... simply said - it ll change your life!
So what are you still waiting for to step out?
So what are you waiting for, December is here and looking forward to see future athletes, runners, swimmers, climbers ....
The fitness test for January is on Tuesday Jan 17. Get ready folks.
Regards

[Post trek write-up on 2-day moderate trek to Nagala on Jan 21-22 by Vinoth - blog link]

If don't lose and gain something, you've not lived the day even of an idle rock sitting at the bottom of a lake quietly gains moss.

Only when you step outside your comfort zone will these changes be noticed.

A trek is where,

  • you lose your fear to step outside your comfort zone
  • you lose the mindset that your body could only take so much of pain
  • you lose faith in the popular propaganda that your bed is only comfy zone
  • you lose your shyness towards new people
  • you lose your timidity towards unknown routes where you can't find 'auto-drivers' to guide you
  • you lose your favourite track-pants and, um! also your dirty socks.

A trek is where,

  • your body surprises you by staying strong even after being torn by the guiltless wild thorns
  • you won't stop even when your knees scream in pain and heels are as squishy as bread
  • you don't know why you chose to wander in the wild while you could have finished another season of 'Sherlock'
  • you're one with your self and nature and roam around without worrying about how soiled your dress has got
  • you don't have to pretend to be happy but really be at ease with your own personality
  • you keep running and climbing for two days with a couple of apples and bits and pieces of burfee that gets passed around (the owner gets the first piece and the empty cover)
  • and as a bonus, you earn your medals of valour marked by your own pure blood (not you, muggle-born!) and ruptured skin.

Attempting to enter the jungle through one route or the other, we've tried about five entrances where we climbed a bit and climbed down to climb a different way only to get down again and Peter pretended to not know the one entrance he'd have already decided. I believe(d) he was only getting the first-timers warmed up.

And then the trek began officially with a slow and steady climb for a pretty view of the lake, dam and fields.

In search of the waterfalls we started walking, well, not walking per se but a good mix of hopping, jumping, sliding, falling and crawling.

This time, we were shown mercy as we were led along the stream where we could stop anywhere any time to fill our biological pot and not carry much water in bottles adding more load to the shoulders.

Searching for the falls we ventured, to find exactly that. A small, steady waterfall that washed away all our sweat and stains.

Emptying a few packets of bread, pickles (bread with pickles, yes, seriously), apples, oranges, dates. We(Sundhar) don't bother washing them even if they fall on the ground but just pick 'em, lick 'em and snuck 'em into our hungry mouth.

Off we went again towards the campsite.

Following a champion(Arun) who was lost twice(and found his way even in the dark) on this very route on our previous treks, we went ahead of the group, a little sure that third time is a charm and so was it. We (16 out of 33) reached the campsite just a little late after the sun went down and darkness started to blanket the path ahead.

Reaching the 'Picnic pool' we settled down along the flat surfaces beside the stream listening quietly to the not-so-complex symphony of nature, the gentle swoooshing and mild lapping of water throughout the night.

With no source of fire, a group set to put to test all that 'Bear Grylls' taught. From using stones, rubbing wooden sticks, igniting the dry leaves with a spark from a torch battery (yes, after sacrificing a torch light) but to no avail.

While others who were not so optimistic chose to have a few fruits and lie down to rest, though secretly wishing somehow the others succeed and we get to have some hot maggi before calling it a day.

Lying down in the dark and witness the magical fireflies blinking a little closer and little farther is one good therapy to make you forget the hardships of the day.

And as it got darker, slowly they gathered overhead, the shiny little stars, going over their daily duty of forming the constellations. One cannot but swoon at the pretty sight.

We woke up to find, at last, the lighter has come and we could get to cook our food before the rest of the team arrive, with whom we were not ready to share our Maggi then, as they'd have had (and only they did have) their portion the previous night.

Finishing off the 'Knor-soupy-top-ramen-Maggi-noodles' and having a few dips in the magic pool to unwind ourselves, we started off again to find our way out.

Failing to realize that Peter is noticing, we went up and down all smiling and still walking briskly because of the energy regained over the night.

Saying, "Everyone is still smiling? Well, CTC's reputation is at stake now!", he decided to show us what a 'MODERATE' trek really could and should be.

Down we started to climb. Only that, there wasn't aan actual trial here and we hear only Peter's voice from below, urging us to proceed down the same route.

More punctures and scratches whenever we fail to duck while crossing thorn climbers.

After an hour of halting and donating a drops after drops of blood to the thirsty thorns we reached the stream when he suggested (luckily, not seriously) if we would like to do one more trip up and down the same route.

Following the dry stream we found the water point where filled our bottles, had lunch and onwards we went.

Reaching the final waterfall we(mostly non-swimmers) formed a human chain to pass our bags to the other end of the hip-level-pool and the swimmers did their last dives before bidding a good bye to the most generous host, the NAGALA.

Grow Your Own Saplings
is a new initiative of Ainthinai. The main objective is to encourage the volunteers to raise the saplings in their home itself by sowing the seeds, transplanting and raise it for next 6 months.

It's not just about Planting and Growing a Trees... It's about Giving Birth!

Goal of the initiative?

CTC Ainthinai has been involved in Tree Plantation activities from 2012 onward with the help of numerous volunteers support. We used to procure the saplings from Forest Department Nurseries, Private Nurseries and other nurseries which are running by NGOs.

We wanna build the relationship with a Saplings and a soil from the saplings birth itself. As the volunteers are involved in this initiative, they could get more insights about the saplings.

1) How to sow a seed?
2) How many days will the seed to germinate?
3) How much amount of water we need to pour?
4) How to transplant a sapling from one cover to other cover?
5) How much manure & soil we need to mix?
6) How many days it take a sapling to raise 5ft?
7) How to save the sapling from the pests?

These above are the basic questions we used to raise. By involving in this initiative, we can get more idea about raising a sapling by ourselves. We will be providing constant support and guidance over the periods.

Wanna get inspired by someone?

Have you ever thought you can raise 100+ saplings from an apartment? We are so happy to introduce Mrs.Mallika who stays in a first floor of an apartment from Thiruvanmiyur. She raised all these 100+ saplings over a year to more than 7-8ft. Isn't inspiring She raised Pungai, Punnai, Naaval, Badam, Poovarasu, Banyan, Athi, Arasu and other varieties. This was so inspiring to see her dedication and care for the saplings.

Plan:

1) We provide 10 seeds of different types (Native & 3 varieties)
2) We provide Saplings Cover
3) We provide Soil mixed with manure for the 10 Covers
4) Detailed demonstration will be given to everyone
5) Grownup saplings can be used to plant them after few months.

What is required?

1) A kind and caring heart
2) Few minutes of our personal time on every week
3) Small place to keep around 10 saplings and raise them to 5-6ft

What do you get?

Great lesson.. Wonderful time.. Peace of mind..
Great pleasure when planting a saplings which is raised by you..

Any doubts/Clarifications/suggestions/feedback, please reach out to team members.

Thanks,
Ainthinai

Interview from Youngest Man of CTC - Ainthinai - Mr. Sreedharan

$

Here comes the Youngest man of Ainthinai, Mr. Sreedharan, sharing his experiences with Ainthinai.

I am 69 and retired from Central Government service. Enjoying my retired life as on date with young and energetic group of AINTHINAI
It was one day when I saw a news item that CTC is organizing coastal cleanup.  I took interest in that, since all my life I lived in Government quarters where the streets will be clean .The moment I started my life in Chennai the scenes i saw was soar to me.

That made me to take part in the coastal clean up and on that occasion I came across lot of youngsters doing social works. That is how I came into CTC and today I have lot of youngsters as my friends.

Though on the first day I have collected lot of plastics and was to extremely happy for the contribution. During next year coastal cleanup
an incident gave me a shock. Early morning when I was picking up rubbish from Fore Shore Estate area I saw two men drinking alcohol and
they just threw the plastic tumbler and the empty water sachet knowing pretty well that we are helping/teaching them the need to clean.
Subsequent events I have avoided but happy to see my friends even after such thing continue to do their best. Hats off to them.

I started joining for tree plantation and maintenance. My first  work was with lot of unknown faces in a lake bund near Kanchipuram.
It was very hot day but every one involved in the maintenance work. Recently I visited the same spot and happy to see the trees grown up
and more when I saw more saplings are planted by villagers themselves after taking clue from AINTHINAI. Since then, may be 4 years, I am associated with CTC/AINTHINAI team in planting and maintenance activities. I also joined the  first two AINTHINAI Green Day events. It was a wonderful experience and very satisfying activity.

There is nothing as biggest achievement but having the company of good and hard working, committed volunteers. The group when
it is out of Chennai plans to stay overnight and that is wonderful experience. Normally I have seen the youngsters with good habits, no politics,
no gossiping but lot of fun by singing, dancing and pilling others but with out entering into personal life. Over all I see these youngsters
a week schedule, mostly handling mouse, comes and enjoys while doing a service to the planet and by that relaxing going back for
next week schedule in the office. This itself  I see as a stress buster for many.

I took part in two Green Day events of CTC/AINTHINAI and happy to receive memento as  “PASUMAI WARRIOR” in 2015 event.

Being a retired person I have ample amount  of time and there is no work pressure which makes me to be  more committed for this satisfying activity. This message of tree planting/maintenance should be carried to the college and school level also. In my opinion AINTHINAI  should not just stop with plantation and maintenance only but go one step ahead, if required another wing of AINTHINAI should be there to broadcast this message to the educational institutions and to larger audience.

I am happy that AINTHINAI has some notable persons in their contacts like Mr. Irulandi, IFS, and Dr. Narasimhan, Professor in MCC.
They can be roped in conducting lectures in colleges and arranging tree walks for youg generations. Hope AINTHINAI core will consider this suggestion.

I am watching the AINTHINAI team for almost four years. Plenty of new volunteers and many of them are today leading  in organizing many
events of CTC / Ainthinai at different places. Ainthinai always  encourages the participation of new volunteers. There is also total gender equality in this team.I see some group from cycling meets the runners, trekkers and bickers and vice versa and share their experiences.

AINTHINAI IS a place for all to mix, mingle and spread your friendship circle and also work together for the betterment of the planet.

To high light for the commitment I will add how the car owners are transporting the tools, saplings and even manure in their cars while few in our society will not remove the plastic cover of the car seat just to keep their cars in Mint condition. Over all I enjoy being with this  group and along i also contribute to the greenery of the plants. Age is not a concern for this group and that is why I am with them even at the age of 69.

The trees which used to be gentle, in the name of “VARDAH” played havoc / Many trees were uprooted and many branches have  broken and fallen. This is a sad time for the AINTHINAI volunteers but they will raise on this tough situation and add many more trees.

Dr. Narasimhan, known to AINTHINAI,stated that most of the trees uprooted are exotic and non native trees. The aim of AINTHINAI is only for planting native trees. When I travel in the National High ways I dream that the median should  be planted and  lined with PALM Trees all along. Palm Tree improve the water charging and these trees will not be a hindrance for the traffic on the contrary may help in stopping uncontrolled vehicle jumping in the opposite lane also. Also for a note Palm tree is the TamilNadu State Tree.

Join Ainthinai have fun and also contribute to the society.

X-Mas Ride To Kalrayan Hills [2016]

24th December 2016,
“It’s not about the destination, it’s about the ride”

Why do some people love riding? Its coz they feel so passionate about it and there were bunch of passionate people for this amazing 2days ride to Kalrayan hills near Kallakurichi. We started our trip around 6am in the morning actually 2teams, one from Bengaluru going to Kerala and the Chennai team to Kalrayan hills.
Around 18 bikes plus 3cars with 28 people kicked off for this trip, Balaji being the lead and Praveen Kumar sweeped all of them.
We stopped at 100km away from Chennai near Mamandur for a short break, where we cuddled around cute white rabbits.

We reached Tindivanam tollgate and stopped near “road-kadai” for breakfast, as usual fights started over dosas, omelette and then Arun Prabhakar joined the fight :P actually the trip.

The drive was smooth and seamless in highway, which lasted some hours and ready to stop for lunch where Viswanathan joined us and had our lunch in a small hotel at kallakurichi. One group went to buy ingredients for dinner.
We reached Komuki dam for a power nap before starting. Dam was almost bone-dry and already few youngster playing there and this dam serves as the prime source for 7 villages under its vicinity. We also refreshed ourselves near a water pumping system for fields(colloquially called “pump-set”).

KOMUKI DAM

After a good rest we headed towards the camp site. Nice, beautiful winding stretches aside splendid section of sceneries alongst periyar falls took us to kalrayan hills, it gloams and breezing off chill air surely unbearable without warm clothes, we also changed clothes in a shelter provided by a local there.
Camping is all set in a nice public space which had an open stage for audience. We collected firewood and started barbecuing veg & non-veg foods separately.

                 25th December 2016

What are you currently doing (job/study)? your interests?

I am currently pursuing Chartered Accountancy course, My interests include reading comics, learning & understanding new things & any outdoor activities.

When & How  did you  get started  CTC?

My journey with CTC started post floods, in 7th Phase of Surya nagar cleanup. I have always wanted to give back something back to Mother Earth, I strongly feel this is one such way to do so. Thanks to my dear friend Vishal who introduced me to such an amazing place & ever since I'm have been doing my bit.

What are the activities of  CTC that  you are involved in?

I have been part of various Cleanups & Plantations, Awareness sessions in Schools & communities & lately in running

What will you say has been your biggest achievement when it comes along with  CTC?

I feel the biggest achievement after joining is I have learnt to push my limits, challenge myself in various situations & mainly I have lost my fear for various things.

Anything else you might want to add?

CTCians are more of family then a team, really happy to be a part of it. Whatever I achieve major credits goes to them because they are the one who taught me never to stop & keep pushing.

Share any one of the CTC Best moments you had !

Every cleanup & every plantation I go are the amazing moments of my life. Meeting selfless souls like Ahamed, Raja , Avinash & many more are the best.
Adding to that, During one of the Theosophical Society cleanup we had an opportunity to rescue a small turlte under loads of garbage. This pushed me not to miss any more cleanups, as I came to know this is also done for our voiceless mates.

How do you manage your work life balance ?

Basically now I have just completed my CA Inter, so I'm studying still. I strongly feel everyone must spend atleast 10 to 15 hours a week towards some social activity. That is what I am trying to do. During my exams, I take a break for a week but I make sure I compensate it in coming weeks. I also strongly believe we can always MAKE time.

Any specific goals/dream that you are working on ?

To create a more self sustainable greener environment, To help lots of people, Spread love, compassion & positivity all over the World

How has your life changed after joining this CTC ?

I have started to love & care more about nature. CTC has helped me to be more active & fit through early morning cleanups/plantations & runs.

We have seen you in leading many of volunteering and how does this helps you outside CTC ?

I have lost my fear of public speaking, I can feel that I have become more independent & Straight forward.

What are you other interest?

I have always loved swimming, which I'm hoping to learn soon & join at Ottiyambakkam quarry

Finally to all my dear mates, Come Explore, Love & Live is something I have learnt as a whole from CTC. Though I haven't been part of treks still, I have heard lots of beautiful stories from my fellow CTCians. We must always remember its NOW or Never. Make sure we give back something to Mother Earth before we leave.

What are you currently doing (job/study)? your interests?

I work with Astrazeneca Pharma as a Software Engineer. I like to work closely with Nature, spend some valuable time with people around us.

When & How  did you  get started  CTC?
I have joined CTC during Dec 2015 Chennai floods, thats the first time when I saw CTC post calling for Volunteers, I had volunteered in delivering food items near Adyar with Ragul Trekker and few other people .
On seeting the team, I got interest in volunteering , started to follow the CTC blog and started working with CTC whenever possible.

The biggest achievement when it comes along with CTC is I have realized my inner capability. And the main thing I learnt  is to achieve the target with Never give up attitude.

Anything else you might want to add?

We meet thousands of people in our lifetime, but there are very few those who pause and leave a mark. The best feeling on earth come only because of the best people in our life, and with their presence, everyday turns lovely. Family isn't always blood. It's the people in your life who want you in theirs; the ones who accept you for who you are. The ones who would do anything to see you smile and who love you no matter what. In this way, you all constitute my blood. Each and every member in CTC is an inspiration to me .  I am proud that I own such nice people in my life and all of you definitely add more meaning to it.
Thanks for always being there, for me.

Share any one of the CTC Best moments you had !

Wherever I go with the people from CTC, the day becomes THE BEST!!!, every minute spent with the CTC team I feel happy that I'm doing good to people or environment .

How do you manage your work life balance ?

Earlier, other than office I felt I never had free time for outdoor activities, but after coming to CTC, I'm spending the same amount of time in office as earlier, but I'm getting lots of time to spend in outdoor activities. I learnt to make time and use it efficiently. Now I agree with the saying, Where there is a will, there is a way!

Any specific goals/dream that you are working on ?

To create awareness with the people on Clean and Green environment , to be happy and make others happy, to help and guide the needy people.

How has your life changed after joining this CTC ?

Earlier I never had an awareness about how we harm the nature by using plastics, now I learnt many things through CTC , the importance of nature. CTC made me physically fit and mentally strong.

Share some of your cycling  that you did in the CTC?

I have done cycling in Jawadhu hills , That was the first time I'm doing cycling in hills,  I had a difference experience in cycling through Trails and villages.

We have seen you in leading many of volunteering and how does this helps you outside CTC ?
Yes, it helps a lot in both Personal and Professional life . It helps me to build  leadership skills, communicate effectively with others ,  I learnt to convey my ideas to people very efficiently.

What are your other interests?
I have been doing only Volunteering in the CTC events , on seeing the participants I got interest to participate in some events.
I have recently started running , I have completed  2 official Half Marathons with No practice, Now I realized I have a capability to run, my interest is to join the runners from CTC and participate in some official events along with the CTC team sometime somewhere !.

We are responsible for our own happiness, but people in our life also play a vital role in it.
We can't chose to travel with anyone, but by destiny, God chooses our friends.
And fortunately, many a times they are so lovely that the journey with them becomes stupendous and amazing.
A simple thank you could not convey all of the gratitude I feel, yet,
I would like to let each one of you know that you made me smile and you were a reason for my happiness.!!

Lets together work towards a cleaner and greener future and bring back the beauty of the Adyar Estuary!!

Join us every Wed and Fri morning 6-7:30am at Foreshore.
