Inline image 2

2 . Zero Waste Management

Inline image 3

Write-up by Anbu

I went to turtle walk yesterday and it was my first walk. I got a call from hema by 9.pm that someone is unable to go today and are u able to go. Then is started from office and went home and had dinner and started from home. I parked by vehicle in best nagar near thalapakkati and from there i went with my friend to  neelangarai and had buttermilk on thiruvanmiyur on the way. I reached the venue by 11.30 . Then raghu who is leading the walk explained about the walk and why we are doing. Then by 12 .pm we started from neelangarai and walk towards bessi.

Raghu started sharing his experience in walk and about the various day walks. Then we reached thirumpiyathum around 1 and took rest for half an hour. After a short break we started moving towards bessi and some of the dogs join with us to the destination . We almost reach the hatchery near theosophical society and thought we had a bad luck. And we continued to the walk towards the broken bridge . In-between hatchery  and broken bridge we found the trace of turtle walk and searched around . The trace was very clear and we followed the trace from shore to the land and then to the shore. Then raghu explained where will be the nest on the  trace.

Most of the nest will be located on the meeting point of ascent and descent  path.. After 5 minutes of search we found the neat started taking the eggs . We counted the eggs and placed in the bag. After collecting 117 eggs we found 6 were damaged. Then we measured the size of the nest(length, breadth and width).nest was pot shaped with small opening and big end at the bottom. Then we move towards the broken bridge and completed the walk in another 10 minutes. Then we went to the hatchery and dig the hole of same size as nest. Then we placed the eggs in the nest and closed it with sand in the same depth as found. Then we marked the place for tracking and entered the details In the document . We all were happy on saving 111 eggs successfully and slept inside the hatchery up to 4.45 and then started to home. While walking towards bessi from hatching point we also watched the shore and reached the bike parking.

Sea swimming J When I was invited by Peter, I presumed that a boat will take us to a certain distance and from thereon we could swim. However reaching the shore, we were asked to jump in which indeed came as a shock. However with Peter’s tips on how to face the waves for first 20 meters, I was able to make the swim.

How has your life changed after joining this CTC ?

The first thing anyone would notice after joining in CTC, is the increase in the number of friends in FB., however what makes them special is the like-mindedness and  the amount of exposure you get through them. Fitness is a definite mention. The pleasure of seeing you expand both physically and mentally cannot be expressed in words. Few other important qualities such as time management, prioritizing tasks, helping tendency, empathy and focus

Share some of your cycling that you did in the CTC?

2 days Nageri hill cycling and cycling during triathlon are my most memorable cycling in CTC. Recently I did a 167 Km heritage cycling, with cycling yogis. My mornings are mostly set for cycling and volunteering

What are you currently doing (job/study)? your interests?

I'm a CAE Engineer (B.E Mechanical) in Ford Motor Company.
My interests are listening, being with Nature and contemplating and trying to feel how people behave and the world works.

When & How  did you  get started  CTC?

Growing up as everyone else, I always felt that I was growing more unconnected and I always wanted to find out that unquenchable thirst of my existence. And on one fine day, on a magical google search I found The Chennai Trekking club. Finally my CTC life started in 2013 with a trek to Nagala which rekindled the fire in me.

What are the activities of  CTC that  you are involved in?

Though I started out with a trek, I branched out into diverse areas ranging from MTB rides, Biking, a bit of tree planting , learning about species, volunteering when ever needed by the team and recently into Ultra running , Triathlon training and Cleanups.

What will you say has been your biggest achievement when it comes along with  CTC?

CTC life has taught me to look at the most simplest of things in awe ans excitement (thought I don't show much in facial expressions).
As I'm concerned, achievements doesn't matter in CTC whereas the only goal is to take a small step forward and keep moving which in turn changes everything including one's self.

Share any one of the CTC Best moments you had !

Each and every moment with CTC is awesome as we do something wonderful to others and the world around us.
Above all, I identify myself with CTC.

How do you manage your work life balance ?

I strongly believe that you can't do a good job if your job is all you do.
A sense of social responsibility and thought should be the perfect way of life. In my case, CTC and family is my balance, everything else is work.

Any specific goals/dream that you are working on ?

My goals for 2017 are 1. To be part of more social activities done by CTC. 2. To convert my home into a zero waste living model. After all change begins from home, isn't it?

How has your life changed after joining this CTC ?

More Freedom, More learning, More initiatives, More courage, More Persistence, More discipline and More happiness.

Share some of your cycling  that you did in the CTC?

I was a guy who was not able cycle more that 30kms. After some events(100 + kms) like South Chennai cycling, Shevaroys with Peteru, Cholavaram / Tiruporur with Raajasekaran & Nambi - I got the confidence to ride solo from Chennai to Coimbatore (500kms) covering small villages along the way (avoiding highways) followed by climbing Vellaingiri hills (1760mts). CTC made it possible.

We have seen you in leading many of volunteering and how does this helps you outside CTC ?

Increase in confidence which lead to better decisions both personal and professional.

What are you other interest?

My latest interest is Running and Improving my swimming skills. Also in process of learning a new language and experimenting with a zero waste lifestyle.

And to my fellow humans, Always remember, All you have is this life. Don't waste it. Create something beautiful before you leave and have fun along the way.

What are you currently doing (job/study)? your interests?

I am currently teaching in School of Architecture and Planning, Anna University.
My interests are varied- I like music, art, nature and travelling.

When & How did you  get started  CTC?

In my school days I used to skip physical training hours and go for music practice and painting. Sports and I were poles apart. It was only after grad school that I slowly started some outdoor adventure, yoga and ran my first half marathon which I got inspired to participate to raise funds for  a grassroots project. I realized the importance of fitness and health and thought yoga would be a good way to start some disciplined practice in my routine.

After relocating back to Chennai I signed up on CTC mailing list, but it was hard getting shortlisted for treks, and I was also very hesitant to go with a group of strangers. Then, Peter introduced the first weekday morning trek to Pallavaram in August 2015 .... it seemed to be my easiest way to start with the group, and I enjoyed it a lot. After that, CTC is part of every weekly or atleast monthly plan.

What are the activities of CTC that you are involved in?

Though when I joined CTC I was mainly interested in trekking only, I discovered other CTC activities which gave me satisfaction of doing something useful and still was fun like  clean ups, waste segregation, saplings plantation and maintenance. Volunteering in sports events like Jawadhu ultra and seeing the participants gave me a lot of inspiration. In July 2016 I did my first triathlon sprint here at CTC for which I had to learn swimming and practice in Ottiyambakkam open waters. Friends here at CTC gave great support during training and the event. 2 months later I ran 21km at CTM 2016. I don’t enjoy much running in city roads and prefer running in greener trails. So I started to go for CTC's hill runs.

What will you say has been your biggest achievement when it comes along with  CTC?

Getting over the thought that I am too old for sports and adventure :P. It is never too late to start. In CTC you get to meet the most inspiring people who make you believe that nothing is impossible.

Anything else you might want to add?

Like many conservative Indian parents, my family does not like my extracurricular, fitness and outdoor activities. It is very hard to convince them.

Share any one of the CTC Best moments you had !

Completing my first ultra hill run 50x2 at Kalrayan hills!! I had just restarted running 3 months earlier and completed 21K at CTM 2016 when I saw the hill run post and I was very eager to see remote tribal villages and experience real trail running. It was an amazing experience and helped me boost my confidence in running (you can read more about it here: http://www.chennaitrekkers.org/2016/10/kalrayan-hill-running-2x50-24th-25th.html ). Kolli hill run (50x2) and Meghamalai 3 day hill run were also very unique experiences and helped me understand the potential of mind and body.

How do you manage your work life balance ?

There is never enough time for all that I want to do. I feel sane because I am able to spend time outside of office following my passions. I learn carnatic music and kalaripayattu (traditional martial art) which keep me busy most mornings and evenings. Whenever possible, I try to go for running or open water swimming at Ottiyambakkam .  In weekends if I am not at some CTC event, I like to work in our village farm and have some family time back home. I try to go for atleast one volunteering event and one trek or adventure every month.

Any specific goals/dream that you are working on ?

I plan to do CTM full marathon and Olympic/ Half iron triathlon in 2017.
I love to travel and go on backpacking adventures to new places.

How has your life changed after joining this CTC ?

I feel more confident about taking challenges and think I am more fit and active.  I am glad to know and work with so many like minded friends here. And there is always some exciting event to look forward every week!!

Share some of your cycling that you did in the CTC?

Honestly, I am not good at cycling or swimming and looking to buy a cycle very soon and practice :P

We have seen you in leading many of volunteering and how does this help you outside CTC

Actually I am not so regular, but whatever volunteering I do, I give my best to it.
In our own campus, we started doing waste segregation and recycling in a small scale with student volunteers and we try to spread awareness amongst students about zero waste.

I always believed in simple and sustainable lifestyle since my childhood (thanks to my upbringing) ... CTC has helped me find like minded people to strengthen these ideas and actually practice it.

Wonder in sandstone

This article is to people who sacrifice Sunday morning slumber for photography, to 3am calmness, to foggy morning drives, to interesting conversations and of course wonderful photographs and locations.

It's 3 AM in the morning and my alarm started ringing. I can't afford to snooze it today, as this alarm is to wake me up for the photowalk at Kanchipuram. I woke up, got ready without making the morning rattling as it would disturb the slumber of others.

I got ready and my scheduled Uber picked me up on time and dropped me at my pick-up point. Allwyn picked me up and we drove our way towards Koyambedu and picked up Karthik Vimaliah (popularly known to us as Karthick 360) and his wife and we were on our way to Guindy which is the common point for most of us on the trip. We met other Karthick Ulaganathan, Mahesh Selvam, Kishore, and Katta Lavanya at Guindy. After a very brief meeting, we started our trip to the city of thousand temples - Kanchipuram.

One thing I adore about these outside city photo walks, is to watch the city vanish in our rear-view mirrors as we drive on empty roads leaving behind the traffic, watching sun rising from its slumber painting the sky with lilac tints and the freedom that I feel as I move away from the rattling of the city. It was all surreal and real at the same time.

When I gaze at this view, I feel the magnanimity of this life and slowly all those demons in my head doesn’t feel as fierce as they seem.

Near Sriperumdur, Siva (popular known as Singam), Johny along with Sathish Kumar and his wife Kiruthika joined us. We decided to make a pit stop at Saravana Bhavan at the outskirts of Kanchipuram to ensure we fully wake up from our siesta.

After our pit stop, we drove towards Kailasanatha temple in Kanchipuram. I love how Kanchipuram town welcomes you, silently in smiles and lets you relax before it offers new stories.

We reached the temple and it was almost empty except for couple of people who were also there for photography. After reaching there we met Prashant and Gnanasekar who directly came to the site for the photowalk.
King Rajasimha, of the Pallava dynasty, built this Kailasanatha (Shiva) temple in the early 8th century. It’s interesting to note the structures at Mahabalipuram was built by the same king.

It is an early structural temple maintained by ASI (Archaeological Survey of India), built of sandstone, and partly renovated in recent times. The modest scale of the temple, and the closeness of its enclosing wall, lend a feeling of intimacy to the surroundings. This place contains in embryo many of the features of the rapidly emerging South Indian style: gopuras, pilastered walls, a pyramidal shikhara, and a perimeter wall enclosing the complex. To put it shortly, it’s a wonder in sandstone.

Apart from the art and architecture, one more thing I loved about the place is the grass lawn. Since its still winter, the grass was covered with dew drops of the morning. It was extravagantly peaceful like a melody as the wind had some magic of its own. It nuzzled softly on our faces as the chirpings of parakeets whispered the sound of love and joy.

I wish I could to lie down on the grass until my hair becomes so wet, that somebody looking at me, might think I just came out from a shower. Since the site was maintained by ASI, it's still a wish.

As you enter the temple, the first thing you will notice are the cell like structures (58 in total) forming the outer wall with perfect symmetry and spacing providing a mesmerizing viewing.

These cells substitute the straight lines on a drawing board and provides space to work on the sculptors inside.

Another aspect which is quite prevalent is the numerous Bulbous pillars with Lions in an alert position at the base and Nandi the Bull being placed at various locations, this shows Pallava's great interest with the Lion figures and Nandi the Bull as it was their Royal Emblem.

After relishing the virtuosity of the sculptures, we were planning to depart and there was a whole set of school students who were coming in and we decided to conclude our walk. During the walk, we had some thought-provoking colloquies which vindicates another exclusive blog article. For now, I am sharing some of the portrayals of those curious colloquies.

Sometimes it’s important to work for that pot of gold but other times its essential to take time off and to make sure your important decision of the day consists of which side of the grass lawn to walk on. Today was one such day. A Sunday well spent.

I am indebted for all the populace who made this photo walk stamped on our memories and special credits to organisers and of course to the almighty who kept us safe throughout the whole trip.

Event Write Up - Cuckoo Forest School Weekend Volunteering

Cuckoo forest school and the movement aims to recreate a society intertwined with nature through traditional sustainable methods as much as possible. This provided me a great opportunity to experience something different from the regular volunteering events like planting trees and clean-ups and was apt to resume my volunteering activities after a brief hiatus. In case you want a tl;dr version, It was an amazing experience to spend an entire weekend volunteering away from the city while pondering about the unnecessary fears we associate with our materialistic living and truly realise what we require to live and that true happiness is in exploring new experiences.

After a lazy Friday afternoon, I quickly packed my bag with basic necessities (which I found to be actually excessive on reaching there) and headed out to our carpooling spot at Guindy. It always amuses me how easy it is to identify unknown CTC/ Ainthinai members among throngs of people going by unabated. Wearing shorts/ jeans and a cap with a small backpack even if it is a long event while waiting nonchalantly are typical traits to look out for. As soon as I found my co-travellers matching such traits, we started our journey. We began to bond over the journey with talks ranging right from organic farming, sustenance living to economic and foreign diplomatic policies. It always amuses me that every CTC member has a unique story to narrate, be it one of my co-traveller who practices organic farming himself while managing his company's operations and another who has quit his cushy corporate job and is pursuing long-term volunteering at reforestation programs while living a vegan lifestyle with resources even lesser than those utilised at Cuckoo school!

We reached the school after some ample help from our master, Googleji and found ourselves to be first among the volunteers to reach there! Slowly the rest started to trickle in over the night while we were getting accustomed to the beautiful place nestled between majestic hills and enjoying the 'thousand star' hotel accommodation after a very long time!

Early next morning, we woke up to the sounds of nature and the beautiful sight of the green hill range towering over our place. Once all volunteers had woken up, we split ourselves into few groups to take care of various tasks needed to be completed which ranged from mulching for a herbal garden, creating banks for a Zen garden pond to cooking, forest walk for collecting dead leaves etc. I accompanied the team which was to move rocks for the pond. Though I thought it was going to be hard, the group-work exhibited and the constant barrage of jokes made light work of the situation that we actually began to enjoy the task with many of us also doing ‘catch practice’ with the stones. Awaiting us after work, was an amazing breakfast of Ragi porridge with fresh cut mango pickle which tasted even better after our pre-breakfast workout! Then we proceeded to resume our work where the difficulty level was raised with much larger rocks to be moved and occasionally one could even hear chants of ‘Bahubali’ in the air, making the entire group break into laughter. As tiredness crept in from the unusual amount of manual work, it became an even more hilarious sight, with each person egging the other with jibes especially using the reward of a sumptuous meal awaiting us on completion and true to the word, as soon as the call for lunch was sounded, all raced ahead towards food immediately!

After the filling lunch, most of us took a power nap and continued on with the rest of the work, alternating between each other with different tasks, before calling it a day. As all retreated back to the huts, among small groups, each engaged in different games with the kids, various 'get to know' sessions and random talks while waiting for the dinner. Meanwhile, we also drank some delicious tea made with ginger, lemon grass, and other herbs to rejuvenate ourselves. After dinner, few went on to sit by the bonfire and later on to a night trek to the nearby river bed to explore the night's mystic beauty. Soon with the tiring yet awesome day of volunteering behind us, all fell asleep to a blissful slumber.

Next morning, after 'treating' myself to an extra hour of sleep in the chill morning, we resumed our remaining work for the pond. After the breakfast, we went to a nearby mango farm to bring back some big rocks on a tractor and that crossed off one item of riding on a full tractor off my list as well! After lifting some humongous rocks, some so huge I needed three others to lift it, we returned back on top of the tractor to meet a local icecream 'tata' who came to serve us some delectable 'Kutchi Ice'! Ensuing that, more work for the pond and the garden was completed before we called it a day and headed for our final meal at Cuckoo.

After the heartening meal, we all sat under a huge tamarind tree to hear from the long-term volunteers at Cuckoo about the conceptualisation of the entire place and the passion and the hardships which goes behind building such a beautiful enclave. Their resolve and dedication towards Cuckoo was inspirational and motivated all of us to work and live more closely to nature. After the talk, we bid adieu to Cuckoo, motivated to work even more for the cause of saving our natural environment and come back to Cuckoo Forest School more often.

SCOOT to PONDY!! - Feb 11 & 12

Abitha Balakrishnan

The title which captured our mind, made us to register for the event. A trip to get us away from usual work. Gel up with different people. Get to know each other. To fulfill a drop of desire of doing something different. Eventually we started on Saturday early morning and returned on Sunday evening. Two days flew away and now with all memories lingering in everyone’s heart.

Distance doesn’t matter when we travel with like-minded souls

We were asked to bring minimal luggage to kick start our Scooty ride to Pondy. As the event focuses Women in majority and everyone will be pretty sure how our minimal luggage will be!! Amazing organizers didn’t inform priorly that our bags will be carried in support vehicle. If they had informed then imagine our luggage J

We all gathered around 5:30am at Tidel signal and after all formalities we started our ride at 6:30am. Nisha leaded the troop, whereas Naan Sundar and Swati sweeped all of us.

We started our journey with a support vehicle and nearly 17 bikes. We stopped at a place for tea and snack and then next halt is for breakfast at Arusuvai virundhu, Kalpakkam.

BOAT RIDE

After breakfast, we went for boating at Muthaliyarkuppam. We took motor boats and after traveling 4 kms in backwater we reached an island. A beautiful place which was overwhelmed by peace. Only sound of the waves was heard. Somewhere at the distance there were fishermen ready to spread their nets and hunt for fishes.

People replenished their energies in the island.

Kabaddi was played in which people pulled each other’s leg. Rolled over the sand, without minding it. No strict rules was followed. Game was absolute fun!! Referee’s decision was never accepted by the losing team and finally somehow one team was declared as Winner.

Until we got next note from organizers we were fondling with puppy which apparently enjoyed our warmth.

Then with our headlights on, we started our bikes again and moved on where next pause is for lunch at Marakkanam. We were going one beyond other enjoying the ride. I hope it was an awestruck view for passerby who viewed our bike rides and waved us.

After reaching Pondichery, we were given a guest house for refreshing. We had a fight for dividing the rooms amongst men and women then we all relaxed for some-time. People went to market for buying Veggies and Fishes. Food preparation happened in full on mode. Meanwhile others were kept busy by playing Antakshari and dumb charades (where mostly arguments and laugh was heard!!)

Image may contain: 4 people, fire, night and food

Veg was prepared inside the kitchen whereas non – veg preparation happened at open space. We collected bricks and wood and Tharani being the chef instructed others to follow the protocol. Fish fry, fish curry along with rice for non – veggies and cauliflower curry with potato chips for veggies were served hot.

Stay At Shore
After dinner, everyone was eager for the night camp at sea shore. Organizers ensured that camp is safe and drove us to the destination. By night, moon had spread its luminescence in the dark along with cool breeze soothes the soul. Some enjoyed the waves silently. Few danced and had long time discussion. At last, everyone was ready with their sleeping bags to withstand the cold and had sound sleep in sand bed with beautiful view of the sky above.

Image may contain: 5 people, sky, night, ocean, outdoor and water

Slowly everyone woke up from their tent and sleeping bags to welcome the Sun.

Image may contain: sky, cloud, ocean, twilight, outdoor, nature and water

As the day was cloudy we weren’t able to see the Sun rise completely. Since we had to return, we started at 7am from shore and got ready at the guest house.

On our return to Chennai, we went to Polaris at ECR. We were all set to go ahead for the paint ball game. Everyone was segregated into different teams by Vishwa. Face mask and safety jacket along with a gun filled with paint bullets was given to each one of us. Safety instructions and rule of the game was demonstrated by the guide.
Fresher for the game went for friendly match and others decided to go for actual game to fulfill their adventurous fun. Everyone enjoyed watching the game encouraging players to proceed further.

Image may contain: 4 people, people standing, child and outdoor

Few of us got injured with the bullet. They stayed with all contentment that they got something to pose J (actually they played bravely!!)
Image may contain: 3 people, people smiling, sunglasses, outdoor, closeup and nature

Thus, our trip came to an end with all good memories. None were tired as we paused at many places for relaxing and fueling our stomach as well as bikes. We are all ready to start our weekday fresh with contended mind.

Thank you organizers for a wonderful trip and eager to meet you all soon :)

   Kick start !!

   Aishwarya Bala
Image may contain: one or more people, dog and outdoor

Pondy, the fancy name for Pondicherry, was the destined destination of my first bike ride on my first ever scooter. Last month I bought my scooter, feeling bad that I couldn't get a bullet that could take me places, beyond immediate reach. Suddenly a post by Chennai Trekking Club popped up on my Facebook feed saying ''Scooty to Pondy”. I immediately registered without second thoughts.

As the travel date approached, the excitement level decreased and nervousness started increasing. This was my first journey with CTC. The nervousness prevailed till we started our journey from Tidal Park, as many members knew each other from their previous interactions at CTC.  What was interesting is that it didn't take very long for all of us to bond. It all kick started when we stopped at the Boat house where few had a beach bath, went for long walks and others played kabadi. By this time, my feelings were reversed. Excitement began rising with all the energy that comes with supporting and playing kabadi. Finally, Biriyani came to the rescue when our stomachs started grumbling.

The feel of riding (western style one behind the other) was amazing. Most of all because it gives me freedom. It's about being outside, the wind on your face, my hair dancing with the gushing wind and the visuals and sounds of life in the city or countryside. What more can one ask for?

Dumb Charades and antakshari was energy packed, with lots of laughter and fun. While few of us played games, some others cooked delicious dinner! On the East Coast, what can one have? Fish, Of course! For dinner we had fresh and yummy fish curry served with steaming rice. And yes, there was food for vegetarians as well. The energy level and the noise came down the minute we could smell our dinner.

Post dinner we headed to the shore to set up our tents and beds for the night.

Lying on a lonely beach with the entire group and doing nothing is what I have always dreamt of. Hell yeah! The freedom to do what you love to do made me enjoy the beach to the fullest. The whole night was spent staring at the sky and identifying stars and planets with an android app.The spray of water droplets from the waves hitting your face is the best feeling. The view and sound of the waves hitting the shore is something I could stare at and listen to for hours. As the sun started to rise, slowly more people started pouring in. Early morning fishing began side by side.

After a good meal, the journey began again! Day 2

The highlight of the day was the Paintball game. All of us were really excited which kept us on our toes! We were in teams cheering and supporting one another. Having the paintball marks on us was one thing to take back for sure..Oh...And a whole lot of friends.

SCOOT 2 PONDY !!!!

By Swati Kannan

Was very much excited to see the mail Stating Women’s ride to Pondy In Scooty. Related to my Bucket list 2017 for a long ride with my Vespa.. This is the best opportunity. And I registered myself immediately. Every day I would open the mails to check for the Selection. And there it was.. “Congrats you are selected..”  And the background music started …

Broken heart – responsible mind set :

Just the day before leaving I rushed to buy the Riding gears as the organizers were strictu. The night before was sleepless cos of my excitement. Picking up my pillion- Mr. Naan sunder and  all excited about the ride ,I  rushed to the tidel signal around 5.45 A.M or so. New faces and all unknown People. Everyone started gathering and we started knowing about each other. And we left at around 6.30 or So. I was with full excitement to drive but  my Pillion – Mr. Naan Sunder was responsible as  Sweep vehicle. Unaware of the responsibility when I raised my gear, he shunned me saying that we are supposed to travel slowly to ensure no one is left behind… so I was driving at the speed of 40 – 45 Km with a broken heart…  Then a little later I felt responsible that we are team and no one is left behind. Enjoying the early sunrise touching the fields , shady roads the ride started to refresh me.
Tea Break – Mudaliyar Kuppam – Pondy.

While making a stopover at the tea shop, we get to know and smile about the new faces. Then we started to set our ride. All our fellow riders were nowhere to been seen except few team members riding before us. Not supposed to honk.. Not supposed to overtake.. Not supposed to drive on their right side … Not supposed to leave them I was keep on instructed by sundar to drive slowly.  Finally we took a break at Kalpakkam at 8.30 for our breakfast. A really good yummy breakfast and left the place. Then onto our next stop at Mudaliyarkuppam. Speed same as 45kmph.

Around 11.30 Reached Mudaliyarkuppam boat house.  Took a break and planned for the boatride to the island. A  new experience in the boat.. Watching birds and Fishes flying… calm and serene environment to enjoy the ride. Sudden boat shakes to fill the ride with laughter.. on reaching the island.. few slept at the shades… some went for bath in the beach , some stayed to enjoy the view and some went for a walk at the beach. Then the kabaddi ground was set and the fun began.. All got set into a team and the match was well played.. Quenching our thirst from the Tender water served we then left from the island.   Once again the drive started and the ride slowly became an enjoyable one.. Had a stop over for the lunch in an unknown shady places. By the time we went all the biriyani was already over but still tasted some fish fry..

After a heavy lunch we started to Pondicherry…   After reaching pondicherry our first stop was near a “ sarayakadai” . ha ha but it was the places we were waiting for our local organizers . With some Hiccups and Mild scratches (our organizers knows it  best :P )   we managed to  reach the home. But it was more than home – A little paradise. After refreshing, tea breaks and fights for the rooms , preparation for cooking has begun. Fish curry, Fish fry for Non veg  people and veg kurma with chips for the veggies. Meanwhile the place was torn into pieces by playing anthakshari and Dumb charades. After the filling Dinner, left to the Beach around 11.00 P.M. (here I should mention the safety measures taken by our organizers were remarkable. ) Early visit to the beach to ensure safety and girls were taken in 4 wheelers . The moment we reached near the beach I fell in love with the moon, waves, wave sound, stars and so on..  The beach was filled with dance, music, fun, romance and Friendship. By the time we all were already close enough to be besties.

Beach night and Paintball game:

One memorable lifetime experience.  “Five star hotels is nothing compared to sleeping under the Five billion stars “. A whole nights listening to the waves and sea breeze.. Life is right there…   sudden birthday celebration of Arun in midnight , and a morning wake at 4.30 to watch the sunrise, fishermen’s fishing and live fishes in the bags were my 01st time experience. But the clouds disappointed me by hiding the sun behind them. Nevertheless the art made by the sun was a visual treat.

Leaving the beach around 6.30 in the morning, took some time for refreshing and Breakfast. We bid farewell to Pondy   around 11.45 A.m. And the fun began again I mean driving at 45KMPH. For a while I enjoyed being the pillion , sun in my face, music and a small sleep.  On the way we had a stop over at Mahabalipuram , where some team members left and then we continued to GO KART- Paint ball. Filled in with fear we all enjoyed the game. I guess I was the only person to leave with 02 Glowing marks :D. Had one crazy Game..  A master game played by the Pro gamers.  ( Arun, Vishwa, Lokesh, Sunder, Mina and Aishwarya ). Leaving from there we went to snacks bar giving hell off a ride to senthil for hitting me .. HA HA HA ( Background devil laughs )  . The shop owner went crazy when we all ordered so much stuffs. That was our last stop and we all dispersed to Chennai.

When i started the trip, i hardly know anyone, but when i left I can remember all the faces with their special characters.  And that’s the speciality of CTC. Kudos to the organizers for making this weekend a memorable one.

Thank you all for the special memories.

I am working for Tata Consultancy Services. Photography is my passion and I love travelling, trekking and exploring new places...

When & How  did you  get started  CTC?

My journey started with CTC during 2012 as a photography volunteer. CTC events served as an excellent platform for me to learn and explore more about photography and travelling.. I owe my gratitude and thanks to Navanee for mentoring me.

What are the activities of  CTC that  you are involved in?

I am part of CTC's Triathlon, CCC, Cleanups and  few Ainthinai events as photography volunteer and also coordinate with team of photography volunteers for CTC event coverage.
I also organise photo- walks/  photography trek and trips.

What will you say has been your biggest achievement when it comes along with  CTC

Volunteering and Organising events at CTC has mounded me as a better person. It has helped me to  speak well with people from different walks of life more confidently, it has helped me to handle crisis situations patiently. Apart from exploring my passion I consider " being a people's person" is one of best thing to happen to me, as this helps in my professional life as well.

Anything else you might want to add?

CTC is kind of an extended family to me...for the last 3+years I have spent most of the weekends for photography volunteering, organising photo-walks trek/trips etc. These events helped me to connect with people, get good friends and learn. I am a proud CTCian :)

Share some of your cycling that you did in the CTC?

There was a scheduled CTCs cycling event during Nov 2015, when heavy rain lashed Chennai. Me along with a group of cycling enthusiasts started cycling towards South Chennai early morning from Madhya Kailash, we seldom realised that city is going to be flooded! We cycled nearly 70+kms in the rain without any doubt or hesitation. In the afternoon while returning to city, we came via Kelambakkam where the OMR main road had knee level water. Cars and bikes were off the road, but we cyclist somehow managed to get back. That was one memorable event with lot of lovely memories, halting at small villages for a cup of tea, cycling in the rain enjoying the picture perfect scenery at city outskirts. That was awesome cycling trip ....

We have seen you in leading many of volunteering and how does this helps you outside CTC ?

Yes my association with CTC is definitely helping me to connect with people at ease. Leading such events make people recognise me. Many at times people identify me being part of CTC and enquiry about how to participate in such events. Such occasions are great privilege and a nice feel.

What are you other interest?

Nothing other than Photography as of now. It's my passion and life.

I take this opportunity to thank all the photography volunteers for extending their support every time. Also the participants of my photo-walk and Trips for their cooperation and support.

CTC-Ainthinai Home Composting Success Story Series - Bharathi Priya - Keep Calm & Compost On :)

The feeling of pride and content never fades when even the smallest effort that you put results in something to be proud and satisfied of.

Its that feeling, only multiplied a gazillion times is what you get when u smell the earthy compost every time you harvest a new batch  :)

It has been close to a year now since me and my hubby started Segregation and Home Composting at our home.

The mission was simple. “No recyclable waste from our home should be sent to the dumpyard”. Thanks to CTC- Ainthinai, we came to know about home composting option at home using Khambha pots and we immediately jumped into the bandwagon.

We started off by segregating the waste in our home into recyclable (wet/dry) and non-recyclable waste (majorly house dust, thin plastics and e-waste like batteries).

The dry waste including thick milk covers, plastic bottles/containers are separated accordingly while we started composting the wet waste using 3T khambha.

The first time when we harvested a "little mountain of black gold", we were overjoyed to see the resulting compost. Ofcourse we boasted and posted about it onFB :p, which resulted in pulling few of my colleagues into the home composting clan ;)

Over the past 4-5 months we were able to harvest almost a full sack of nutrient rich compost. We used all that as manure to nurture the saplings that were planted in CTC- Ainthinai plantation event @ Poonamallee on 5 Feb 2017.

Apart from that, we have been carrying bags for buying daily veggies and monthly groceries, now we even started taking vessels/containers for getting frequently bought things like dosa batter, coffee powder and some groceries as well (the weird look from the vendors on the initial days turned into a lovely smile in later days). This almost eliminated thin and most thick covers usage in our home.

The only unavoidable thing was aavin milk covers. We were able to find a reasonable way to make use of it too :) We washed the milk covers on a daily basis, dried it up and kept it accumulated separately. Over the past year we were able to collect about 500+ milk covers. Thanks again to CTC-Ainthinai team ;), all of this was given to support the new initiative of Team Ainthinai ‘Grow Your Own Saplings’, where in volunteers are engaged to grow tree saplings at their own home.

CTC Ainthinai

Tula

A not-for-profit initiative that brings together Rain-fed Desi Cotton Farmers, Skilled Khadi Spinners, Master Weavers, Dyers who specialise in Natural Colors along with other Skilled Artisans such as Embroiders, Hand Block Printers, etc in creating some of the most beautiful and eco-friendly garments that our country has ever known in this day and age.

All our skilled artisans were in dire need of support despite possessing skills that not many nowadays have and also for the fact that these are the very skills that are dying to the sudden outburst of technology especially after independence and more so in the last couple of decades.
Right at the nick of time a bunch of likeminded friends had decided to step in and make a difference by bringing a niche clothing line purely to empower our artisans by making sure they are all paid well enough for rendering their skills.

While the production was in progress, TÜLA had identified a self-help group who we trained to be tailors and had decided to put to use their skills and get the uncut fabric tailored into contemporary styles and standard sizes for men, women and children. And as a result of this, we now have one of the most eco-friendly garments and perhaps the lightest too.

**What are you currently doing (job/study)? your interests?

I am Dr. Roopa Chozhan, doing my PG in EM(Emergency Medicine), working for Apollo hospitals & free-lance @ medical camps

**When & How did you get started  CTC?

I participated only in Chennai coastal cleanups during college days without knowing its a CTC event..LOL !! The 2015-December flood is when I closely observed CTC activities and their wonderful efforts beyond its self-explanatory name "The Chennai Trekking Club". I always wanted to involve myself in different activities and I remember a random post in FB "call for volunteers-Kotturpuram cleanup" to which I decided to go. I was astonished seeing the pent up garbage @Adyar river, Kottur and even more to see how people volunteered without hesitation kicking up their heels in a trench to clean. I put my gloves on to extend my support that day and will always continue the happy volunteering ever !!

**What are the activities of  CTC that you are involved in?

Since 2015 December, I have participated in most of the CTC activities cleanups, volunteering in all Chennai triathlon, JHU, CTM, Blood donation camps, trekking, bike trips, plantations, Chennai Coastal Cleanup. 2016- was all about CTC to me !!

**What will you say has been your biggest achievement when it comes along with  CTC?

CTC played a major role in changing myself and possibly, letting me experience the world in a different way and this "change in me" is one of my biggest achievement post-CTC.

**Anything else you might want to add?

CTC gave me an opportunity to meet wonderful people put together from various parts of the world in all likelihood(they eventually be your good friend) and to meet them during events is a bliss. Not everybody gets such opportunity to meet people who "smile" though u know them or not.
Peter,Nive,Tam,Dil,Aha,Av,Mu,Ash,Sai,Mo,Nir,Sri,Je,Har,Nar,KK,Mal,Shy,Hem,An,Ko,Tommy& to all selfless souls - TQ for showing volunteering world !

**Share any one of the CTC Best moments you had in CTC?

All of them !! few mentions:
- I was asked to ferry a blind depth pool called "Deadend pool" during a trek with Emperors and to ferry this you have to jump in the Dead-end pool. I was high-strung frightened to core yet managed to jump with help of Arun, Praveen(and this was my first jump into deepest pool/water point ever in my life) I remember this saying "If you want to let go of the fear, face it"
- CCC awareness programs especially all kids program, Neelangarai, Decathlon opening @Navalur and BIG FM with Peteru, Abi ka, Ravi.

**How do you manage your work life balance?

It's based on how u control your hours for work-home-work, you can ask yourself: "in what other ways I am bringing joy to my life?"
I unlocked the joy to my life by doing things I liked and prioritize my routine - work better without work enslaving you!
If you really want to do something, you 'll find a way. If you don't, you 'll find an excuse.

**Any specific goals/dream that you are working on?

Yes, to do further specialization in EM,
to go explore many more places and
to continue to do what I am doing and to reach out to people in need, awareness to assure people that every accountable move you do towards an unhealthy environment is directly proportional to ailment-medicine bound future!

**How has your life changed after joining this CTC?

I 've never been so much outdoors or been with a big gang of friends camping/touring as my parent were always strict as every other parent, but this time my mom appreciated what I did as a part of my heart & being a responsible citizen, then on she always been lenient and never stopped me from what I wanted to do and this helped me to explore many places though am a girl, she let me be a free-spirit.

**We have seen you in leading many of volunteering and how does this help you outside CTC?

Yes, a lot especially you learn you don't have to be forceful/commanding unnecessarily to get any jobs done. You also teach or learn from others and most of all you treat everyone equally and every life equally!

**What are your other interest?

I love to read autobiographies, write, organizing events, sketching and songs were always my best potion of happiness.

Post Event Write up - Madras Clickers - Walk no:19 - Snake walk with Irulas

When I was going through the long list of threads in CTC google groups, I came across the event which was unique and exciting -  “ Snake walk with Irulas ”.  I couldn’t curb my excitement as I was always captivated by the topic SNAKES from my childhood.  I instantly pinged Allwyn (One of the organiser of the event) and enquired about the event and this was two weeks prior to the event and I was that excited not to miss a spot. Then did the registration and the instructions mail followed it .

On 19th February 2017, the members participating in the event gathered in front of Thiruvanmiyur MTRS station by 5 am. My pick up point was at O
MR
 toll
gate. By 5.20 am I joined the group. We halted at Navalur for a small refreshing tea break. Then started our journey towards Mahabalipuram.

On the way we had to pick up our Kingpin – Kaali anna and his team(
t
he guide for our snake walk). Reached our destination little late than scheduled. Everyone were apprehensive because we were informed that the best time to catch a snake would be little early than we arrived. So we were very doubtful if we would be lucky to see a snake on that day. We started walking with the Irulas
.
The Irulas walked into the fields to find any snake while we were advised  to walk parallel on a steep wide platform from the fields. We were so lucky to find the first snake within 5 minutes of our walk. Kaali anna catched a small snake which was non venomous. We were so excited as many of us had a chance to catch a glimpse of a snake so close for the first time in our life.

Everyone instantly took their DSLR/ smartphone cameras to click the pictures  of it. Kaali anna briefly explained about the snake’s eating habits and its nature. While he was clarifying our doubts, in the blink of an eye the snake bit in his hands. We panicked, but he stroked the bitten area casually considering that it’s a non-venomous snake. We spent 10  minutes with the snake and rushed further to see if we were lucky enough to find more.

After a long walk for around 30 minutes we halted at a shady place while the Irulas were busy finding a snake for us in the dense bushes on the green fields of paddy. During the time the group had so many interactions and shared most of their trekking/ walk experiences with the newbies . We were fortunate to have so many healthy conversations and discussions about so many topics . As the time passed by we were hopeless to find another snake
,

but then we saw Kaali anna hooting at us with a lengthy rope like thick braided wire. When he came closer we identified it was an Indian cobra by its hood mark.  Trembling in fear we distanced ourselves as it was considered highly venomous.

Without any forethought everyone started clicking pictures. And we attempted to click selfies from a very distant point. Kaali anna explained us the whole theory about the Indian cobra and was patient enough to do that simultaneously while he handled the snake graciously . After a while he let the snake on the ground for us to click the perfect pose of an
Spectacled

Cobra. The cobra stood majestically while we surrounded it to click his beauty of elegance ( BTW it was a male cobra) . While we were pondering over why the snake hissed so loudly , we informed that the snake was very furious and is ready to attack anyone who confronted it so closely.  While the snake posed us royally on the ground, the group cleared all the myths and notions we had about snakes from our childhood with the Irulas. After 20 minutes of live encounter and interaction with the snake, it was carefully put inside a bag to be later taken to the crocodile bank for venom extraction.

Then after 10 minutes of discussion we thought of winding up the walk as we presumed that no more snakes can be found.
So we stood around in a circle and commenced our introduction session. As my turn came, after 5 people there came a loud voice calling the group. We ceased the intro session and stormed into the direction of the voice.  To everyone’s surprise, we found a Russel Viper in the hands of Kaali anna . He cautioned us to distance a lot as the Russel viper has a tendency to plunge on the prey. He made the snake move on the ground to show us a series of S-loops which it exhibited when threatened . He was warning us continuously to stay a little far from him as the snake was highly poisonous and has the tendency to attack swiftly. After brief explanation he showed us the teeth of the snake by widely opening its mouth, but refused to touch the teeth with a stick as the venom might cause a serious threat if comes in contact with the skin. The members clicked the rare sight of the Russel viper’s wide open mouth in excitement and inquisitively posed so many questions to Kaali anna.

After which the snake was carefully sacked inside the bag and was taken away . The members were more than gratified after 3 hours of walk. Everyone considered themselves lucky to see such a instance of Russel Viper and Indian cobra in the same walk. As we walked towards the starting point Kaali anna showed his right hand index  finger which had a slight bend due to a venomous snake bite. After the mandatory group picture we walked towards the start point .
Tedious walk was followed by a brief relaxation and we headed to A2B for our morning breakfast . Then bid adieu to the members and we started our journey towards Chennai.

In short this walk was an enthralling and informative for all of us. It would be a great fault of mine if I don’t mention the group members support and their involvement in exchanging knowledge about various topics and subjects spoken during the walk. And my first praise are always for the organisers for giving us an opportunity to explore a different part of nature.  It was totally worth sacrificing morning sleep on a Sunday to experience such a gratifying and fun filled walk with the members who were full of pep and chirpy.
